Windows Explorer Crashes When Moving Files
Dec 4, 2009
I'm trying to move files by dragging a folder from the right-hand pane in Windows Explorer (Vista Business) to a different folder in the left-hand 'Folders' pane and every time I try this, Explorer stops working and re-starts. If I copy and paste the folders it doesn't seem to cause this problem, although even then, I have to [right click and 'Paste'] twice in the new folder - the first 'Paste' instruction never produces any effect. Should I be able to drag them? Why does 'Paste' require two attempts every time?

why shouldn't they feel that way? Windows XP is noticeably faster than Vista on the same hardware, and it gets by with much less RAM and hard drive space. Microsoft's Service Pack 3 makes XP even faster, but the same cannot be said of Vista's Service Pack 1. And Windows Explorer crashes far more often in Vista (preceded, of course, by the notorious Green Ribbon of Death). Why, XP's staggeringly superior hardware support alone makes a convincing case for dumping Vista in favor of its predecessor.
Problem is, downgrading a Vista PC to Windows XP can be a chore, and doubly so if you want to do it without reformatting your hard disk. The main roadblock is Windows Setup, which won't let you install an older version on top of a newer one; you are left with the tedious task of fooling Setup into thinking that there's no Windows at all on your PC.-Next: Regress Without Reformatting >

I don't know if this is the correct NG because the problem is in Windows Esplorer 8 Please redirect me if not. Every time I download a file from the net, and right click in the save-as dialog box, the windows explorer crashes and have to be restarted or shut down. I am using Window Vista ultimate Norwegian edition with all updates. This started to happen a few week ago.

Each time I attempt a right click to access the context menu Windows Explorer crashes. This is true whether I use Explorer or PowerDesk Pro 7 as my file manager. As a result I am unable to zip files, rename files or run executables as the Administrtor. The error message I get is simply that "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I suspected that possibly Norton 360 was the culprit, but I disabled Norton 360 and the problem persists. I believe this problem did not start until I installed Vista's SP1. I am running Vista Home Premium on a powerful MicroExpress machine with ample RAM.

I recently purchased a nice shiny new HP Pavilion DV7-1130US. It came with vista ultimate x64 SP1. I wanted XP but that was not an option. For the first few hours it was very buggy and explorer was hanging alot. After awhile it got better and for about 2 weeks i was really starting to enjoy my lovely new laptop. Well today, for from what I can see no reason whatsoever, my laptop has become unusable. My symptoms are similar to those discussed in this thread: Windows Explorer Crashes I boot up, log in, everything seems ok for the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then explorer freezes and I cant access or use any applications, everything goes into "not responding" mode, and none of my clicks register. Then 2-5 minutes go by and all my clicks happen at once. It seems like explorer restarts once or twice during this too as I get the "ding" sounds.
I have also received some memory errors, and fatal application crashes from various applications. I cant even do anything, I tried to get to system restore in the first 30 seconds after boot up when the computer is usable, but i cant make it and am not sure where system restore is located. I love my new laptop but I am so frustrated right now that I could smash it against the wall. I blame vista, as I am using an old ass XP desktop right now that works absolutely fine, never ever crashes, yet my shiny new fancy HP dual core 4 gigabytes of ram vista x64 bit laptop is ****ing worthless............

I have just reformatted my computer and had a clean install of Vista business and service Pack 1. Everything is running perfectly except for one "small" problem. For no reason whatever it seems Windows Explorer crashes and immediately starts up again.. I don't lose any information and everything appears to be normal after the restart except for the fact that my icons go to different places even inspired off "saving the icons".
All my drivers up to date, my BIOS is up-to-date and I can think of no reason why this should be happening. Nothing in particular seems to start it. It will sometimes happen when I click on icons or right click on the file that I want to delete etc

I have a x64 bit Vista operating system, which I've only had for about a month. Today I tried to right click one of my desktop icons, and it caused my Windows Explorer to crash, and then restart. This is true with all of my desktop icons.

and I don't get it. 'windows internet explorer has stopped working.' and then sometimes when I start it---the links are all missing. All I have is the basic IE7 with the Yahoo toolbar, latest version. The next time it happens, I will take a SS. I may have to go to FF which is not my preference. How do you get FF be the default browser for yahoo mail, for example?

I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.

I am moving a lot of my games out of the Program Files folder into C:Games so that UAC doesn't ask permission to play most of my games anymore. The problem is that, after I move the game folder, even though the game plays perfectly, it disappears from the Game Explorer and I can't seem to get it added back. The specific game i'm trying with is Lord of the Rings Online. (I moved World of Warcraft and it fixed itself instantly). Everquest 1 also disappeared and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it back in the game explorer other than dragging in the exectuable. Is there a way to get the official Game Explorer icon back for Lord of the Rings Online with the full game rating and ESRB rating and all after moving the folder?

I have all of my personal folders on the D drive. Following a reinstall of Vista64 I again pointed the location of my personal folders back to the D drive (where the folders remained). I was able to take care of all of them except the Downloads folder which does not have a location tab. I am sure it was there on previous installs. What can I do?

I have googled this to death and I have also search here and I have not found an answer. I am ready to migrate to Windows 7 and I am trying to move my wife's desktop items to another folder on another drive but I am finding this simple task annoying and impossible since all it wants to do is place shortcuts on the target folder.
I am trying to do this as an Administrator but no matter what I try, I get the same results. I am sure there is a simpler way to go about doing this but... I am also sure I can't find it!

I just bought a brand new computer less than a month ago. A Dell with over 3 ghz processor, 3 g of RAM, and 300 g hard drive. I made sure it had the best video card, etc for playing games. I bought this computer to play Spore, which is a pretty big game. I just want to say that I hate Vista. I have had nothing but problems with it! I fixed most of the problems with Spore and moving files, etc. But I can't get Civilization 4 to work on it.
I bought Civ 4 for my husband for Christmas, but it won't work. While loading, An error pops up that says "Sid Meier's Civiliaztion 4 has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Of course, it never has. We've tried everything. We even tried running it in Windows NT compatibility mode. I am so angry with Vista. I regret buying this computer now, because in a few years when a better operating system comes out, this computer will be worthless.

I have a Dell XPS T450 desktop with Win 98se. I want to buy a DellXPS 420 with quad processor and 4 gig ram etc. I just need to move doc. files, a lot of .jpg files, mov files, and Outlook Express, I have very important files with large attachment stored in OE
My son got a new loaded Dell 420, 3 men came to the house from Dell to set it up and move his data from the same type of machine that I have. After they worked on it a while they told him it could not be done and that he would have to call Dell and tell them to put XP into his machine! These were people Dell sent! Anyway, I have the same kind of files. I don't expect to move my old programs. Will I be able to move my files onto Vista Premium?

I have a bit of a problem with moving files around...instead of trying to explain it Ill just list the things that is wrong:
ctrl+C, ctrl-V, ctrl+X does not work
trying to cut/copy/paste from right clicking does not work
drag/drop does not work
I CAN open the file and Save As.. to put the file where I want it. This is exclusively with files, I can do whatever I want with text without a problem. everything is available to use in the right-click menu, and when I cut a file it shades the file, but if I try to paste it somewhere else it does nothing, the file stays shaded where it originally was.

Recently, it seems, a lot of vista machines are experiencing explorer crashes. Mostly mine are from ntdll.dll but they are all split. It also mostly crashes when I move files, open control panel, or right click, the latter being the most significant. I have disabled every programs' context menu to see if it was that and nothing. It still crashed. ShellExView doesn't seem to do any good either. I've been using autoruns from SysInternals. I'm going to upload all the crash information.
Other than that there isnt much else to explain. Usually I'll be working along then boom, explorer is restarting... It even did it to me just from adding a quick launch icon. I have no idea what the cause is. Well here are the crash events in order of occurrence, top being most recent:......

I accidentally downloade Virtumonde last night and have ran McAfee virus scan enterprise and Spybot and both have gotten rid of the trojan and spyware. At least that's what they tell me. Now spybot tells me that there are registry changes happening from time to time and anytime I try to start the control panel or My Computer, explorer.exe crashes and reboots. I'm about ready to just re-install Vista and go back to factory settings and start all over again.

I have been running the 64 bits version of Vista for some days now, but I am facing a lot of problems. A few weeks back, when i was still running the 32bit version of vista, everything ran smooth. I could game, chat on msn, browse with mozilla, and use my favorite code editor programs with no lockups, not freezes and no insane lagspikes / framedrops. A few days ago, I decided to reinstall my computer, because it was cluttered with useless stuff, and it gave me explorer crashes every now and then. I went for the 64bit version of Vista Business. That's where it all started. Running this OS, limits me a lot. I can either update my computer, browse, chat, play WoW, or listen to music, but I cannot do that at the same time, something I could when i was running the 32bit version. I have tried a lot of things. I made WoW run on my 2nd core and my iTunes on the first, I have tried the optimization tool from AMD, I have increased my vid card's memory, all without any success. When I run World of Warcraft, It consumes the whole second core, and around 95% of my RAM. On my 32bit OS, it used only 20% of both cores together, and 55% RAM. My hardware should be able to do this, and it has been done. But for some reason, the x64 OS doesn't seem to do any good.

Windows Explorer had been working fine but now it won't (1) resize to full screen, (2) paste any file anywhere or allow me to drag and drop files. This latter one also won't work on my desktop. What gives? Can I uninstall Windows Explorer and reinstall? Will the 'recovery disks' that came with the computer allow this to happen?
Also, I have a file I want to inspect, a CBS.log file, and it says I need the administrator permission to do this. How do I obtain this. I'm no dummy when it comes to computers but I cannot figure this one out on Vista.

I believe I've found a bug in Windows Explorer that I can reproduce reliably. If anyone can get this to a QA engineer in the Vista group at Microsoft
1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.
2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".
3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.
4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.
5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........
