"Windows Cannot Format System Partition On This Disk"
Jan 20, 2011
Awhile ago I got myself two SSD drives and installed Windows 7 on one of them. I didn't move over my OS from my old 1TB drive or anything I just did a clean install. Today I finally finished making sure I'd transfered over all my files from the disk and I was about to format it when I got the message that can be seen in the above picture. It seems the old Windows (D: drive) is still set as the System drive and my new Windows OS (SSD C: drive) is just set as Boot but not System.
This makes me unable to format it and I have no clue on how to fix this. Does anyone know how I can give my new SSD drive the System status so I can format the old drive?
I just got a new hard drive and a dvd drive because both my hard drive and dvd drive both died. So I got it all set up in my comp and everything seemed to be going fine but I keep getting the windows could not format a partition on disk 0 The error occurred while preparing the installation. error code 0x80070057.
I've just purchased a new desktop Extra Value Desktop PC - Desktops | Ebuyer.com along with an OEM Windows 7 64bit. This is a fresh install on a brand new PC. Every time I get the same error message "windows could not format the partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057". I've just removing RAM and still same problem. Even tried install XP and after 3 hours fomating the drive it it came up with this error ""Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged."
I am trying to do a clean install of windows 7 onto my laptop, and I keep getting the error, "windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057" . I have reformatted the hard drive and tried clicking next from there. This is the 64-bit version of windows 7
Yesterday evening I was having computer problems so I decided to do a clean reinstall of WIndows 7. I cleaned out some partitions and then tried to put WIndows 7 on the fresh partition. The process began and then I got a mesage saying that Windows cold not format a partition on disk 0. This error occured while preparing the partition selected for installtin. Error code 0x80070057I also get a message when I restart the computer saying ¨Missing Operaing system¨ I´m guessing that that means I cant log in to fix this problem
A couple of weeks ago a storm blew through and knocked out my power for a moment, then it came back on. Within a few seconds, another wind gust and it ripped our power lines down.Got power back a few days later, and have been busy trying to fix this on my own but to no avail.
My computer booted into system recovery tools, start up problem fixes etc. none of them worked, leading to the decision to format my SSD and try to reinstall windows 7. I get to "windows is copying files" and it stays stuck at 0% for about a minute or two, then I get "Windows could not format a partition on disk 1. The error occured while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x8007057.
I concluded that I should try deleting the partition and creating a new one. That however, got me this message:Failed to delete the selected partition. [Error: 0x8007017].So I decided to try and format the drive, to this result:
Failed to format the selected partition. [Error: 0x8007057].
Same result as when I was trying to install. Puzzles me! I've still got a lot to learn.I've tried removing unnecessary RAM, same results.Having the same problem with a Vista 64 bit install disk, and have tried to install on my SSD and HDD with no differences.
System:
ASUS Sabertooth X58 MoBo Core i7 920 6gb DDR3 1600mhz corsair RAM RiDATA 32GB SSD (OS drive) 1TB Western Digital HDD and one other 500GB HDD (I forget the brand)
basically a bad partition will not allow me to wipe the computer clean, boot XP from the drive or add/change bios screen...i don't have tje kind of cash to buy or pay for repairs. what can i do?
i recently bought a new hard drive to put my os on, and i stupidly changed my old hard drive type from basic to dymainic, and its not letting me reformat it or convert it back to basic. When i try it says "Windows cannot format the system volume on this disk."
I am using win 7 ( Home premium ).My ram is 2GB .I use my PC alot with some heavy programs .So my system is slow down. I want to use Win XP .But Win 7 cant install win XP .I have read some internet page. They said I must format my system disk to install win XP .I dont know how to format this.
I currently have a windows seven cd disk that I purchased from retail and recently I have tried to see if I could use the data partition that came on my laptop in order to recover my pc when I tried to launch system recovery from the bios it would just boot to windows normally. instead of trying to start up system recovery using a partition I wanna know how do I make a partition on my pc, and how do I turn that partition into a recovery partition using my purchased copy of windows 7 that would all me to be able to use that partition instead of a disk in order to reinstall windows.
i am using windows 7 os. Actulay i format the system. after formating system whn i login , i am getting msg "windows detected hard disk problem and you may loss datas from ur drive c,d & e" bt my system condition is good.wt should i do for this?hw can i clear this error? pls help me
Computer management -> Disk management -> attach VHD The VHD attaches fine, and it is the correct file. But when it attaches I get the message: "you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I clicked cancel, and then tried to right click -> explore. I then got the message: "F: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."Out of all the tutorials I have read, the file should open just fine and let me explore it. Why is it asking me to format the disk? And is it safe to do so?The file system is listed as "RAW" and the status is "Healthy(primary partition)"I don't want to lose everything on the system image! Can I/should I format the disk?
I have an external harddisk that is encrypted using TrueCrypt. Each time I plug it in Windows prompts me to format the disk because it doesn't have any recognizable file system. Vista didn't use to do this. I suppose it's because of the UAC changes and a user couldn't normally do this in Vista. How to disable this prompt in Windows 7?
I am gonna do a format reinstall of Windows 7 and I noticed this partition which I believe was created when I first installed Windows 7. Should I just leave it there or can i delete this partition when I format reinstall Windows?
Can I format a Hard Drive with Windows 7 using a 2000 format disk. If so, what are the prompts i see and action on boot-up before I use the format C. Done it before but just forgot
My wife shout down her computer this morning took it on remote location for work today but never booted it up. When she got back home tonight it wouldn't boot up. I don't know what to call these screen but some Startup Repair screen. Just says Repair action: Boot sector repair, Result: Failed.I downloaded and burned to CD the boot CD for the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition but I don't know what disk I am even looking for. I see 3 partitions listed for one disk. The only one with a label is BDEDrive and it's 300 MB. The other two have *: as what I would call a label. One is 297.79 GB and the other is 12.34 MB. The BDEDrive is the only with with status of Active. NTFS on that partition and Other on the big partition.
I have my HP Laptop which came with Windows Vista as the OS. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 so I bought Windows 7 from my local store.I entered the disc and did boot from CD. It reached to the page where it shows the disk partition. I deleted the partitions and created new one. However, whenever I create the partition, it creates a primary one and gives me error saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.
Table top, Acer brand, Aspire M5700HDD: 500GBPart: 1. Hidden partition, 20GB, eRecovery2.Partition C partitioned by Acer, 240GB, OS3. Partition D partitioned by Acer, 240GBI plan to format both C and D partitions and make 4 partitions. So, check with Acer firstAcer's reply is confusing, saying that the hidden partition will be damaged if format C partition
I have a copy of windows 7 from a friend. (USB, possibly enterprise)It runs well, is official and can be re installed and is verified through the Microsoft site, so the media doesn't seem to be a problem.I was able to install Win7 Ult x64 on my WinVista HomePrem x86, but I went back through to clean the hard drive (it was full, I didn't format before) and after low level formatting I cannot reinstall the OS. The harddrives are completely empty, and I get stuck at "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition," after hitting next when you are selecting the HD partition to install on. I tried a couple of things already:
-Installing on another harddrive -Formatting using Hiren's bootcd -Using a hard drive with XP installed to see if it is an upgrade and not a full version (no luck, still wouldn't install) -diskpart > list disk > select disk 0 > list partition > active \ in cmd..I have three hard drives attached to the computer right now, they can't all be broken. T.T
I have two windows on my system, one in drive C and another in drive D. Both are windows 7. Now, I want to format the partition D but I cannot. could u please help me in this issue? I want just keep the windows in drive C and format all thing of drive D...
why does Windows 7 want always format a truecrypt partition? i have an external hard disk 2 partition ntfs file system 1 was encrypted with truecrypt 32bit under Windows 7 32bit everytime , Windows 7 pop up with a request to format the drive.i don't auto mount the partition, i mount the partition always when i need so when the partition is not mounted , Windows 7 asks me to format.
Recently my SSD failed so I tried installing windows 7 from DVD on my HDD but I always get an error message: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition."I've tried everything I could find here: I gave boot priority to the HDD, I unplugged every other device but nothing seems to work.
Recently, after trying to format a memory stick I have encountered some problems:
- After right clicking on the stick or on a partition and selecting format, nothing happens. Literally nothing, its like I didn't press it. - Another a bit troubling issue, is that when I tried to scan with my antivirus, I get that the scan engine cant initialize, although the whole software works. I am using Bitdefender Internet Security 2010
I am currently scanning with ESET Online Scanned for viruses, to be sure I don't have a nasty one, but from what I see is that other then that, everything works fine. Finished the scan, with no issues. Also the troubling memory stick, i went to another PC, and was virus free and also was easily formatted. So i am afraid is something related to the system or something like that.
I had to install windows 7 in my pc.....bt while installing a message always shows up saying "windows could not format a partition on disk 0.an error occured while preparing the partition for installation.error code 0x80070057"my hard drive is samsung HD502H(500GB) and have a partition of 93.1GB.
I wanted to create a new partition to try out linux. So I decided to shrink E: by 20 GB. I then formatted the free space into a new drive by right clicking and creating new simple volume. I was warned that the drive would be made "simple", but not knowing the implications, I went ahead with the procedure. Now on rebooting, windows won't load. I had made a repair disc, so was able to use it to check for any start up errors. It reported none. Moreover I used "diskpart" through cmd to find volume c: is dynamic.
I am on my grandparents desktop, and they recently had me dual boot Windows 7 onto their Windows XP machine, and they now no longer need XP anymore. The XP partition is listed as a System, Healthy, Active, Primary partition. The 7 partition is listed as a Boot, Active, Healthy, Logical partition. How can I delete/format the XP partition and make the Windows 7 a primary partition? I have tried by using Disk Manager, and Eauseus Partition Manager, but it won't let me convert it to primary, or format the XP partition.
I recently switched from a Mac to a PC. I cloned my system partition of my PC to my external hard disk, and I only realized later that the external HDD was in a Mac OS extended (journaled) format. I thought I would have to format that partition as NTFS and re-clone afterwards. I tried to remove that partition using Disk Utilities on my Mac but got an error message. Surprisingly, though, when I connected the external HDD to my PC, I can access that partition under My Computer, and when I open Disk Management that partition is listed as NTFS.
1) How can I tell if the cloned partition on my external HDD is ok? 2) Should I reformat it and start from scratch instead? 3) If so, should I be making an image OR a clone of my system disk (so that I can boot from my external HDD and restore my system if my internal HDD fails)?
I currently have a dual boot on my computer with Windows 7 and XP. Unfortunately as my computer is quite old my hard drive is not very big and with it being partitioned I am fast running out of disk space. So I tried to shrink the XP partition to allow me more disk space for Windows 7. Unfortunatley this would only let me shrink it by 83mb for some reason. I decided that since I barely use XP anymore that I would simply reformat the XP drive then try and merge them together. When I tried to format the partition it just gave the error "Windows was unable to complete the format". I then discovered in Disk Management that the Windows XP partition was the system partition which was causing the problem.
SO, problem is: I got this USB, it worked very well 'til some days ago. I can't format it, no matter what I try, e.g. formatting it using different formats, formatting it using Computer Management, formatting it in safe mode. None of these things seem to work for me, and I have no idea why. There's also something else to it: before it became unusable and not format-able, it was somewhere around 4GB, and now, when I want to format it, it gives only the option to format it using the capacity of 12.5MB, which doesn't work anyway. I've tried looking at unpartioned spaces in it, but there aren't any, so I completely have no idea how to go through this problem.
