BSOD On Initializing Chkdsk / No Cursor - Colored Garbled Pixels On Screen
Jan 25, 2013
I tried to do a routine (once a year) chkdsk via the command prompt Code: > chkdsk /r
> shutdown /r /f /t 1 . And upon the reboot, all I get is a black screen, no cursor, with ~4 rows of rainbow, garbled pixels at the very top of the monitor (certain pixels occasionally change colours). This occurs before the windows splash screen. I have left the computer as is, hoping it will eventually boot on its own with no luck. This was just a routine check. Some more information, I dual-boot with Ubuntu. I can mount and access the windows partition from Ubuntu, and I even ran ntfsfix in Ubuntu (which has some analogous functionality to chkdsk), but it didn't notice any problems.

I believe it to be hardware related but cannot get error returns from any program I've tested with, so is it software.?I can play games that run direct x in full screen and never see an issue, never encounter a crash or BSoD, never see artifacts. If I browse the net I can usually create the issue over some time, using a program such as premiere pro usually causes the issue and BSoD within 20-30 mins especially when rendering. If using vmware machines I can make the issue happen after some time as well. If I continue browsing the net when the issues begin to happen my browser will start to crash for no apparent reason as well. Windows Explorer will also crash randomly once it gets bad enough. After I began to encounter issues I took the laptop apart and cleaned it out very well, how ever there was very little dust inside it and no vents were even partially clogged. I did do a re paste about 3 weeks ago both cpu and gpu.
I have Installed the Latest Bios on the Motherboard, Video Card, Hard drive.I have tried doing a system restore to factory settings, a full format and clean install using a windows 7 disk and all ends up with same issues, which is why I believe it to be a hardware issue. (Sorry I did not make backups of the dump files prior to the formats)I have ran Memtest86 for over 3 hours, 3 full cycles. Prime95 for 2+ hours. Many hours of other various test programs such as BurnInTest. None have ever failed or returned an error message.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate. I wanted to connect my laptop to an external monitor so I pressed "Windows key + X", then clicked "connect display", then "extend."
On most computers, doing this will allow you to output the display to another monitor.
When I did it on my laptop, the screen started flickering and became garbled. It's too garbled to see, and I can't find the mouse and undo what I've done. I tried restarting but it's still like this.

I recently attempted an install of Windows 7 onto a friends PC. The specs are listed below. Here is a link to a screenshot of the problem www.ronnarozny.com.
This occurs after a Windows 7 install. The system boots to the Windows 7 setup, where personal options are selected. After this, a reboot will begin the POST, and prior to completion, this screen appears. I do not believe the POST has finished, and I do not think it is handing boot duties to the OS.
What I have attempted so far is:
Memtest - checked out ok.
Replaced CORSAIR mem with other sticks.
Reformat from command prompt on boot disk.
Removal of all hardware, including video card.
I am completely stumped on this issue, and any help would be appreciated.

first I was facing BSOD. So I tried going in by every type of safe mode, But it doesn't work, I just go to a black screen with moving cursor and I can't Open the Task Manager. So I tried system restore, failed with the CD. Then I tried the Grub4dos thing It failed as well. It just brings me to the black screen with white cursor. Also when I start in safe mode, it stucks at classpnp.sys and after awhile It goes to BSOD and reboots. By the way this all started when I installed a game, Dishonored.

am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Aspire, Intel i5-2430M 2.4 GHZ, 64 bit Operating System. We only bought this at the end of December, 2011! When I am on Blogger, I haven't noticed it otherwise, when I move my mouse, sometimes the whole screen goes patchwork. There are squares of yellow, green and orange covering the screen, except for the address bar. (I attached a picture) I can navigate to a new address and it goes away. I am just a bit concerned there is a virus. I have run a full scan with Super Anti Spyware and I quite regularly use Crap Cleaner.

When my computer finishes starting up, it ends with what looks like blobs of colored pixels in a line at the top of my screen. This happened for the first time tonight and I have no clue what happened. I took out my video card and plugged my monitor into the mother boards vga slot. Same result. Then i used a HDMI cable from my monitor to my motherboards HDMI slot. Still, with the same result. I plugged my Xbox 360 up to monitor with the HDMI cable and it looks fine so it's not on the monitor's end.
When the computer is loading, the screen stays black. Then when my desktop would normally show is when the pixels show up and the rest of the screen is black.

the screen going on the fritz only when playing a video. i have not tried playing a video on vlc or wmp to test this but it seems almost every time a video pops up on a website, or if i go to Internet, my screen goes crazy.per the other thread, i swept my old drivers and re-installed the newest (which was 12.9 beta) and everything is ok, cept these videos. to fix it, i have once or twice gotten lucky and been able to hit escape and it goes back to normal. otherwise, i have to hit the power button and make it go into sleep/lock mode. i have a second monitor hooked up and it doesn't do what monitor one does, which is very odd.card is xfx radeon r7770 ultra overclocked black edition (factory overclocked)p.s. tried to use the uploader for pic and it wasn't working for me at all. tried to use imgur also, said it was down for maint.

My mom has a Compaq laptop. It has Windows 7. Yesterday, the screen randomly turned a blue-ish green color. The Google Chrome new tab page is where she first noticed. It's pretty much wherever there should be white, there's that funny color. When I restart it, the white Compaq "Q" logo is green instead of white. The "Starting Windows" text is green and the light inside of the Windows logo is green also.

My Gateway runs great until a restart is requested by me or a program. A few days ago, it would restart just fine. When I select Restart, the computer appears to shut down fine, it beeps to restart, the Windows 7 screen begins to open but it freezes with three colored dots on the screen. It always stops in exactly the same place.
If I kill power, then boot again I get an offer for Windows to repair itself. If I let it, it cannot repair. If I select Boot Windows Normally, all is well. Except for this one problem, things are really running well. Odd. I've run Chkdsk, SFC/ SCANNOW, and PC Pitstop Optimize3. Nothing finds a problem or fixes anything.

1.For the past week been having issue with rpcnet.exe or something like that..i think it's a file that is included with dell lojack but I never paid for it so don't know why it's there. My Anvir program said new startup program with rpcnet was trying to load and I hit quarantine or delete every boot up. it seemed to appear every time I rebooted for days then and then just disappeared after a few more days
2.Being worried, I downloaded at least 3 other malware programs and ran them...no issues...
3.Last week updated to zonealarm 10.2 from 10.1. it now includes antivirus so I had to disable it because I use essentials...it took a reboot to 'take' but the antivirus did remain off then
4.As I told you before, that malwarebyte program was apparently doing more than ZA but I decided not to use it for real time protection and disabled it. All manual scans showed all ok
5.Thinking comodo may be a better firewall that ZA, I installed it yesterday morning. It installed ok but then crashed upon reboot to complete the install
6.In safe mode I tried to do system restore and it said C disk structure error and would I like to run chkdisk upon reboot..yes!
7.For the next few hours I tried every trick I could...wouldn't do a chkdsk..tried last good known configuration upon boot, tried the command prompt as an administrator..did chkdsk /f and /r and even one other one..never ran..ever..not even on reboot. Thing is I could stay in safe mode and surf the web and try to find answers with no worries..no errors at all. But when I rebooted, BSOD..the error codes I got lead to some sort of disk error..i couldn't defrag nor chkdsk. Heck the C drive still to this day doesnst show up as being able to be defragged but I only have 2 gigs of memory left on the machine so it probably cant be?
8.I uninstalled comodo with a generic uninstaller but since it crashed after I installed it, I thought comodo was the problem
9.I decided to do msconfig and then uncheck a bunch of things starting up..i unchecked so many when I rebooted it actually did work and boot OK! I also meanwhile uninstalled ZA to rule that out as an issue.
10.When I booted up, Anvir asked me about 75 things starting up with the machine, I saw most were Microsoft but got tired of hitting ACCEPT after about 30. So left the rest turned off for now.
11.Reinstalled ZA 10.2 and got immediate BSOD upon completion of install. I'm assuming this means it wasn't my other programs at and it just coincidentally worked because I deleted ZA and then unchecked startup items at the same time.
12.Went to safe mode and removed ZA
13.Reinstalled ZA 10.1 and got immediate BSOD
14.Deleted ZA and all works well. It HAS to be ZA that is the issue..correct?
15.Still cannot run chkdsk but the C drive does show up under the disk management screen
16.I also ran some other scan (SFS file check??) and that said was errors but I cant fix them since no chkdsk The machine seems to be back to "normal" now, I have just windows firewall on plus essentials antivirus. But I do want another firewall. I just think something is really fishy that I cannot run chkdsk and confirm the disk is ok. I cant find my dell windows 7 recovery disk but I have a full XP disk and tried to run it to get to recovery console but I got a BSOD with that disk and never got into it even. So any ideas what would prevent chkdsk from running even though I hit yes when it asks me to do it upon reboot? I cannot get over the nagging feeling something else is wrong here. one time I did get something about a dirty 'something' being set on the machine so I'm not sure if that's whats preventing me from running chkdisk.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64, Original Install OEM Hardware ~1 year, 3 months Original OS install
All drivers, BIOS, VBios up to date
Background: Laptop decides to randomly restart from time to time while I am playing poker and using a HUD display/hand reading program, VPN, & poker software. Not a huge load on the system, somewhat HD intensive with the hand reading from the HD.
This is the related error: Source: Kernel-Power Level: Critical Event ID: 41 It's happened 51 times since 9/14/11. No error code I've turned off where it reboots on a critical error, so I can see if I can generate an error code.
I decided to do CHKDSK, fell asleep & woke to the attached BSOD.

I also get blue screen when I run the extended test, or run a chkdsk. HD tune pro tells me that there are 1461 pending sectors and 1455 uncorrectable errors. Is this bad? 1464 pending sectors on my HD but 0 reallocated.

Everything shows up fine until the welcome screen after that it normally used to fade to the desktop but now it goes blank. The screen in Black with only the mouse pointer. Its not hung, i can move the mouse pointer. Then after a minute or so it advances to the desktop. Everything on the desktop loads up in less than 5s. The PC runs fine, it is really fast as there are only a few programs, but only boots slow. My total boot time is about 3-5 min. I think it should be like in a minute or so.I have not tweaked much with the system but have installed a few programs like MS office, Nero, Acrobat and Photoshop. These are the only heavy programs in the PC right now. The only games on the PC are AC1 and AC2. I have uninstalled my graphic driver and reinstalled. I already minimized the programs in the msconfig>startup to the minimum. I have run ccleaner, spybot s&d, Antimalware and i also have a trial copy of Kaspersky AV (upgrading later to 1-year license). there are no peripherals attached during boot except the USB keyboard and mouse. A printer is attached too but is most of the time turned off.

Recently, my computer starts up windows and after the loading screen it just sits at a black screen forever with a cursor and it doesn't even make it to the log in screen. I have tried safe mode with the same results. What I've Done So FarTried to Repair Startup with Windows DVD Tried to use sfc /scannow at boot (Says pending changes and needs to restart) Tried logging into my Ubuntu partition and virus scanning (None found) Tried copying Reg Files from Regback into config while I was in Linux Tried to Repair Install (But I can't log into Windows ) Tried to bootrec /fixmbr /fixbot /RebuildBcd (Which destroyed my dual boot linux grub, but I was desperate. And still nothing) Interestingly though, after I do /RebuildBcd command it says something like "Found Windows Installations: 0" Tried to System Restore (Gave me an Error, wouldn't you know) At this point I'm not to confident that this can be fixed. If anyone has any ideas I'm willing to try. Or if you have any snazzy suggestions on how I could fix it using another computer, I have a different Windows Pro x64 computer that I can put the HD in if there's someway I can save my data/fix it/repair install from there. I just don't know how.
Edit: I finished the chkdsk and there were no bad sectors, though it did give me a message "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50."I did a Windows Defender Offline scan with no viruses and I'm currently scanning with Kaspersky Rescue disk. I don't believe it is a virus, I think it's a corruptregistry at this point. I had just cleaned my registry with CCleaner before the shutdown that led to this >.<

I got a bad virus on my computer about a week ago. I decided to use my windows 7 installation disc to reformat my disk drives and reinstall windows 7. The installation goes smoothly and I am able to login to windows. But after I install drivers and updates, then restart the computer, I get the "starting windows" screen with the swirling logo. I can hear the chimes that sound when I get to the login screen, but the screen is black. I can make the cursor appear by moving the mouse, but I cant do anything else. I never created a system restore disc, so I dont have that to help me.I have done some tinkering and will tell you what did not work so far.First, like I said, I used the windows 7 install disc to reformat my disk drives. Then, I reinstalled windows. I installed the updates for my graphics card and motherboard. When I restarted, I got the black screen. I restarted the computer and used F8 to do a system repair. This detects no problems. I tried to use the "startup repair" on the windows installation disc. This does not recognize a problem. I have tried it several times. Same result. Next, I tried to use the repair options on the windows install disc. I went to command prompt and typed in: bootrec.exe /fixmbr, bootrec.exe /fixboot, and bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd. (An interesing note: When I used the RebuildBcd command, it said that it detected 0 windows installations.) After the first time I did that, I tried the startup repair and got my first and only error message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automaticaly". I checked the details and it said "Problem event name: StartupRepairOffline". If you need the rest of the details, I can provide them. But I tried the repair again, and there was apparently no problem. Yet, still got the black screen.I then reformatted again, deleted both drives, and made new ones. I tried to install windows again, and I can get to my desktop.(One thing I noticed is that before I install updates, the computer is saying that my monitor is a "Generic PnP monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter". I dont know much about computers so this may be normal before installing the graphics card updates.)This time, I was connected to the internet and tried to install the system updates first. After all 120+ updates installed, I restarted and got the black screen again.I decided to use the install disc again to reformat, delete, and recreate the hard drives. This time I tried to install windows on the second hard drive (Disk 1) Again, the install went smoothly. I started installing the graphics card and motherboard drivers, but this time it told me that my disk drive D needed to be formatted before use. I reformatted it (this took MUCH longer than the format option on the install disc), installed the drivers, and restarted. I still cant get into the login screen. Finally, I used the install disc to reformat, delete, and recreate the disk drives. This time I installed windows on the first hard drive (drive 0) again and got to the desktop. Now I tried to install the motherboard drivers first, then restart. I did this and was able to restart and get back to the desktop. Next, I installed the graphics card dirvers, and then restarted. Black screen again.
Here are my computer specs:
Windows 7 64bit OEM
EVGA P55 FTW motherboard
EVGA GTX570 graphics card
Intel i5-760 processor
Intel patriot 8gb ram

I have recently upgraded from Vista 64-bit to 7 64-bit. Before the upgrade I had installed and played many games (Battlefield 2 & 2142, FATE, Assassin's Creed, etc.) in full-screen mode with no problems.
Something seems to have happened after the upgrade however as now I am not able to launch some games and have had many difficulties with the others. I have updated the driver specific to my graphics card as well as the Catalyst ones and have checked all the other drivers for updates only to be told they were the most current.
On a related note, my Assassin's Creed is a digital download from EB Games. When I try launching it through DirectX 9 it asks me to insert the CD, and if I try to launch it by any other of the options, the CPU runs for about 5 seconds and then nothing happens.
I say nothing happens, but that's not true. A Windows Error Report is created roughly named AppCrash Assassin's Creed for each time I try to launch it.
As for the other games, FATE creates a process that runs in Task Manager, but nothing shows up on the screen, and occasionally Battlefield 2 does the same.
Is there something that I am missing? I am close to going back and doing a clean install of Windows 7 (instead of having the upgraded version) but would REALLY rather not have to re-install all the programs.

Problem starts when I log on to Windows. It takes over 1 minute for me to start typing or even being able to use my keyboard. I have tried other ports, still the same. I have tried other keyboards, still the same. The only one that I am able to use it a PS/2 style keyboard. All my other USB Devices seem to start up and run ok, it's only the keyboard. Also, I have tried other USB ports on PC as well.I called ASUS, they were ready to RMA the MOBO for me, which I bought back in 2009! Then he said it could be a Microsoft issue..This all started when I switched to 2x120 SSD's in a RAID 0 Configuration, but was probably like this and didn't notice because I had to wait 3-5 minutes for the computer to start up. My computer will boot up and I can get on the web in about 15 seconds now, but can't use the keyboard...
