Windows Explorer Crash
Mar 25, 2008Have a Dell M1530 laptop with 2Gb of ram running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Without installing any new programs, I have started getting frequent errors about a windows explorer crash. There is nothing in the error message that I can interpret to help find a solution. I can click on either find an online fix or just restart the program with the same results. It gives a restart of windows explorer and goes on.
I thought maybe installing SP1 would fix any glitches but it didn't. The service pack installed nicely and the machine runs fine otherwise. I checked for viruses and malware but nothing but the usual spyware which I cleaned off. I am not sure what windows explorer does. It is much more than the file system and the error happens without opening the regular windows explorer program. I see it is always running in the process list.
Windows Explorer Crash On Startup
Apr 21, 2008At every startup now, Windows explorer gets an appcrash in module ntdll.dll. I can however start Task manager. Using TM, I can start various programs such as Firefox, Thunderbird etc. It now seems that if I maximize Task Manager, I can start Windows explorer (using TM) and WE will come up without crashing. However, if the desktop is (or rather, would be) visible upon an attempted start of WE, it will crash. When trying to start explorer using TM, the crash will be in various modules, not only ntdll.dll. So, my understanding is that WE crashes upon startup because of something that is visible on the desktop. But there are only various icons, and nothing special.

Nov 8, 2008I have a problem with my windows vista (ultimate x64).It crashes in BSoD every time I try to download one or more large files at once (>=100Mb), or when I surf on many internet pages at once (e.g. when I start Opera and it opens 10 tabs simultaneously). I hope it's not due to my hardware, since it's a new computer, but I had another o/s before (XP) on the same computer, and it didn't crash.I hope you guys can save me =)

Sep 23, 2009My digital camera is a Kodak Easyshare and it takes video in .mov format and i have been using windows movie maker, it allows me to import that format fine. Been working on some video projects and I should have finished the project, before i reformatted my system, but thats in the past and this is now. (I learned my lesson)
after i reformatted and put vista back on, i tried importing and playing the video files in windows movie maker and the video will play ok, but i have no sound. I drag it to the timeline and expand the video to show the audio and the audio doesn't show up. I can play other sound files ok, it just wont play sound from .mov formats. I tried playing the video in quicktime and it plays fine with sound too. I tried another video editing software and it plays fine too. I am working on getting another video editing software, but for now, i will just use what i got, but i got nothing now. If someone could help that would be great.
I tried Windows Live movie maker, which btw, is really ugly, it doesnt even have a timeline, how can you edit videos without a timeline? anyways...i tried the video and it plays, but still no sound. I am thinking that there was a codec that was installed before, but i am not sure what that is. Is there a way to find out what codecs you should have or does it depend on what the user has installed and customized system?....
Video Hardware Crash, Computer Inactive
Feb 6, 2009I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. When I use the screen saver Aurora (and i think all screensavers) and leave the computer at night I come back to find it has been crashing and restrting all night. The screensaver comes on without error but at some stage while it's running I get a crash. My power settings are set too never turn off the computer and to never put it to sleep. I have no problems when the screen saver is set to blank. I have never been there to see it crash, it does it when the computer has been inactive for a long period of time. this problem was present with Vista SP1 and is not a SP2 issue.

Jul 24, 2008Been using Vista 64 Home Premium for a few months and can play games like Crysis, Bioshock, Gears of War (all DX10) no problem..However when I start to play C&C3, C&C3 Kanes Wrath, World of Warcraft, Company of Heroes, GTA SA, World in Conflict, they crash (genrally video crash then sounds goes then full reboot. Really want to get C&C3/C&C3 Kanes Wrath working (they both run for 10 minutes or so.) nearly at the point where I'm gonna go back to 32 bit operating system (but don't want to waste my hard earned money). Hotfixes don't seem to have done the trick.

Event Viewer Wont Load / Explorer Crash
Sep 11, 2009So I'm still chasing down why explorer keeps crashing, it's quite annoying. But I guess in doing so I messed with some setting (or maybe I didn't and this happened) and now my event viewer wont run, I even tried running it through cmd with the following commands: eventvwr.msc /s and just eventvwr.msc
I just tried to run event viewer to chase down my explorer crash, then that wont even run, I have no idea what the heck is going on... There's no "cause" except explorer usually crashes when I right click, or when I'm in my desktop folder. Those are the two main things. As far as the eventviewer, I'm clueless. If need be, I can do system restore, but more than likely that's an extreme measure for such a small issue. Its more an annoyance than anything else, it doesnt really bother me lol. Could it be AVG's context menu?
All I know is that this is really getting annoying, but anyway, if you guys have any suggestions that would be great. Do I need to post any screenshots of anything??? I can post them if needed. BTW I'm running Vista x64 SP2 on a HP dv4 lappy, the only taskbar items running are AVG, my pointer, and sound...
Cannot Delete Any Files In Windows Explorer (GUI)
Mar 31, 2008Whenever I try to delete a file in the Windows GUI (either from the desktop or from an open window), the file is deleted (usually) but a window saying "Recycling 1 item" or "Deleting 1 item" stays on the screen forever, until I use Task Manager to kill Explorer.

Mar 23, 2008I believe I've found a bug in Windows Explorer that I can reproduce reliably. If anyone can get this to a QA engineer in the Vista group at Microsoft
1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.
2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".
3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.
4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.
5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........
Windows Explorer Crashes When Moving Files
Dec 4, 2009I'm trying to move files by dragging a folder from the right-hand pane in Windows Explorer (Vista Business) to a different folder in the left-hand 'Folders' pane and every time I try this, Explorer stops working and re-starts. If I copy and paste the folders it doesn't seem to cause this problem, although even then, I have to [right click and 'Paste'] twice in the new folder - the first 'Paste' instruction never produces any effect. Should I be able to drag them? Why does 'Paste' require two attempts every time?

Feb 20, 2009HD crashed. Before I reformatted it, I went into the Command Prompt option from the Windows RE and copied all the files and folders to a usb harddrive. (I used the robocopy command from the command prompt.) Now, when I connect the hd to another machine, I cannot see and of the files or folders that I copied in Windows Explorer. I know the files are there becaue I can still see them from a command prompt and Windows (Vista) even reports that there are 27GB used on the disk. How can I see these files in Windows so that I can copy them back?

The last couple days I have been getting the following message when I right click on icons on my desktop or click on quick launch icons: Windows explorer has stopped working. It gives me the option to restart or search online for a solution. either one causes the icons in the system tray to go away and then reappear. this doesn't happen when i right click on folders on the desktop but any icons for applications it will. Also any icons in those folders will do the same thing. I have virus scanned with nothing found. I am currently scanning with adaware although i don't think it will find anything either. I have downloaded a few programs recently to convert portions of a dvd to mpeg for a class I'm taking but nothing else out of the ordinary.

May 7, 2008I just migrated from Windows XP Pro to Vista Ultimate (64bit). So far things have run *fairly* smoothly, but I am astonished at the length of time it is taking for me to copy files. For instance I want to copy 1/2 dozen folders from my "D" partition to my "C" partition (drag & drop using Windows Explorer - both partitions are NTFS, and I get the same result copying files on the same partition too). These files existed on my previous XP install, and when I copied them from D to C on XP it took around 2 minutes or so. Now the exact same files are taking upwards of 25+ minutes to copy in Vista! Is there some reason why Vista is acting like a decrepit 90 year old? :-)

Along with that I also got a COM surrogate error this morning when I tried to extact a file. I have no idea whats going on, I called Gateway support, and they are sending me a wipe disc but I'd prefer to just fix this.

I only had 1 pst file on my system but Vista backed it up to 7 different files. After installing a software (I'm not sure which, it could be VLC or ffdshow codecs or videopad), video thumbnails in Windows Explorer would not show a frame from the video, just the icons. I then downloaded a .reg file which restored the video thumbnails, but now it only shows the first frame of the video, which is usually blank. So now all my videos show a blank black picture, which was not so earlier. Before the problem started, it would pick up a random frame from the video.
Explorer Files Dont Work And Can't Delete Files
Jul 14, 2009While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)
WMP 11 No Video W/AVI Files
Mar 23, 2008I just upgraded to Media Player 11. I have XP. I downloaded some AVI files and they play, but sound only. Perfect sound, just no picture. They automatically open in WMP just as they should, and I tried right-clicking menus to switch views, but the view is at 100% full screen mode. I get sound, and I get visualizations (like bars and waves, alchemy, etc) instead of the actual movie. I have looked around the forums but don't seem to see anyone having this particular problem. The files are from a P2P site, but I don't think that's the problem as the sound works fine. And mpeg files from the site play fine.

Feb 4, 2009Just installed vista x64 SP1 with all latest updates, installed latest Shark codecs and K-lite codecs. Have no problem playing video files in Media player, but the same video files are not properly played in MediaCenter. They blink from time to time. It looks like a problem with codec, but after installing Shark and K-lite codec packs the problem still the same. May be Media center gets different codec. How do I change it?
My second question is: How do you add extra programs to Media center in vista x64? In XP MCE 2005 you could just drag desired program to the start button and prop it there and it would end up in MCE. It doesn't allow to the same in Vista MCE. If you drag the program to start button it will open MCE, but you won't find the added program in MCE
Playing MP4 Video Files With Media Center
Mar 22, 2010I have a Sony DSC-W290 digital camera that take HD video in 720P with the extension of "MP4". I can play the files on my computer with QuickTime player, but when I try to play them with Windows Media Center on the same PC, it says "Cannot play video. One or more codecs required to play this content cannot be found." The first time I tried to play these in Media Center, it downloaded a codec first before attempting to play, but it still cannot play them. How can I make Media Center play these video files?
