Moving A Few Files Around And Organising My Folders When I Lost A Few Files From A Folder
Sep 16, 2009I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.

Mar 10, 2009I have all of my personal folders on the D drive. Following a reinstall of Vista64 I again pointed the location of my personal folders back to the D drive (where the folders remained). I was able to take care of all of them except the Downloads folder which does not have a location tab. I am sure it was there on previous installs. What can I do?

Mar 6, 2010I have googled this to death and I have also search here and I have not found an answer. I am ready to migrate to Windows 7 and I am trying to move my wife's desktop items to another folder on another drive but I am finding this simple task annoying and impossible since all it wants to do is place shortcuts on the target folder.
I am trying to do this as an Administrator but no matter what I try, I get the same results. I am sure there is a simpler way to go about doing this but... I am also sure I can't find it!
Moving Files, Can't Get Civilization 4 To Work
Dec 25, 2008I just bought a brand new computer less than a month ago. A Dell with over 3 ghz processor, 3 g of RAM, and 300 g hard drive. I made sure it had the best video card, etc for playing games. I bought this computer to play Spore, which is a pretty big game. I just want to say that I hate Vista. I have had nothing but problems with it! I fixed most of the problems with Spore and moving files, etc. But I can't get Civilization 4 to work on it.
I bought Civ 4 for my husband for Christmas, but it won't work. While loading, An error pops up that says "Sid Meier's Civiliaztion 4 has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Of course, it never has. We've tried everything. We even tried running it in Windows NT compatibility mode. I am so angry with Vista. I regret buying this computer now, because in a few years when a better operating system comes out, this computer will be worthless.
Moving Files From 98se To Premium
Jun 6, 2008I have a Dell XPS T450 desktop with Win 98se. I want to buy a DellXPS 420 with quad processor and 4 gig ram etc. I just need to move doc. files, a lot of .jpg files, mov files, and Outlook Express, I have very important files with large attachment stored in OE
My son got a new loaded Dell 420, 3 men came to the house from Dell to set it up and move his data from the same type of machine that I have. After they worked on it a while they told him it could not be done and that he would have to call Dell and tell them to put XP into his machine! These were people Dell sent! Anyway, I have the same kind of files. I don't expect to move my old programs. Will I be able to move my files onto Vista Premium?
Windows Explorer Crashes When Moving Files
Dec 4, 2009I'm trying to move files by dragging a folder from the right-hand pane in Windows Explorer (Vista Business) to a different folder in the left-hand 'Folders' pane and every time I try this, Explorer stops working and re-starts. If I copy and paste the folders it doesn't seem to cause this problem, although even then, I have to [right click and 'Paste'] twice in the new folder - the first 'Paste' instruction never produces any effect. Should I be able to drag them? Why does 'Paste' require two attempts every time?

Sep 4, 2008I have a bit of a problem with moving files around...instead of trying to explain it Ill just list the things that is wrong:
ctrl+C, ctrl-V, ctrl+X does not work
trying to cut/copy/paste from right clicking does not work
drag/drop does not work
I CAN open the file and Save As.. to put the file where I want it. This is exclusively with files, I can do whatever I want with text without a problem. everything is available to use in the right-click menu, and when I cut a file it shades the file, but if I try to paste it somewhere else it does nothing, the file stays shaded where it originally was.

Feb 20, 2009HD crashed. Before I reformatted it, I went into the Command Prompt option from the Windows RE and copied all the files and folders to a usb harddrive. (I used the robocopy command from the command prompt.) Now, when I connect the hd to another machine, I cannot see and of the files or folders that I copied in Windows Explorer. I know the files are there becaue I can still see them from a command prompt and Windows (Vista) even reports that there are 27GB used on the disk. How can I see these files in Windows so that I can copy them back?

Mar 23, 2008I am trying to transfer files from my old computer hard drive using an usb 2.0 enclosure. My new computer is running Vista, the old hard drive is running xp. When I plugged it in, my computer sees it as a mass storage device, but I cannot access nor see any files on the old hard drive. I'm getting kinda frustrated, I tried to link the two computers via ethernet that didn't work. My old computer has motherboard issues and the usb ports don't work. And it will not burn dvds it errors out, so I couldn't transfer my info that way. Am I doing something wrong here? Can someone give me some advise?

Apr 8, 2009Our new computer vista home premium, I use windows mail as e-mail (no outlook avaible because I only have Office home/studend edition). On old computer (windows xp) I used Outlook, I copied al my e-mails to an external harddisk, so now I try to open the mail (on ex. harddisk) and can't open them because they are all msg files (?) I searched every where if it is possible to open these files. If I change the extension to open them (e.g. word etc.) it is still abacadabra for me. Maybe I had to change the extension of the e-mails before I copied them to ex.harddisk??? Old computer is gone already so I have a "problem" now. I don't know I this is the right communitie

Feb 21, 2009Recently I upgraded my computer. I have some hidden files on my external from my old system (XP). I cannot, for the life of me get these files to open.
Here is what I have tried:
- Changing ownership (after disabling the easy sharing folder option)
- Working with the admin command prompt (every time it said the folder on my external was a bad or syntactically incorrect entry).
- Changing user permissions.
- Logging in on safe mode and trying the above things.
The files show up as green text, and even after all of these attempts (and copious head-against-wall banging) I cannot open the files. Every program I try to open them with says “You do not have permission to access this file”. A similar message is displayed every time I try to move or change the files.
I have been able to open a few of the files (since the problem began) even though they do not seem to be different file types or status’.
I read a few threads similar to this, but every method has failed, and my problem seems a little different given the XP to Vista nature of the problem and the green text nonsense.
Tranfering Files With External Hard Drive
Feb 15, 2009I have Windows XP 2003 with service pack 1 on it. I wanted to transfer itunes, pictures and my documents to my newly purchased laptop (Vista). I had a simpletech ex. hard drive that i kept my stuff on from my old computer. Well I tried to take that hard drive that was in sync with my old computer and plug it into my new laptop through a usb port and my laptop didnt recognize it at all. I tried to figure it out for hours and nada.
so later i re-plugged my hard drive back into the old computer through usb port thinking, I wonder if it will read it on there still?, and it doesnt recongize it there now either. what do I do? did my hard drive fail? and i s.o.l now because i tried to transfer files, pictures and music from windows xp to vista without doing microsofts easy transfer program?

Jun 10, 2009My laptop broke. It no longer has any power to it...without spending money to confirm, I believe the motherboard is bad and all is lost. I know I can get an external HD to retrieve my photos & files from the computer buit what about my Windows Mail? I had 200-300 emails on it (and no, I didn't save a copy on the server 'cause I didn't know better). Do I understand correctly that there is no way for me to forward them into Windows Mail on my new computer?

Mar 12, 2009I am writing to this Forum in desperation because I cannot find any way to get in touch by email with Windows Live OneCare even though I am a paid subscriber. I have NOT had a good experience of MS tech support. After 18 months of endless problems with Windows VISTA Ultimate Edition V 6001 I now wish to reformat my computer and get RID of it altogether, replacing it with System 7 for which I have a serial number and a beta download from the recent Microsoft online download offer.
As VISTA seems to have eleminated DOS altogether and the old FDisk command doesn't work from a command line start, I have tried to reformat from my OEM Vista Ultimate Edition re-installation DVD which I am certain used to offer me reformat and partitioin delete as the first options but that no longer seems to offer me any reformat option at all and not only instists only on re-installing VISTA (which I no longer want) but leaves the old installation in a directory renamed "WindowsOld" which VISTA will then not allow me to delete....

May 31, 2009I wanted to see what kinda the other vista boot screen would be if you untick the "No GUI boot" thing from msconfig. However, when I booted Vista loads that picture (there is no moving bar or anything) and suddenly gives me this error code: 0xc0000225: NLS data is missing or corrupt, vista cannot boot, contact system administrator, blah blah blah.
is Vista really this kinda OS? You disable GUI boot and you need to reinstall the whole OS? I really need to know how I can fix this. I also have ubuntu on this same pc and I can fully access vista files with it. Safe mode also gives that error.

I've been unable to find one. To be certain we are talking about the same thing. Double click and enter a folder on your Desktop. Once there, how do you move to the folder above that folder?

Jun 8, 2008However, I now cannot backup my email. Before I would copy the dbx files and it would take about 10 minutes to do 5gb. Now however - I have 400,000 eml files (I have a lot of email from my web businesses). These eml files are all small. So my problem is that windows first of all takes approx. 2 hours just to calculate the damn size. Then when it eventually starts to copy the files from one location to another (Either on the same RAIDed sata drives, or to another) it estimates days of transfer time left. And I know the calculations are never right, so I left my PC on for 9 hours one night and it wasn't even half way through! It was transferring at 2mb per second! I can upload the data to the internet and back faster than that!
I mean - what the hell? If 98 can do it, me, 2000, xp... what's gone wrong with Vista? So far it's been a pile of junk and it's driving me mad! I'm really trying to like it and make it work, but it's about to be sent back to the shop. So folks - can you tell me why this nonsense? How do i get around it? How can I backup these thousands of tiny files without leaving my PC on for days (I want to do a 10 min backup each day to another sata drive, simple task).

Apr 20, 2008I had my own motherboard start playing up on a machine I use with Vista Business on it.I upgraded it from XP Pro Feb 2007. When it started playing up I changed the motherboard and CPU and thought that I would have to do a repair install, then install motherboard drivers and possibly have to activate all over again the same as you do with XP in this situation.Nope.I could NOT do a repair install on it and in fact had to lose the whole thing and install fresh!I have my own image backup using True Image 10 Home version so can get data back from there but it isnt the ideal setup.What happens, in the future, when a business with Vista has the motherboard go bang? They have to lose everything the way I did and start again? Talk about a BIG problem for Microsoft if so.So, after I quietened down I thought - no it must just be my mistake. I looked around and I cannot prove I was wrong.If there is a way to repair install so you can move everything to a new machine the same as you could for XP.

Feb 1, 2009The huge number of fonts supplied with my version of Vista (don't know if they're all the same) makes for a very long list in the font box of most of my programs. In there are a WHOLE bunch of international fonts for languages I'll never need. But the system doesn't want to let me move them out of there into some other storage folder and/or delete them - it says I need permission. I looked at the security settings for those files and they are currently owned by "trusted installer". Administrators can't move or delete these files. As administrator, I can grant myself the permissions to let me move them. there is a warning message about possibly making harmful changes to the system. Is there any danger in doing this? Otherwise, any way to mask these fonts without uninstalling them?

Feb 6, 2009I replaced it with a Vista pc. I thought that I would have no problem moving my data because on my other setup, I had kept all of my 'stuff' on a separate HDD (partitioned into 4 parts). Once I had gotten my Vista up & running, I felt ready to move-in my data drive from the xp machine. When I cracked open the case, I found that it was a sata setup -- my data drive was ide.
I got this Addonics IDE to Serial ATA Converter to 'make it work'. This converter is a small circuit board that plugs into the ide connection on the hard drive. You use all leads from a Y power plug to power the ide hard drive & the circuit board (the circuit board uses the small floppy) a sata wire plugs into the circuit board & into your motherboard. I changed the mode select from cable to master. (as directed in the feeble instructions) On my motherboard there are 4 sata plugins. 1 is my primary HDD. 2 was my DVD. I plugged the converted ide drive into 3. When I started up Vista. I got a black screen. I let it set for about 3-4 minutes........
