Change Active Primary Drive
Nov 28, 2009
In switching over from XP to 7 I found myself also buying almost all new components, except hard drives. Due to a number of events that no one would believe humanly possible, I managed to establish my "C:" and "D:" drives on hard drive 1, whereas hard drive 0 is a bunch of free space. The computer boots up to Windows 7 on "C:" on HD 1.
I want to switch cables on the SATA drives and then designate the new HD0 (which was HD1) as the primary active partition, but as we all know, I can't just switch cables as then the computer does not know to boot off HD0.
What the heck do I do to accomplish this?

So I have a 64MB SSD that I use as my boot drive, then I have 1TB in SATA. I have Windows loaded on my SSD and everything works great. What I want to know, how do I move the primary drive to the SATA? Right now, SSD is "C" and SATA is "E".

I had 3 drives. my windows7 was installed on drive C. And I had 130GB unallocated space. I wanted to make new drive in this space with Minitool Partition Wizard.I read in mintool site that you can only have 3 primary drives. My E Drive was not important for me and I convert it to a logical drive and made a restart.Buuuut after restart my Windows 7 wont boot. Now I have fedora 15 and I see that all my drives and files are ok.

I just bought a cheap laptop from Walmart yesterday with windows 7. I am not a fan of it so I wanted to see if I could dual boot windows xp. Luckly it is a IDE machine not sata. So I Downloaded a copy of windows xp (I have a license key for all the people who would shun me for it, it is paid for). Well when I was making a new partition to install windows xp on I set the new partition to active, rebooted and wala, my computer won't boot because I'm a bone head sometimes. I have access to another windows 7 comp that is Extremly slow and I put emphasis on Extremly

back to make my main partition (C: ) where I installed windows only 50gb big. What I wonder is, is it possible to decrease the second partition in size and move that extra size to the main partition without damaging data on both partitions?

On my computers' Disk 0 I have two main partitions. The computer is "Dual Boot".
Partition A - Windows 2003 server OS (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Partition B - Windows 7 OS (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
I want to lose Partition A (Windows 2003 OS) and use if for something else or just simply reclaim the drive space. However I can't because ( as I understand it) it's the "Active Partition"I did a some research and I've read I can change the Active Partition using "Disk Management". When I right click on the Windows 7 partition I see the option "Mark Partition as Active".

I just built a new desktop, got a 60GB SSD to boot Windows7 (and maybe a couple applications) from, and a 1.5TB HDD for storage. I'm trying to change the default location of My Docs, Downloads, etc from the SSD to the HDD (maybe change the location of the whole User folder?) so that my SSD stays clean with just the necessities. My problem is that I can't access the right-click menu that allows you to change the default location.Note: When I first installed Windows 7, all of my SATA ports were in IDE mode. I was able to access the "change folder location" menu for My Docs, etc, at this time. I changed the SATA port with my SSD to AHCI mode, which really boosted the boot speed, but I couldn't access the menu anymore after that.

I recently updated my NVIDIA card with audio drivers and now it can make the audio go through my television using HDMI (watching videos). The problem however, is that when I go into the Sound settings and change the default to the NVIDIA "device", I need to reboot windows to activate the change. I have tried going into the mixer and the sound setting and I can't figure out a way to change the active audio device without having to reboot (or even just log out and log back in).

a friend is trying to download a big file from an ftp program to his pc, unfortunately it keeps downloading to his 30G partition that only has windows on it instead of the 1TB drive he's designated for download. The question is, how can he ensure that windows will download ftp files to his 1TB with plenty of room instead of downloading it to his Windows 7 partition drive? He says that Windows creates a ghost temp file of what he's downloading on the 30G and thats why he's having this issue..

I just got my laptop back from Acer and they had given me a new hard drive. I restored a disk image backup that I had made from Acronis True Image. The backup seemed a little strange going in, but none the less it worked anyway. I then went to Disk Management to look at the setup and noticed that my primary partition is now listed as a Logical. I'm posting a screen shot of the partions and someone tell me if that looks right to them and if not how do I get my C drive back to Primary. As I said it boots ok but when I did the recovery with Acronis it didn't seem to go as smoothly as it should have.

Here's the scenario: I have a 1TB disk with several partitions on it.
#1: Primary partition with Vista on it.
#2: A 500GB primary partition used as storage/backup.
#3: A 50GB partition encrypted with Truecrypt, Logical drive
Now, I want to create a new Primary partition at the end of the drive, so I can install another copy of Windows 7. Notice my 500GB storage partition does not need to be Primary, but it is, and I cannot create any more Primary partitions. How can I change the storage partition to a logical drive, and have my new partition be Primary?

I tried a couple times and it wouldn't work so I unplugged the secondary drive and it booted right up

I have two other hard drives in my computer. My operating system now is on "E" drive. I'm wanting to replace my "E" drive with a larger and faster drive.
I am currently backing up my entire "E" drive on my "C" drive.
Is it possible to simply pull out my current "E" drive and install a new "E" drive and then restore my backup to my new "E" drive? Or is it more complicated than that?

So earlier this year I constructed my first computer, which I sunk about 2k into and made fantastic . But, having no experience, I installed a 32 bit Windows 7 OS, thereby limiting my available RAM. Since I am a gamer, this is a bit of an issue. Now I have a new SSD, and I was wondering if I could simply load a 64 bit OS onto that drive and boot from there, thereby avoiding the reformatting of my current drive.
The primary drive is a 1TB regular hard drive, the secondary is a 64Gig Samsung 830 SSD.

I've had a Windows 7 PC that's motherboard recently broke so I have been trying to use the hard drive with another PC. The PC I'm trying to put it into has all Windows 7 compatible parts. I get to the starting windows screen and it restarts the computer and gives me the option to Launch Startup repair. I launched startup repair and it says that it cannot fix the problems automatically. I can hookup the hard drive as a secondary hard drive and access all of the files on it but I cannot make it primary it just wont boot. The computer that the hard drive originally came from did not include a recovery/install CD.

today I backed up my files when prompted by the little flag icon, they went on an external HDD. Updated everything. Went back to pc after tea, and when i switch on it can't boot windows.
1.. it asks me to put the cd in, when i do it goes through to the option to upgrade, repair or custom. If i try to custom install it tells me no drives were found.
2It won't let me upgrade either. So i put the disc for the motherboard etc in and ask it to repair it says IDE drive doesn't exist or ALL primary partitions are occupied

I recently reformatted my Windows 7 32bit system on my primary HDD (C). When I open My Computer, my secondary HDD (D) appears, but when I try to open it, it shows as empty. However, if I look at the properties of D, it says that only 200gb out of 500gb of free space is available. I booted into a live version of Ubuntu and the secondary HDD appears with all data in it and accessible, so I know there is nothing physically wrong with the drive. I know that I could brute force this problem by making a copy of the drive in Ubuntu, then reformatting it in Win7, but I'm hoping there's an easier solution that I'm just not aware of.
