I have a Lenovo T500 laptop running Win 7 Pro x64. The hard drive started to fail (chkdsk showed bad sectors, S.M.A.R.T. test failed, etc.) so I got a replacement drive on warranty from Lenovo, put it in, reinstalled Win 7 and about 150 updates, restored my backed-up data, and reinstalled several applications. At some point in that tedious process, chkdsk started running on almost every reboot. I have run chkdsk /r both normally and from the Restore Environment.

I've just purchased a new desktop Extra Value Desktop PC - Desktops | Ebuyer.com along with an OEM Windows 7 64bit. This is a fresh install on a brand new PC. Every time I get the same error message "windows could not format the partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057". I've just removing RAM and still same problem. Even tried install XP and after 3 hours fomating the drive it it came up with this error ""Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged."

A couple of weeks ago a storm blew through and knocked out my power for a moment, then it came back on. Within a few seconds, another wind gust and it ripped our power lines down.Got power back a few days later, and have been busy trying to fix this on my own but to no avail.
My computer booted into system recovery tools, start up problem fixes etc. none of them worked, leading to the decision to format my SSD and try to reinstall windows 7. I get to "windows is copying files" and it stays stuck at 0% for about a minute or two, then I get "Windows could not format a partition on disk 1. The error occured while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x8007057.
I concluded that I should try deleting the partition and creating a new one. That however, got me this message:Failed to delete the selected partition. [Error: 0x8007017].So I decided to try and format the drive, to this result:
Failed to format the selected partition. [Error: 0x8007057].
Same result as when I was trying to install. Puzzles me! I've still got a lot to learn.I've tried removing unnecessary RAM, same results.Having the same problem with a Vista 64 bit install disk, and have tried to install on my SSD and HDD with no differences.
System:
ASUS Sabertooth X58 MoBo
Core i7 920
6gb DDR3 1600mhz corsair RAM
RiDATA 32GB SSD (OS drive)
1TB Western Digital HDD
and one other 500GB HDD (I forget the brand)

I recently built a new rig and I had a problem with one stick of memory. The other stick worked alright, but I've been getting random failures. Can bad memory be inconsistent? Right now, I can't start my OS up at all. It goes straight to the Windows Repair Launcher, which fails. When it gets there, I can either find a restore point or let it 'attempt to fix' for as long as I can endure. The restore point option results in 'instruction xxx failed. memory reference xxx failed.'This leads me to believe there is a problem with the memory. But, could it be the motherboard? I played a video game for hours last night, as well as surfed the web and ran other applications. Everything was fine, until I shut down. This isn't the first time this happened. Last time, I 'fixed' it by switching the 'good' memory stick with the bad. The bad resulted in getting the OS up, but lots of BSOD's

Since early August all my Security updates have been failing. It adds time to each boot up period as it goes through the updates and then at the end will say it's failed and is reverting all the changes. I have already done some research on this issue and ran "sfc/scannow" as well as "chkdsk/f/r." Both seemed to go through with no problems. After that I did a Windows update and 12 updates seemed to go through with no problem until the required reboot where we're back to the same issue of failing and reverting.

Every 5 minutes or so , a pop up saying "You need to format the disk in drive g before you can use it" comes up. Problem is, I have no disk in drive g, and nothing connected to my usb ports. So i have no idea what this means. Add to this that the device manager keeps refreshing and will not let me click anything.

I am getting this popup: "You need to format the disk in drive x before you can use it". In my case it's drive H:. I have unchecked "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" in the Control Panel. I did this a week ago when I started getting these popups and it seemed to work till today when it all started up again. I just noticed that the popup is not appearing, but the drive is appearing and disappearing from my file manager (I use Q-dir).

This weekend a installed the windows 7 64bit over a vista 32bit. During the installation I left my Samsung S2 HD 500gb plugged in.After the installation the windows didn't find a mass storage controller drive and my HD appeared as Local Drive ( F: ). When I try to access it, this msg comes up: you need to format the disk in drive f before you can use it. I tried plugging in all usb port I could find. And even the win xp 32bit showed the same msg. I also tried the "Easy Recovery Pro". But it didn't worked. When a click on any of the recovery option the software doesnot find any hard drive in my pc. Then I tried the "GetDataBack for NTFS". After 24 hours of scanning, it didn't find any of my files. Tonight, I will try the "diskdigger" and the "Recuva". But I am not putting too much faith on those software due some post I read here. I really need to recover same work data.

I have a generic System 7 64 bit system with a 1 TB SATA drive. It has one hard drive which I have partitioned into 4 partitions, with C: being where I put all the system software. The board has mulitple SATA ports.Change considered: cloning the C: partition onto a new SSD so that I can get the performance boost of an SSD. There are some heat problems with existing hard drive so I probably need to change it out, so I would also like to clone the D:, E:, and F: partitions to a new hard drive.I have cloned a single physical drive to another physical drive, and the software (Ghost, or the like) usually handles it ok, so that all I need to do is adjust some partition sizes, and then disconnect the old hard drive and everyting is good. This includes cloning a single hard drive with multiple partitions to being cloned to a new single hard drive with identical numbers of partitions.Compared to my prior experience, is there something different about cloning one partition only vs cloning the whole drive. My proposed plan is:
1) Install SSD
2) clone C: to SSD only
3) clone D: E: F: of old drive to new drive.
4) remove old drive.

Awhile ago I got myself two SSD drives and installed Windows 7 on one of them. I didn't move over my OS from my old 1TB drive or anything I just did a clean install. Today I finally finished making sure I'd transfered over all my files from the disk and I was about to format it when I got the message that can be seen in the above picture. It seems the old Windows (D: drive) is still set as the System drive and my new Windows OS (SSD C: drive) is just set as Boot but not System.
This makes me unable to format it and I have no clue on how to fix this. Does anyone know how I can give my new SSD drive the System status so I can format the old drive?

I'm building my first pc and I'm getting blocked right at the gate. I have a 64bit Windows 7 installation disk (home version, "for system builders" ). This is a fresh installation, I don't have any other OSs for this build so my options are limited.
It starts out fine, but when I get to the point where I am to pick a hard drive to install to, it won't accept anything. It will allow me to delete partitions but clicking on "New" or "Format" (under the advanced options) makes it think for a few seconds, then just stop like nothing happened.
I have tried formatting it through gparted, but no matter what I do it complains that the drive has been formatted with in GPT, even when the drive is completely clean and unformatted.
I'm using a Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1tb hard drive
on the MSI P67A-GD65 mobo
with intel i7 2600k.

Got a 1.5 tb Sata seagate and I've heard win7 has probs with drives this size when they're the boot drive. But in the "where do you want to install windows" screen in advanced options there seems to be no way to make a partition just for windoze7; only options that ain't ghosted are delete and format. Sensibly a three- or four-hundred gig partition on this large HD should work for a boot drive but I'm jiggered if I can figure out how to do it; even though it obviously doesn't need all the space, the only option it gives me is to install to this one big Disk 0 Partition 2.(Partition 1 is the 100mb "system reserved" ).

My wife shout down her computer this morning took it on remote location for work today but never booted it up. When she got back home tonight it wouldn't boot up. I don't know what to call these screen but some Startup Repair screen. Just says Repair action: Boot sector repair, Result: Failed.I downloaded and burned to CD the boot CD for the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition but I don't know what disk I am even looking for. I see 3 partitions listed for one disk. The only one with a label is BDEDrive and it's 300 MB. The other two have *: as what I would call a label. One is 297.79 GB and the other is 12.34 MB. The BDEDrive is the only with with status of Active. NTFS on that partition and Other on the big partition.
