I have an external HDD that I've been using with my Apple laptop (OS X 10.6.8). When I plug it into my Windows 7 machine it appears under Device Manager but does not appear in My Computer and I have absolutely no idea how to access its files. Any help?

View 1 Replies View RelatedNew external HDD won't show in "Computer". I Have searched a lot, but only find comments directing me to Disk management and Device manager. The Ext. HD is not showing there either. Power light is on. This is a Lacie 2 TB Minimus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive [URL] No "Doorbell" sound when I plug in or un plug the USB connector. The LaC i.e., troubleshooting page tells me to go to device manager, but like l said, it's not showing there either.
Plus, it seems to have knocked out several of my USB ports, and I had the warning flag next to several of them in device manager ,but I was able to get them back by right clicking on each line one at a time, Un installing, and right clicking on the heading for the group, and selected "scan for hardware change". Then in the tray, I saw Driver was installed, or device is ready, something like that. All the ports seem to be working now, and the yellow flags are gone.
I did then try the External drive again, but it is still not working. I also installed desktop manager, but it's telling me to plug in my external drive, and then to re start my device. And if I start Desktop Manager it says, "No LaCie Desktop compliant device found." So I have another computer that shares this monitor,so I shut this one down, and hooked up my usb keyboard and mouse to the other older desktop system running XP, and the older computer does recognize this external hard drive.
It is in My computer on the older XP system/computer. So I shut that one down and started this one, and it does not show up on this computer, but then I noticed my keyboard would not work. Had to switch the keyboard USB ports to the other front USB port. And I had the yellow flags back in device manager again. Had to un-install again and let the system re install (selecting "scan for hardware change). Windows 7 Home premium, 64 Bit, Compaq Desktop, model 2010.
I have just replaced my broken HP DV5 laptop with a new Samsung NP350V5C-A08.I have always run Ubuntu from an external USB hardrive, the boot order on my HP was:
a) Internal read/write optical disc player.
b) USB ports (for external drive).
c) Internal hard drive.
My Samsung ignores the Ubuntu disk and boots straight into Windows 8, I have gone into BIOS to look at the boot order but it is completely different to the HP one leaving me puzzled.I am missing using Ubuntu and any help to download the program onto my external drive would be welcome.

I've just received my Western Element 2,5Tb today. When I first plugged it in, it worked normally. But due to my over-excitement, I copied too much files at the same time and it wasn't working anymore. I regretted doing this immediately.
I have searched on the internet to find some solutions but all of them didn't work. I've checked the Computer Management, Disk Management, but nothing about my External HD showed up. In the notification area, my laptop still detected it and I can removed it properly [even though i can't use it at all].
I tried to connect to my USB and another Samsung 500Gb HDD. And it worked perfectly fine. Then, I tried to connect my new HDD to my sister's lap [she is using Window Vista] and it worked perfectly fine too.
okay the 1TB WD external was working fine all of a suddon it working. When I finally found it it said it was empty but its not its totally full. Ive trid a lot of different things.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 (Yeah I know, probably not the best machine for Windows 7) and any type of USB drive I put into a USB port will not show up in My Computer but it does show up in Device Manager and Disk Management. However, my iPhone will connect just fine.
I have checked all the drivers and they are up to date. I went to the Western Digital (my non accessible External Hard Drive) site and there were no new drivers for the drive. I un installed all of the USB Root Hubs and then re installed them. I have basically tried everything thing that I found after googling.
I'm having some trouble getting an external hard drive to be recognized by my computer. I have quite a few already, but I got another one because one of them won't read on my comp, although it will read on my netbook. The new drive I got has the same issue, no go on the comp, but works fine on the netbook.
I tried unplugging all of the other drives and even using the other cables to connect the new drive, but Windows 7 simply won't recognize it being plugged in. No "badump" sound and no icon in My Computer. Tried restarting, nothing. I tried it in all six of my computer's USB ports, but got no better result.
My computer is an Alienware M11x R1 (yes yes, gripe all you want, I like them!) running Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. Okay so since the day I got my M11x it has been freezing randomly. No one could find the source of this problem, though I seem to have located it recently...
Whenever I have an external HDD plugged in my system will completely lock up randomly. Can't move the mouse or do anything, the last sound that was playing hangs (Ie. if a song was playing the song would go kind of "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz-" continuously), and I have to shut it off by holding the power button. It can go for a week without locking up or it can lock up two times in a single day. It also does this with some random programs that it just doesn't seem to like very much.
I just went out and bought a new HDD to see if it was a compatibility problem (the old external I was using was fairly old) and it just froze up again while using the new one...
My computer stopped detecting the external hard disk suddenly. I tried locating the drive in disk management but it is not showing up there.

There are actually two extra ikons in Device Manager - one marked FAT Healthy (EISA Configuration) and the other just marked (GPT Protective Partition).The device is acknowledged as working properly in Device Manager.The files on this drive were created on a Mac, which may be the source of the problem? Initially noted that it wasn't showing in 'my computer' and so assumed I had driver issues and sought to update them from Dell's site. After doing so there was still no change, but noted that It was appearing in 'device manager'.I even tried updating the USB hubs from the Device Manager, and it states that they are all up-to-date with the correct drivers. Both external hard drives that i have tried has worked on other PC's so i assume that mine is the issue.

I am using my computer as a media center only. When I wake my computer it can take a while (30 seconds to a minute), before I can use it, due to it starting up my external hard drives, but I have noticed a couple of times, my computer will wake without starting up my external hard drives (able to use media center within 2 seconds). Does anyone know if there is a way to get my computer to wake up without starting up the external hard drives every time?

After recieving it today I backed up my old HD on to a My Passport I had lying around created my repair disk and set out to restore my new blank HD. When I got to the startup and repair menu I clicked restore from image and my computer scanned and could not find an image to restore from. The external is plugged in and I can see the backup files when it gives me the option to look for drivers but it wont recognize the external to let me load the files from it.

A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.
