I am transfering files and settings from a 32 bit Vista Home Premium PC to a 64 bit Vista Home Premium PC, does create any problem? Also, are the files on the Old machine deleted or do they remain intact.
View 6 RepliesI try to retrieve my mail, but Windows Mail remains in Offline Mode, and when I use the connection in the box, (the same one I am connecting to), it will disconnect me from the internet, and then give me an error stating that I canceled the retrieval. If I choose not to select a connection, it tells me also that I canceled the retrieval.
I have set IE to its defaults, and not to dial a connection, as well as Windows Mail is also set not to dial a connection, but it tries to dial anyway, as well as remain in OFFLINE MODE. HELP, I would like to retrieve my email some day.
I am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to transfer files from my old computer hard drive using an usb 2.0 enclosure. My new computer is running Vista, the old hard drive is running xp. When I plugged it in, my computer sees it as a mass storage device, but I cannot access nor see any files on the old hard drive. I'm getting kinda frustrated, I tried to link the two computers via ethernet that didn't work. My old computer has motherboard issues and the usb ports don't work. And it will not burn dvds it errors out, so I couldn't transfer my info that way. Am I doing something wrong here? Can someone give me some advise?

Both users are set to administrator with no password required. What I want is permission to transfer files or folders between the C drives of both machines.
I get as far as seeing these drives when I click on the computer's network location but then cannot gain access to the drive itself. I feel as if I'm close. I've trying playing with the permissions on both C drives and it looks like I've set everything I can.
When I use Windows Easy Transfer am I removing the files from the old computer and putting them on the new one? Or am I just copying the files on the old and putting new copies on the new computer?

I was under the impression that the necessary software for the transfer and Synchronization was in Vista Windows, but having connected the computers with a transfer cable (which was installed as new hardware on both computers) nothing further happened although I was supposed to get instructions on the Standby computer how to proceed with the transfers.

I have not shared any folders. I am wondering if they can hack through Vista file sharing, to access folders that aren't even shared. If so, how long would it take them to hack in if they wanted to? I installed Vista Ultimate 32bit on a 2nd partition and tried using Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files and settings from the 64bit installation and pick them up in the 32bit installaion. This is the error I get every time I try to complete the transfer: "The store you selected was saved on a 64bit machine. Windows Easy Transfer cannot apply the data." Is there a way to use WET to transfer files from a Vista-64bit installation? If not WET, is there another utility?
View 8 Replies View RelatedLast week I upgraded a HPxw4400X workstation from WinXP Pro w/SP3 to Vista Business. I did a full backup and also used FAST (files and settings transfer wizard). However, I soon found out that the DVD drive was "broke". HP told me it was because of the upgrade. They said to do a fresh install. Did another backup, fresh install, then a restore. Had lots of problems with BSOD, but a selective restore got it working again. But he can't see MS Office, nor navigate to it. I can see it when logged in as an admin. I thought of copying files and folders between profiles (he has 3 of 'em - , ., and ..000). The former is the oldest so I thought I could copy the App Data and User Data over it'd work (in both Documents and Settings, and Users), but it didn't work. I've been here working on various issues for 28 hours, so I'm not thinking as clearly as I'd like.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded to a new pc with vista and windows mail from Xp & outlook express (with virgin). To save my files and emails etc I used windows easy transfer software and copied the files to an external hard drive and then loaded it to the new PC. I initially had problems as my modem didn't install but virgin sent me a wireless connector and all seemed OK. However, when I click on send/receive mail I get an error message 'some errors occured while processing the requsted tasks - please see details below.' But there are no details! I have 3 email addresses.
If I click on the little arrow next to send/rec and then click on each email separately there is no problem. Equally, if I click on 'receive all' there is no problem. When I click on send/rec the first time I open windows mail there is no problem, but thereafter always the error message. I've had Virgin remotely controlling the pc for 90 minutes and they can't suss it!
Also, bizarrely at the top of the page it says inbox - outlook express provided by virgin net even though I appear to be running windows mail (it certainly isn't the usual outlook I have on my old pc). Did I inadvertently load outlook as well as my emails on top of windows mail and they've kind of merged?
I'm running Vista Home Premium on a 2 month old HP. There are 3 harddrives --- the original one from HP, the old one from my old computer(both internal), and a drive that is external, connected via USB, thatI use to hold my backup disk image files.For a few weeks, no problem. Lately, every time I double click on theexternal drive in Windows Explorer, Windows Easy Transfer startsrunning. If I right-click instead and then click on "Open", there'sno problem (Easy Transfer does not open). Any ideas on how to stop this unwanted loading of Easy Transfer?

I decided to use Windows Easy Transfer and for the most part it was easy except for Outlook. It seems to have replaced my existing Outlook 2003 OST files with those from my old pc (also Outlook 2003) - does this mean that I have lost the last 3 months of emails or is the file I am missing been transferred somewhere that I can't see anymore. When I try to access local settings the UAC tells me that I don't have permission?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have gone back to Vista after using Win 7. I used Windows Easy Transfer (WET)and loaded up an external drive. I found that Vista SP2 seems to have a slightly different WET gui and have not been able to xfer any data at all. I can get to the point of selecting path and password but then cannot get a path that the Vista version of WET will recongnize even though it shows up and can be selected the WET that is on the external drive. Went back to Vista to get ready for the release of the retail version of 7 and did not want to mess with the RC and eventual clean install next year.

In one of their few areas of consistency, both said I needed to install WET on the old XP computer, which I did by downloading form the MS website. On my first attempt, my new computer said the files created on my portable hard disk by my old computer running WET could not be read. They had be copied as read only and could not be read evenafter I changed that attribute. On my second attempt, WET on my new computer told me that the DAT files created by the old one were created by an earlier WET version and could not be transferred. But I installed WET AFTER I bought the new computer from the allegedly up-to-date MS website.

I am trying to do this over our network (SBS2003 if that's relevant). Windows Easy Transfer seems to be working fine to a point, but then it gets stuck on a particular file (on the XP machine) and doesn't continue. A flashing icon appears near the top right, but there are no options to skip a file or anything like that. I have tried deleting what I believed was the offending file, only to have WET stop on a different file. If there was a way to skip a problem file, that would be great, but the only time I see a prompt suggesting that I can do that is after I have already cancelled the transfer (on the XP machine).

Before uninstalling Office 2003 I stored some Outlook pst-files (e-mail, contacts and archive files). How can I import these files into Windows Mail/Contacts on my new laptop (Windows Vista/MS Office 2007 H&S). I tried Windows Easy Transfer, but it didn't work.
2. How can I import Mozilla Thunderbird files (e-mail, contacts) from the old laptop into Windows Mail/Contacts on the new one? The wizzard does not give the opportunity to select Thunderbird files.
If I decide to upgrade to Win 7 and do a clean install, could I use Easy File Transfer to retain my Outlook, Web Settings and Files? I am advised by Belkin that their Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista is not 100% reliable for this purpose and they do not have a cable or software to do this job.
