On my computers' Disk 0 I have two main partitions. The computer is "Dual Boot".
Partition A - Windows 2003 server OS (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Partition B - Windows 7 OS (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
I want to lose Partition A (Windows 2003 OS) and use if for something else or just simply reclaim the drive space. However I can't because ( as I understand it) it's the "Active Partition"I did a some research and I've read I can change the Active Partition using "Disk Management". When I right click on the Windows 7 partition I see the option "Mark Partition as Active".
Just a quick one, i have a 2gb usb flash pen, bascially what i am tryng to do is create a small active partition on it so i can copy my Active Boot files over and boot from the drive. Really want to give this application a try heard good things about it. I just cant seem to find a way to set an active partition or if its even possible?
I have a single Hard disk drive in my laptop which is divided into two partitions and in one partition is Windows vista Starter installed when I bought it..So I decided to use Multi boot and I installed Windows 7 Ultimate in the other partition...Now my question is can I safely Mark my partition as Active where Windows 7 is installed?
I have installed Windows 7 on my D: drive. I have placed a NEW installation on my C: drive besides it.See the attached image.I ONLY use the W7 on the C: drive now, so I want to delete my D: partition completely (416GB).HOWEVER, I see that it is labeled: "System, Active, Primary Partition".Can I just format this drive and will my PC still boot or do I have to take particular steps?
I have always only used it to store data, so why is Windows 7 telling me it is a system partition? Did Windows put data on the drive and start using it without even asking me?At first I tried just unplugging the drive, but then Windows would not boot, so clearly it needs it for some reason.
I just bought a cheap laptop from Walmart yesterday with windows 7. I am not a fan of it so I wanted to see if I could dual boot windows xp. Luckly it is a IDE machine not sata. So I Downloaded a copy of windows xp (I have a license key for all the people who would shun me for it, it is paid for). Well when I was making a new partition to install windows xp on I set the new partition to active, rebooted and wala, my computer won't boot because I'm a bone head sometimes. I have access to another windows 7 comp that is Extremly slow and I put emphasis on Extremly
I have had my system up and running with Windows 7 for at least four or five months. I have four drives in an mATX case. Yesterday, while it was idle, I saw it flash a BSOD and then rebooted. when it restated it displayed the following Error: "No active partition found. Reboot your computer." Which I did several times to no avail. Next, I used the install disk to try to "repair" the partition...seven or ten times, no luck. Also, no drives were listed in the window at repair prompt. So, I pulled all the cables on all the drives but the one containing the system and voilas! here I am writing to you without issue and without three of my drives. I have two other sata drives in addition to my system sata drive. one IDE drive on the system.
I'm brand new to windows 7. I just installed last night to a Crucial c300 SSD (drive c:). I want to have everything else go to my 2TB Seagate Barrracuda HDD (Drive b:).I'm sure it's just a setting in disk management somewhere, but how can I set it so that the default installation drive will be drive b:
In switching over from XP to 7 I found myself also buying almost all new components, except hard drives. Due to a number of events that no one would believe humanly possible, I managed to establish my "C:" and "D:" drives on hard drive 1, whereas hard drive 0 is a bunch of free space. The computer boots up to Windows 7 on "C:" on HD 1.
I want to switch cables on the SATA drives and then designate the new HD0 (which was HD1) as the primary active partition, but as we all know, I can't just switch cables as then the computer does not know to boot off HD0.
I have the problem in my space in part of drive. I will switch drive active and change my active system beetwen two drive C and E. How a change the system now.
I am running Windows Ultimate 32 bit. I have 2 SATA Hard Drives (one with OS), 2 SATA DVD and Blu-Ray Drives and 1 IDE Hard Drive which is configured as a slave.Second - I needed to do some hard drive trouble shooting for another computer that had a (possibly) dead IDE Hard Drive. To do this I shut down my computer, and attached the (supposedly) dead IDE Hard Drive in its place. Now - all the trouble began. After booting into the Bios, I noticed the supposedly dead hard drive did not register even though it was spinning. I kept booting into the OS to see if it would be recognized in any case - it was not.I put my working IDE Hard Drive back in - after shutting down and removing the dead IDE Hard Drive.I booted back into the BIOS and noticed my good IDE Hard Drive wasn't being recognized either. I then went into advanced Bios settings and walla - it saw my hard drive but said I needed to reboot. After rebooting I noticed the same thing with the Bios, but this time proceeded to boot into the OS.After signing on, I noticed my Good Hard Drive was no longer recognized in Explorer. I went into Administrator and Computer Management and then into Disk Management.
I recently updated my NVIDIA card with audio drivers and now it can make the audio go through my television using HDMI (watching videos). The problem however, is that when I go into the Sound settings and change the default to the NVIDIA "device", I need to reboot windows to activate the change. I have tried going into the mixer and the sound setting and I can't figure out a way to change the active audio device without having to reboot (or even just log out and log back in).
I wanted to create a new partition to try out linux. So I decided to shrink E: by 20 GB. I then formatted the free space into a new drive by right clicking and creating new simple volume. I was warned that the drive would be made "simple", but not knowing the implications, I went ahead with the procedure. Now on rebooting, windows won't load. I had made a repair disc, so was able to use it to check for any start up errors. It reported none. Moreover I used "diskpart" through cmd to find volume c: is dynamic.
I currently have a dual boot on my computer with Windows 7 and XP. Unfortunately as my computer is quite old my hard drive is not very big and with it being partitioned I am fast running out of disk space. So I tried to shrink the XP partition to allow me more disk space for Windows 7. Unfortunatley this would only let me shrink it by 83mb for some reason. I decided that since I barely use XP anymore that I would simply reformat the XP drive then try and merge them together. When I tried to format the partition it just gave the error "Windows was unable to complete the format". I then discovered in Disk Management that the Windows XP partition was the system partition which was causing the problem.
I have a HP dv3-2314tx laptop, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit OS which has two disk drives(C,D). D for recovery. C drive contains OS and all my files. In Disk Management I marked C drive as "Mark Partition as Active". It was sowing some warning. But I pressed OK button. Now my laptop is not boots. What should I do? Should I reinstall my OS or any solution available?
I want to be able to safely remove the D: partition in the image linked above. I can tell that I will need to change the Z: partition into the System partition to do so, but I cannot find out how.
i have acer laptop with windows 7 home basic 64 bit os installed, onle one drive with 500 gb was created while installation, now i wants to split that disk into more parts how can i do
back to make my main partition (C: ) where I installed windows only 50gb big. What I wonder is, is it possible to decrease the second partition in size and move that extra size to the main partition without damaging data on both partitions?
Drive 1: vista boot loader, vista32, two partitions (vista on C, some stuff on D), both NTFS
drive 2: broken grub loader (never mind actually), one ntfs partition with some porn, games, and other usual stuff . named E.
so then, i copy the 7100 x64 distr into my flash drive, boot it, and install our beloved 7even into the drive 2. it does not ask me anything, write its boot loader to drive 1, lets me choose which OS to boot into each time... perfect. BUT(T):
7even named her own partition C, while drive 1 partitions became D and E. i swapped last two easily, using 7even's disk management utility. that's 1 of 3 and that's not enough. i really want 7even's partition to have the same letter as in vista. i even googled it, and didn't find any answers.
7even is still unconfigured, so it would not be a problem to reinstall it. even more, if it's really necesarry, i can move all of drive 1's data somewhere else, so i can format it.
I think I made a mistake, as when I partitioned my drive after I bought my laptop, I set my Windows partition(C to a much smaller size than usual (30gb). Now I see in the Computer section in win 7 64bit that the drive has like 3 gb of free space. Is that enough for running ? I would like to increase the size of this partition, but with the ordinary way, I can just lower the size, not increase it.
Also, I would like to change the menu and running language to English. Laptop is in German right now, I speak the language, but I`ve gotten used to having my software in English...
When i did partition by disk management. it allowed me only to partition 226 gb space.so now in my e drive there is 226 gb n in c drive 227gb space.actually i want to keep in c drive 100 gb and make another drive of 100gb but whenever i try to shrink it doesn't allow to extend.
I am confused about how much I should keep the partition in my new laptop, the reason is, I feel that disk partition do affects the system speed, I do not know whether I am correct or not. I have a 700 GB hard disk presently with Win-7 Installed, I do not know how to do the partition when windows is installed, during installation I was unable to do the partition because 'new' button was disable.I hope there is some way to do the partition after installing win-7. Please help tell the way to do the partition, also tell how many partition is optimum with what size.
i have 5 partitions in my 500 gb hard disk. i just deleted two of the partitions which are seen nearby in disk manager in windows 7..After that i got a 242 gb free space with green color..after that i try to make a simple volume..but it end up with an error as follows..there is not enough space available on the disks to complete this operation
i have Ubuntu dual booted with windows 7 32 bit, i am running out of space on my hard drive and am not using the 100 gigabytes i partitioned of for Ubuntu, i was hoping that someone might know how to change the partition size as i cant find out how to do it.
i got only one disk and all of the partitions are dynamic i have low space on the system files partition so i decided to extend the partition i deleted a partition and had an unallocated space but i couldnt extend the the system partition i tried to install windows but it couldnt install on a dynamic disk
I have a 1TB hard disk and I want to install win 7 on it only. I do not want to store any other data on it or use it for other purpose.
Is it better to partition into 2 parts and install win 7 in a small partition and leave the other partition empty, or is it better to install win 7 without partition the disk?
I've got Win-7 installed on my laptop. Since the space on C drive is very less, is decided tht i'll extend it. I had another partition (D) that had loads of free space. But when I opened the Disk Management tool to delete this partition, the option thr was not active.thr's some file in D drive that cant be deleted. I was trying to format the D drive, but that's not possible either. It keeps on poppiin some kinda error ""Windows can format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or othe rprogrammes using this drive and try again". I also tried to locate the programs runnin any files from here. But there are few processes that i cant kill.
I know there are tons of threads on this but as of yet none of them have helped.Trying to do a clean install on a Sony VAIO laptop PCG-71312l (or something close to that)Where do you want to install windows?I have Disk 0 Partition 1 with a total size of 298.1 and free space of 298.0 GB Type is primaryError message below says "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1. (show details)"The details are:"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS"Well that's the fun part of the SONY VAIO - you can't do squat in the BIOS except change the date/time and boot order but I read that the VAIO will detect and setup everything automatically. So I Can't do any ACHI/IDE changes.
So if I just click on next I just get an error message of"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."I have deleted, formatted, created new partitions and restarted the computer 10 times. Nothing is getting me anywhereOh and I had to create a bootable USB from the windows ISO to USB/DVD program.I have gotten this to work just fine before with the same hard drive which was working just fine an hour ago.
