Move Windows 7 From A Larger HDD To A Smaller SSD?

Jan 15, 2011

I have a 5900 RPM 1T Hard drive currently running my O.S and a few other programs, but it has gotten to the point where I would like to speed up the boot time and running certain applications. I wam looking at getting a SSD that at most will have 124GB of storrage space. I tried ghosting one hard drive to a smaller faster hard drive on my laptop so I know that it won't work but I have heard some people talking that their is a way to make the computer think that all the free space on the hard drive is gone and the hard drive is only as big as how much space is actually taken up.

I tried a couple times and it wouldn't work so I unplugged the secondary drive and it booted right up

Windows 7 Hard Drive Won't Boot - Cannot Make It Primary

Apr 18, 2012

I've had a Windows 7 PC that's motherboard recently broke so I have been trying to use the hard drive with another PC. The PC I'm trying to put it into has all Windows 7 compatible parts. I get to the starting windows screen and it restarts the computer and gives me the option to Launch Startup repair. I launched startup repair and it says that it cannot fix the problems automatically. I can hookup the hard drive as a secondary hard drive and access all of the files on it but I cannot make it primary it just wont boot. The computer that the hard drive originally came from did not include a recovery/install CD.

Unable To Shrink 1.5Tb Drive Smaller Than 651Gb?

Sep 7, 2011

I just purchased a new HP Pavillion with a 1.5 Tb drive. I want to shrink the C:drive down to about 100Gb, and create other drive letters, with roughly 500Gb, 500Gb and 400Gb.I went into Disk Management and began the process by attempting to shrink the C: drive, but the smallest it would let me shrink it was 651Gb. I got a message saying that unmovable system files prevented it from shrinking any more.I tried defragging, but that didn't get me any more shrink. Then I tried disabling the paging file and defragging again, but that didn't gain me any more shrink.CallThey said this was outside the scope of their warranty.

Recovering Windows 7 System On Another Smaller Hard Drive?

Aug 15, 2011

I have a duplicate image of my windows 7 system. I want to move my windows 7 system off from my 2TB drive on to a smaller 500GB drive instead. I used an imaging program to duplicate the drive contents onto the 500GB drive. My question now is, is it safe to switch to my 500GB as my primary drive and boot up from it without affecting my Windows 7 activation status, or do I need to de-activate it first on the 2TB drive then re-activate on the 500GB drive?

System Drive Content Getting Larger?

Nov 3, 2010

A few weeks ago I noticed that my Aronis TI 2011 images were getting larger each day. So I logged the amount of used space on my C drive from Oct 24 to Nov 1. The used space grew from 45.5 GB to 59 Gb in that time. It used to be less than 40 Gb for the longest time. I have not installed anything that would account for this growth, especially a few GB each day. Have scanned with MSE and Mal software removal tool and have found nothing. What should I do? Is there a log somewhere I could see where his growth might be coming from?

Installing Windows 7 Image To A Larger 3TB Drive?

May 20, 2012

Alright, I did a backup image in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit from a 500GB drive. I then took that out and put in a new Barracuda 3TB sata3 drive. After it was done restoring the image I extended the volume and of course it only gave me 2TB of space. So after reading a bit I needed to use Seagates disc wizard to format it to accept and show 3TB (2.79 useable) space which I did by hooking it up as an extra drive in another computer. Now my question is when I do hook it up in the new computer and put the image on again the process wants to automatically format the drive and in doing so I am afraid I will end up with the same 2TB's of space after extending the volume again.

Switch C Drive To A New Larger Drive?

Oct 25, 2011

So I have a 64GB SSD that is too full to do an iPhone update... decided to get a 128GB SSD.I have DriveImage XML, to copy a complete image of the C drive onto the new, larger drive. Now I have both drives plugged in, have initialized the new drive... But to create a 'simple volume' under disk management, I have to pick a drive letter. The issue is that I want the new drive to replace the C drive, but 'C' isn't available as an option. So, what do I do?Do I create a volume with, say, letter J? Then copy over the image... then unplug the old C drive and plug the J drive into the same cables? And then reassign the J drive as C? Or how can I boot onto the new drive?

He says that Windows creates a ghost temp file of what he's downloading on the 30G and thats why he's having this issue..

How To Recover A Primary Boot Partition ?

May 27, 2009

I have Windows XP64 and XP 2005 installed on adjacent partitions on an 80 GB IDE hard drive. I had been accustomed to using BIOS to choose the drive and EasyBCD to choose the OS. A few days ago I was unable to boot into this drive because I kept getting the error "NTLDR missing (press Ctrl-Alt-Del)." I tried using Microsoft's BCSetup2 (I think that's what it's called) but couldn't get a floppy disk to boot.

Being that there wasn't much on this hard drive, other than the Windows OS's, I decided to reinstall the Win64 on the first partition. I find now that EasyBCD does not install on my XP64, so evidently I must have had it installed on the XP MCE partition. I'm wondering now how I can go about accessing the MCE on that other partition, or finding or remaking the boot loader.

C Drive Or Partition Lists As Primary?

I just got my laptop back from Acer and they had given me a new hard drive. I restored a disk image backup that I had made from Acronis True Image. The backup seemed a little strange going in, but none the less it worked anyway. I then went to Disk Management to look at the setup and noticed that my primary partition is now listed as a Logical. I'm posting a screen shot of the partions and someone tell me if that looks right to them and if not how do I get my C drive back to Primary. As I said it boots ok but when I did the recovery with Acronis it didn't seem to go as smoothly as it should have.

Create A New Primary Partition At End Of Drive

Nov 20, 2009

Here's the scenario: I have a 1TB disk with several partitions on it.

#1: Primary partition with Vista on it.

#2: A 500GB primary partition used as storage/backup.

#3: A 50GB partition encrypted with Truecrypt, Logical drive

Now, I want to create a new Primary partition at the end of the drive, so I can install another copy of Windows 7. Notice my 500GB storage partition does not need to be Primary, but it is, and I cannot create any more Primary partitions. How can I change the storage partition to a logical drive, and have my new partition be Primary?

Change Active Primary Drive

Nov 28, 2009

In switching over from XP to 7 I found myself also buying almost all new components, except hard drives. Due to a number of events that no one would believe humanly possible, I managed to establish my "C:" and "D:" drives on hard drive 1, whereas hard drive 0 is a bunch of free space. The computer boots up to Windows 7 on "C:" on HD 1.

I want to switch cables on the SATA drives and then designate the new HD0 (which was HD1) as the primary active partition, but as we all know, I can't just switch cables as then the computer does not know to boot off HD0.

What the heck do I do to accomplish this?
