I have a generic System 7 64 bit system with a 1 TB SATA drive. It has one hard drive which I have partitioned into 4 partitions, with C: being where I put all the system software. The board has mulitple SATA ports.Change considered: cloning the C: partition onto a new SSD so that I can get the performance boost of an SSD. There are some heat problems with existing hard drive so I probably need to change it out, so I would also like to clone the D:, E:, and F: partitions to a new hard drive.I have cloned a single physical drive to another physical drive, and the software (Ghost, or the like) usually handles it ok, so that all I need to do is adjust some partition sizes, and then disconnect the old hard drive and everyting is good. This includes cloning a single hard drive with multiple partitions to being cloned to a new single hard drive with identical numbers of partitions.Compared to my prior experience, is there something different about cloning one partition only vs cloning the whole drive. My proposed plan is:
1) Install SSD
2) clone C: to SSD only
3) clone D: E: F: of old drive to new drive.
4) remove old drive.

I bought new hp laptop.. it came with 500 GB harddisk, windows 7 home basic, I didn't get any windows cd apart from recovery in hard disk. My windows is installed in c: and that is the only drive that it have... now the situation..
1) I want to partition my harddisk without losing windows means I don't want to format C: drive
2) I also want to install linux in dual mode with windows..
Second question is related to first one because I don't need any method that may lead to situation like I can't install any other operating system.

How I could partition my internal hdd without wiping all data from it, and then sharing the partitioned drive within my home network. Also, I was wondering how I could tell what drive letters are already assigned to my laptop's usb ports.

In my Sister's laptop, running Windows 7 Ultimate x86, all of a sudden, while she was working on the computer, the "E drive" went missing which was a partition on the hard disk (I don't remember if it was a logical or primary partition). She tried restarting the system but to no avail. So, I told her to open the "Disk management" tool in Windows 7 to see if the partition is visible in there. I did this because sometimes, in my computer, my expansion drive wouldn't show but it would be visible in the disk management tool and all I had to do was to re-assign it a drive letter. But, in this case, it wasn't visible over there.
So, now I told her to download "Mini-Tool Partition manager Home edition" and install it on her laptop. On running it, it wouldn't show the partition either. It would just show "C:", "D", "System Reserved" and unallocated space. However, when I added up the size displayed by C:, D:, System Reserved and Unallocated, it doesn't add up to the actual hard disk size. It means the partition is somewhere there but not visible. Is it possible that the partition would show up correctly if the laptop is booted into the bootable image of Mini-Tool Partition Manager?

How to force format a flash drive? I have an 8gb flash drive and I plugged it in to a speaker that plays mp3 songs. But after unplugged it, my flash drive prompts "Please insert disk" and 0mb in my computer. I tried to view it with disk management and I saw its partition type was RAW.

I wanted to create a new partition to try out linux. So I decided to shrink E: by 20 GB. I then formatted the free space into a new drive by right clicking and creating new simple volume. I was warned that the drive would be made "simple", but not knowing the implications, I went ahead with the procedure. Now on rebooting, windows won't load. I had made a repair disc, so was able to use it to check for any start up errors. It reported none. Moreover I used "diskpart" through cmd to find volume c: is dynamic.

I have a 1TB hard disk and I want to install win 7 on it only. I do not want to store any other data on it or use it for other purpose.
Is it better to partition into 2 parts and install win 7 in a small partition and leave the other partition empty, or is it better to install win 7 without partition the disk?

I've got Win-7 installed on my laptop. Since the space on C drive is very less, is decided tht i'll extend it. I had another partition (D) that had loads of free space. But when I opened the Disk Management tool to delete this partition, the option thr was not active.thr's some file in D drive that cant be deleted. I was trying to format the D drive, but that's not possible either. It keeps on poppiin some kinda error ""Windows can format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or othe rprogrammes using this drive and try again". I also tried to locate the programs runnin any files from here. But there are few processes that i cant kill.

I know there are tons of threads on this but as of yet none of them have helped.Trying to do a clean install on a Sony VAIO laptop PCG-71312l (or something close to that)Where do you want to install windows?I have Disk 0 Partition 1 with a total size of 298.1 and free space of 298.0 GB Type is primaryError message below says "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1. (show details)"The details are:"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS"Well that's the fun part of the SONY VAIO - you can't do squat in the BIOS except change the date/time and boot order but I read that the VAIO will detect and setup everything automatically. So I Can't do any ACHI/IDE changes.
So if I just click on next I just get an error message of"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."I have deleted, formatted, created new partitions and restarted the computer 10 times. Nothing is getting me anywhereOh and I had to create a bootable USB from the windows ISO to USB/DVD program.I have gotten this to work just fine before with the same hard drive which was working just fine an hour ago.

I'm in a bit of a pickle here. My CD drive won't allow me to boot from CDs anymore, for whatever reason. I have 2 partitions on my hard drive and I'm wondering if it's possible to format the main partition by copying the windows setup files to my secondary and then somehow running them from there, whilst wiping the main one. I really don't want to reinstall without formatting, but right now I have no other option.

l am having a problem with installing due to a disk partition problem.. Im getting an error that says "The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems Windows can only be installed to GPT disks".I have no clue and reading other forums it sounded like specific computers were having this problem but I built mine.Had a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 I used from a friend with no Key, Microsoft doesn't like that so I purchased a Key from them for Premium, used a W7 x32 disk by accident and I have 12 GBs of Ram so pretty inefficient.. I downloaded a W7 x64 version and am now having this problem...; First I've down this now bc Microsoft said they would send me a disk in the mail when I bought the Key but that was about 3 weeks ago and I would like to use my computer to its capabilities.

On my computers' Disk 0 I have two main partitions. The computer is "Dual Boot".
Partition A - Windows 2003 server OS (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Partition B - Windows 7 OS (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
I want to lose Partition A (Windows 2003 OS) and use if for something else or just simply reclaim the drive space. However I can't because ( as I understand it) it's the "Active Partition"I did a some research and I've read I can change the Active Partition using "Disk Management". When I right click on the Windows 7 partition I see the option "Mark Partition as Active".

Got a 1.5 tb Sata seagate and I've heard win7 has probs with drives this size when they're the boot drive. But in the "where do you want to install windows" screen in advanced options there seems to be no way to make a partition just for windoze7; only options that ain't ghosted are delete and format. Sensibly a three- or four-hundred gig partition on this large HD should work for a boot drive but I'm jiggered if I can figure out how to do it; even though it obviously doesn't need all the space, the only option it gives me is to install to this one big Disk 0 Partition 2.(Partition 1 is the 100mb "system reserved" ).
