there are alot of turorials on how to make a custom backround on your usb drive (and everyone who plugs it in will see this backround). I have read that this wont work on vista so i wonder if it works on Windows 7?

how can i disable this annoying prompt where it asks about scanning the flash driver for errors? I get it everytime i plug some usb device in and when i scan i get "no errors" anyway.
Is there a way to stop the "Do you want to scan and fix Removable Disk (X?" prompt every time I insert a flash drive? Doesn't matter if it's an SD card in the reader, a thumb drive, or my android phone acting as a storage device.
Each time I have to click "continue without scanning". Maybe I've just been lucky and have dodged a bullet by not scanning and fixing (recommended) - or maybe, MS is on a hair trigger?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn the past, I have had to use the built-in Administrator account to install Microsoft's virtualization software and install Windows XP Mode (I don't know why it wouldn't install before, I even disabled UAC with failed results). In order to do this, I enabled the Administrator account via Command Prompt, as recommended by a tech support specialist I used the command "net user administrator /active yes" and the Admin account was active, I installed the program, disabled the Administrator account, and went on my merry way.
It is now about a year later and after I have created a system image of my computer (I only made one because I do not have enough sufficient storage to make multiple ones, or even replace my current one) I have found out that there is an issue with command prompt or something... I unfortunately do not know. I had to reactivate the Administrator account for one reason or another and did my business, but after I reactivated it I came to find that the same command to activate the Administrator account... Changed its password. I used a Linux Live CD with Ophcrack to find out that the password for my Admin account was changed to "yes". And after I tried to disable the account, INSTEAD of it being disabled, the password was set to "no" hence "net user administrator /active no". I decided to experiment on the matter with other accounts, and typing in other words besides "yes" or "no" and I found that the net user command will change the password of any account. This is disturbing to me and also, I would like to easily enable or disable any account without changing any passwords.

How can I stop Windows from asking whether I want to scan and fix an external drive,whenever I turn on that external drive. View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer (Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7 Home Premium) acquired some sort of terrible virus and shut itself down. When I try to turn it on, it goes into startup repair, and startup repair always fails. I have tried every single system restore point, and that fails too. When I try to start it in any of the safe modes, it simply goes back to startup repair and fails again.
He was able to access C: in command prompt. All my files are in their original locations and haven't been corrupted, but there are also four folders with names like xisdfl83lkd02 (seriously) which definitely weren't there before and presumably contain whatever has crippled my precious laptop. Whenever he tried to delete those folders, the command prompt looked like it had accepted the delete command, but then when he went back into C they were still there. So the bad files are immortal or something.
He said he was able to move things around, so I should get an external hard drive to back up my files, wipe the computer back to factory settings, then put my files back on it from the external hard drive. Well, now I have an external hard drive but don't have him around to do this.
I have absolutely no experience with command prompt, and I've read a bunch of tutorials on how to use it, but they aren't dumbed down enough for me to understand them. I need someone to walk me through it.
I can access the command prompt, but it goes into X:\sources\recovery\Tools> as a starting line. The thing at the top says Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. I didn't even know X was a real drive. I try to get it to C and it just goes back to X. When I type cd E:\ or cd F:\ trying to figure out where my external hard drive is, E says "The device is not ready" and F takes me right back to X:\sources\recovery\Tools>.
How do I get to the directory where I can find my files and move them to the hard drive?
I have a customer's laptop that will not start. Upon start up, it looks like bootmgr is corrupted or missing. I have managed to boot using a Windows 7 disc and get into the CMD promt. However, when I try to run "diskpart" it just gets stuck and will not give me a prompt to start erasing/formatting the drive(s). I have tried re-installing Win7, as well as tried repairing so that I could roll back the drive, and none of those work. This is an HP G72 laptop (Win7 - Core I-3).

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I am wiping my hard drive by booting with the Windows disk and going to command prompt. I successfully formatted drive C:, about 100 MB of system files and D:, about 500 GB or the bulk of my hard rive. These were the same hard drive, but separate partitions apparently. In Windows it just appears as C: altogether hiding the system files so you don't do something stupid. After I had cleared those two drives, I thought everything was gone until I remembered that it started me out in X:sources. I went back to it and was like what the heck is this? I went to the root directory, X: and typed dir for directory. There was an executable setup file, and four directories including the "sources" one, Program files, Windows, and Users. The whole drive was about 30,000,000 bytes which is I guess 30 MB. It's volume label was called "Boot". I tried to format it, and it said "Cannot format. This volume is write protected." What is this X: drive and is there a command to remove the write protection? Also, what would happen if I did eliminate this data? Could I still install Windows back from the DVD or would that not be possible without those them?

This occurrence is totally random and it doesn't happen sometimes. I can see the drives in Explorer (e.g. C on VAULT_CORE_I&) and I see sclientc in the prompt, but I have no idea how to access the drive from the prompt.
I'm trying to help out a colleague who runs an old FORTRAN compiler and does alot of his engineering calcs with it, and would not work in Windows 7 (but it is working in XP Mode). However, I'd like to keep the files on his Windows 7 machine and not contain them inside the virtual machine.
Before I even go further: yes, the "hide empty drives" has been unchecked)I had to reinstall my machine and I was able to to see the drive letters for the internal flash card reader. However I think something might have gone wrong when I give my external HDD a drive letter that was held by one of the flash card reader).I wrote "I think" because I am not really sure since I never wanted to use the internal card reader till today so I never noticed there was an issue. Anyway, the internal card reader does not show up even when I insert a card in the reader. Basically nothing happens. I have uninstalled the "USB Mass storage device" and it gets installed without any issue but the problem is still there: I can't see the reader. the INTERNAL flash card reader has a USB slot and when I insert a EXTERNAL flash drive, the EXTERNAL flash drive shows up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.
I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.
When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.
I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.
I have a hard drive I want to backup to a 64gb flash drive and then restore it to another different hard drive than where it came from. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

I cannot copy large files/ holders into usb flash drive or write large files to cd/ dvd. The copying/ moving process would stay on for about 5-10 seconds then freezes then I get an error message. That is:
H: refers to a location that is unavailable. it could be on a hard drive on this computer...
I have all the latest drivers.
And windows/ nero 9 can't use my dvd drive to burn files.
Some info about my system: AMD X4 630 CPU. MSI KA780G (AMD 780G chipset) mobo. I have 2 sata hdds, non raid mode. The DVD drive is IDE. 4gb ram ddr2 ram. windows 7 64 bit.
I have two internal 750GB HDs - one is partitioned to C (Windows) and the other D (data). The other is E and simply a mirror backup of D which I do once a day.
The problem is that the E drive goes to sleep after XX minutes but some applications or processes (e.g. Empty Recycle Bin) want to wake it up before they work, which means a delay of ~10 seconds as the E drive spins up - very annoying.
How can I temporarily disable the drive until I need it for the once a day backup?

Anyone know how to turn volume tracking on and off? I'm running Windows 7 32 bit build 7077.
I have 2 hard drives in the same computer, each with its own instance of Windows 7. I must keep these files separate from each other for security reasons - the problem is that each instance of Windows automatically reads the data from the other hard drive.
I am aware that usually the way to fix this is to select the hard drive and click 'Disable' (works fine on one hard drive) - but the other hard drive does not have this option. Is there any other way I can get Windows 7 to completely ignore/disable/uninstall a hard drive? Note that simply clicking 'Uninstall' does not work, since it automatically reinstall itself on reboot.
To sum up:
- 'Disable button' does not exist.
- 'Uninstall' button is useless, since it reinstall on reboot.
