All of my important files are located under c:usersusernameDocuments Filsystem is ntfs and 32 bit windows Vista. I want to prevent access to these files from other users who
- Can hack my windows password
- Boot up with ubuntu to access files on the disk
- can take my disk and connect to another computer as secondary drive and ectract files.
Is there a way in windows i can use to encrypt my files soo nobody can read these?
Because of a mistake I made while installing Vista, I wound up with the system files (about 1.6 Gig) on one small D: drive while all of the remaining Windows files (over 50 Gig) on the large C: drive. I now want to remove the D: drive and replace it with a large one. How do I move the system files to the C: drive?

No matter how I go about it i.e. simply clicking on rename, using safe mode or opening Windows Explorer as Administrator I cannot change the name or even delete it for that matter. It had to do a clean install since it was upgrading from Win. 2000 and it stored the previous installation in a folder called Windows.old. This folder takes up 6GB of space and she only has 3GB left on the drive. After all this work I don't want to install a new hard drive if I can avoid it. She can live with only 3GB of drive left but it would help if I could move the Windows.old to an external USB drive.
Can I move Windows.old to an external USB drive and just plug it in if I ever have to reinstall Vista? Since I bought the upgrade DVD I need the previous installation if I ever need to reinstall but I would prefer it to be on a different but accessible drive if possible. I found the Windows Transfer program but it just copies files. I didn't see an option to completely move a folder.
Whenever I try to delete a file in the Windows GUI (either from the desktop or from an open window), the file is deleted (usually) but a window saying "Recycling 1 item" or "Deleting 1 item" stays on the screen forever, until I use Task Manager to kill Explorer.

This latter one also won't work on my desktop. What gives? Can I uninstall Windows Explorer and reinstall? Will the 'recovery disks' that came with the computer allow this to happen?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe recently had a need to replace a hard disk. Our original files were all backed up with Windows Vista Backup. The backup process produced no errors and appeared to complete successfully. However, when we restored the backup to the new hard drive, we found that there were many missing files. To this point, it appears that the missing files are all .EXE files. In many cases, all the files were restored to a folder, except for the executable (.exe). We know that these files existed when the Windows Vista Backup was performed on the original hard disk. Moreover, we backuped the same files later using a different program and have confirmed the files were there.
Is anyone aware of a problem where Windows Vista Backup is either NOT backing up all the files or is NOT restoring all the files? Furthermore, it is odd that this seems to have affected only certain files which brings us to wonder if our security software could have blocked files somehow without our knowledge
Windows mail keeps trying to compact the the files when I close the program.It keeps trying and I get errors. How is this fixed? It's the most annoying thing as it doesn't quit, if I click OK - I get another error. How do I get it to compact the news/mail files? Never had this problem with OE I used this to compact and repair the database - it said it compressed it, but did not. WMail is still trying to compess the data base every time I close the program. How is this fixed once and for all? I'm also getting a little window pop up from the bottom bar saying "Data Execution Prevention closed Windows?" What the hell is "Data Execution Prevention?"

I had to make a bootable CD in order to format it. When the disk was in blank I inserted the Windows Vista DVD and the screen said "Windows is loading files" then the progress bar of Windows Vista appears however it stops. I waited there 1 hour, but nothing happened so i thought it was because I didn't format it to NTFS. Then I used GParted to format it to NTFS. I tried again, however it gave me the same results.

I then have the option to launch system repair or start windows normally. 1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.
2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".
3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.
4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.
5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........
I have had this problem for a while now, and it has really started to wind me up lately. I have read many threads and tutorials, and tried some out aswell, but nothing has worked unfortunately. Whenever I try to move or delete a file, the box comes up:
But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes. To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer. When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.............
I've had Vista Home Premium installed on my desktop PC for over a year now, but I never used Windows Media Center until recently and noticed this problem when I purchased a Media Center Extender. After choosing the folders (music, video and image) that I wanted in my WMC library (on BOTH my desktop PC AND Media Center Extender), only my image files do not appear in the libraries. Under "Picture Library" (again, on both units), all folders and sub-folders which I selected are shown but contain no "items". The files which I desire to view are .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, and .bmp formats and I have converted some back and forth between formats to see if that changed anything. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on this?
