Transfer Files, External HDD Enclosure
Mar 23, 2008
I am trying to transfer files from my old computer hard drive using an usb 2.0 enclosure. My new computer is running Vista, the old hard drive is running xp. When I plugged it in, my computer sees it as a mass storage device, but I cannot access nor see any files on the old hard drive. I'm getting kinda frustrated, I tried to link the two computers via ethernet that didn't work. My old computer has motherboard issues and the usb ports don't work. And it will not burn dvds it errors out, so I couldn't transfer my info that way. Am I doing something wrong here? Can someone give me some advise?

I have Vista Ultimate 64 installed on my new pc (AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+ processor, Asus M2N-E mobo, 4 X 1gb Kingston pc2-6400 ram, WD 500gb SATAII hard drive, Asus GeForce 8500GT Silent 512mb video card, Antec Sonata III 500W case, LG 20X DVD+- drive). I wanted to buy an external hard drive to transfer my family pics and vids from my XP box to my Vista box. Been reading about some external hard drives not working with Vista x64. I've also read that I might ned to re-install Vista with the external hard drive connected. Can anyone recommend an external hard drive that will work with Vista x64? Need at least 250 gb hard drive but maybe around 500-750 would be optimal (wife takes lots of pics/vids of the kid ).

They are connected through a wireless network set to private, with file sharing and network discovery and no passwords required. Both users are set to administrator with no password required. What I want is permission to transfer files or folders between the C drives of both machines.
I get as far as seeing these drives when I click on the computer's network location but then cannot gain access to the drive itself. I feel as if I'm close. I've trying playing with the permissions on both C drives and it looks like I've set everything I can.

I want to transfer all my files ect onto a standby computer, to have a fallback onto the information contained in them. I was under the impression that the necessary software for the transfer and Synchronization was in Vista Windows, but having connected the computers with a transfer cable (which was installed as new hardware on both computers) nothing further happened although I was supposed to get instructions on the Standby computer how to proceed with the transfers.

can a hacker in my apartment complex who really wants to, connect to this router and hack into my laptop's hard drive and steal/transfer files? I have not shared any folders. I am wondering if they can hack through Vista file sharing, to access folders that aren't even shared. If so, how long would it take them to hack in if they wanted to? (I have since secured my router after leaving it open for two hours, but am asking this question for peace of mind.

I just replaced my 80GB drive in my laptop with a 160GB Drive. Most of the
software I am re-installing from the installation media. However I still
want access to my files and other s/w [setup.exe, *.msi, installation keys,
etc] on my old drive. As such I purchased an IDE HDD USB enlcosure for my
old drive. However when I plug it in the drive just makes a regular light
buzzing sound

I tried out Vista Ultimate 64bit for a month and got whipped by driver issues. I installed Vista Ultimate 32bit on a 2nd partition and tried using Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files and settings from the 64bit installation and pick them up in the 32bit installaion. This is the error I get every time I try to complete the transfer: "The store you selected was saved on a 64bit machine. Windows Easy Transfer cannot apply the data." Is there a way to use WET to transfer files from a Vista-64bit installation? If not WET, is there another utility?

Our new computer vista home premium, I use windows mail as e-mail (no outlook avaible because I only have Office home/studend edition). On old computer (windows xp) I used Outlook, I copied al my e-mails to an external harddisk, so now I try to open the mail (on ex. harddisk) and can't open them because they are all msg files (?) I searched every where if it is possible to open these files. If I change the extension to open them (e.g. word etc.) it is still abacadabra for me. Maybe I had to change the extension of the e-mails before I copied them to ex.harddisk??? Old computer is gone already so I have a "problem" now. I don't know I this is the right communitie

Last week I upgraded a HPxw4400X workstation from WinXP Pro w/SP3 to Vista Business. I did a full backup and also used FAST (files and settings transfer wizard). However, I soon found out that the DVD drive was "broke". HP told me it was because of the upgrade. They said to do a fresh install. Did another backup, fresh install, then a restore. Had lots of problems with BSOD, but a selective restore got it working again. But he can't see MS Office, nor navigate to it. I can see it when logged in as an admin. I thought of copying files and folders between profiles (he has 3 of 'em - , ., and ..000). The former is the oldest so I thought I could copy the App Data and User Data over it'd work (in both Documents and Settings, and Users), but it didn't work. I've been here working on various issues for 28 hours, so I'm not thinking as clearly as I'd like.

Recently I upgraded my computer. I have some hidden files on my external from my old system (XP). I cannot, for the life of me get these files to open.
Here is what I have tried:
- Changing ownership (after disabling the easy sharing folder option)
- Working with the admin command prompt (every time it said the folder on my external was a bad or syntactically incorrect entry).
- Changing user permissions.
- Logging in on safe mode and trying the above things.
The files show up as green text, and even after all of these attempts (and copious head-against-wall banging) I cannot open the files. Every program I try to open them with says “You do not have permission to access this file”. A similar message is displayed every time I try to move or change the files.
I have been able to open a few of the files (since the problem began) even though they do not seem to be different file types or status’.
I read a few threads similar to this, but every method has failed, and my problem seems a little different given the XP to Vista nature of the problem and the green text nonsense.

My laptop broke. It no longer has any power to it...without spending money to confirm, I believe the motherboard is bad and all is lost. I know I can get an external HD to retrieve my photos & files from the computer buit what about my Windows Mail? I had 200-300 emails on it (and no, I didn't save a copy on the server 'cause I didn't know better). Do I understand correctly that there is no way for me to forward them into Windows Mail on my new computer?

I am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

I need to get a new external HDD for my laptop and I'm thinking of = getting an eSATA drive. My question is this: Can any HDD be turned into = an eSATA drive by housing it an enclosure which has an eSATA port or is = there something special about SATA drives? I'm not sure whether I should = buy an already enclosed SATA or buy the HDD and the enclosure separately = (cheaper option).

A few days back I had posted about an eSATA data drive I had been using with XP not being readable with Vista or Win7. I removed the drive from the enclosure and tried another SATA drive. (both drives are made by Western Digital). the second drive was removed from a Win2k machine when it started developing bad clusters. Vista and Win7 could read that with no problem. so at least I now know the problem is not due to the enclosure itself
Also can conclude that the problem has nothing to do with Win7 not being able to read older versions of NTFS. (Reads a win2k drive with no problems) and for any who had missed the previous post:
Win7 and Vista can run CHKDSK on the drive and read it find
....and find *no* problems
but disc management sees the drive as "RAW"
trying to read the drive from Windows Explorer gives me the error message that the drive is not formatted or the file system is corrupt

I have a HP desktop running Vista premium. I "had" an Emachine that ran XP, but it died. (I think the power supply went out) Whatever the case I am not going to get the XP computer fixed, but I do want some files off the old harddrive out of it. How do I do that? I'm hearing of a USB adapter of some sort that will do it...is that true? I went on Ebay, saw some USB's but am not sure they will do what I need for them to do.
