Did A Restore Full Backup And Also Used FAST (files And Settings Transfer Wizard)
Feb 11, 2009
Last week I upgraded a HPxw4400X workstation from WinXP Pro w/SP3 to Vista Business. I did a full backup and also used FAST (files and settings transfer wizard). However, I soon found out that the DVD drive was "broke". HP told me it was because of the upgrade. They said to do a fresh install. Did another backup, fresh install, then a restore. Had lots of problems with BSOD, but a selective restore got it working again. But he can't see MS Office, nor navigate to it. I can see it when logged in as an admin. I thought of copying files and folders between profiles (he has 3 of 'em - , ., and ..000). The former is the oldest so I thought I could copy the App Data and User Data over it'd work (in both Documents and Settings, and Users), but it didn't work. I've been here working on various issues for 28 hours, so I'm not thinking as clearly as I'd like.

ON SUNDAY MARCH 2ND I DECIDED TO REINSTALL VISTA HOME PREMIUM BECAUSE ICOULDN'T GET WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER TO WORK. AFTERWARDS, WHEN I PLUGGED INMY SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE AND TRIED TO USE THE BACKUP WIZARD I SAW THIS MESSAGE: -"THE DISK CONTAINING THE
BACKUP IS NOT ACCESSIBLE. PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS TURNED ON AND CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER." -I PANICKED AT FIRST BECAUSE I THOUGHT THIS MEANT THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE FILES ON MY SEAGATE, BUT I REMEMBERED THAT I COULD GO THE LONG WAY BY GOING THROUGH WINDOWS EXPLORER AND CLICKING ON FOLDER AFTER FOLDER AFTER FOLDER, ETC. I WOULD
RATHER NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, ESPECIALLY SINCE ALL I'M LOOKING FOR IS JUST-ONE -FOLDER!

I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data. My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives). query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.
I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily). I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list. Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Two of the biggest criticisms of WSR, Windows Speech Recognition built into the Vista and soon to be released Windows 7 operating system were:
1. No easy method to transfer, backup and restore one's user training profile.
2. No way to keyboard corrections into the Alternates Panel, the corrections box of alternate choices for words that were misrecognized.
We're now pleased to announce the WSR team at Microsoft has released an easy to use transfer, backup and restore tool. Rob Chambers of Microsoft's Speech team suggests: "Be sure to download the release notes as they contain useful information as well as user instructions. Please note that this is a "technical preview" version and as such there are a few known issues with the tool."

I want to use 'Windows Easy Transfer' wizard to transfer solely emails and contacts from XP OE6 to Vista Home.
a) Can I pick this alone, with the wizard ?
b) If Yes, How ? -- I don't find a choice to transfer only emails and address book.
c) If No, what is the alternative ?

I used the "Backup" component (Start>Accessories>System Tools>Backup Status and Configuration) of Vista Basic to backup my hard drive to an external drive in case I had a faliure on my HDD. Well, I had to restore the factory settings on my machine and now I want to restore the files I backed up. My external HDD is FAT32 and the system is telling me it can't use a target that isn't formatted NTFS. I have files that will be impossible to replace in this backup copy on my external drive but I don't know how to get to them. Does anyone have a work around for this?

Recently I have run some registry programs like RegCure, Registry Mechanic, CCleaner, etc and I'm not sure if it affects my system.
1) Most of my programs in the Start menu are missing. Below are some of the examples:
a) Under "Accessories", I can only see Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard, Command Prompt and Run.
b) Under "Games", I can only see Game Explorer
c) Many programs shortcut like Window Defender, etc are missing.
d) I still do not know what else are missing.
2) Windows take some time to shut down and startup and also running of programs...........

I've been using an administrator account for all my daily computing needs. I understand that this is a bad idea so I created another account, standard account, to use. Is there a way to transfer all my settings and program shortcuts etc to this new account or does everything have to be done individually. If this is the case then it's way too much fooling around for my liking and I'll stick with the administrator account.

I have a dual boot system with W7 on a second HDD. I am trying to make a full PC Backup without backing up my W7 disk (because it fails the backup). The second HDD is checked in the backup settings screen, but greyed out, so I cannot uncheck it. It is not checked for file backup.
How do I exclude this disk from the Full PC Backup?

I am trying to figure out what to do when my backup location can no longer accept new backups because it is full. I tried to do a search but the "full" just brings up references to the Full Backup you can do with Windows Vista Ultimate. Any one know where I could find out best practices for doing backups. For example, do I reformat the drive my backup is on so I can do another backup? Or do I buy a bigger drive, and continue doing this as the months go by? Do I swap for another drive to continue doing my backups, and just keep buying more drives as they get filled? Do I hope that Moore's Law also applies to hard drive storage?

I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. I am aware that just upgrading XP Pro to Vista will be very time consuming (took well over 3 hours when I went from my original XP pro to the first release about a year ago and lots of stuff was messed up and I ended up reformatting and starting again with a clean install). This is my conceptual plan:
* This time I want to back up my settings with the "file & settings transfer
wizard" on the XP box to one of my server shares.
* Back up all my important document stuff to the server.
* Then I will format everything on my PC and clean install Vista Ultimate.
* Finally restore my settings back from the server using the Vista FSTW
Presumably the Vista FSTW equivalent can read the XP versions files, or
should I expect troubles trying to do this?

I have Vista Ultimate installed on one of three HD partitions of my laptop. I want to merge the partitions into 1 partition.
For this purpose, I will use the Complete PC Backup utility, delete the existing partitions, create a single partition, and restore the computer image created earlier.
Would this be the correct procedure, or the utility is going to recreate the three partitions and my work would be useless?

I keep getting this little bubble saying my recovery D is full. I deleted a ton of files and put all of my pictures on flashdrives but that was a waste of time, it didn't help. My C drive says 218GB free of 288GB and D says 12.7MB free of 9.99GB Any idea how to fix this?

As SP1 looms, it's probably time to go back to Vista after I tried it when on the Beta and RC releases and had a few problems with compatibility with other bits of kit. I would like to *manually* save different versions of Complete PC Backup, but Vista won't give me that option and will only save incremental backups. As someone noticed here on the forums, "using the *scheduled* backup is the only way to get the checkbox to create full backups, each and every time you want one". However, scheduled backups is not what I want to do, as I'm losing control of the exact PC versions. Can I rename the earlier backup to something else (eg. "WindowsImageBackup1"), so Vista would create a new folder "WindowsImageBackup" and save a new full backup into it? If yes, when I rename the folder from "WindowsImageBackup1" back to "WindowsImageBackup" in order to restore the earlier version of PC, will
it get corrupted or confuse Vista?

I have a 250 gig backup drive which is now full and my weekly backup is failing. the drive I am backing up shows only 133 gig used in properties why has the back up exceeded the total disk usage i am backing up. The file structure on backupo drive shows only one backup set dated 2007-08-04 within which are the weekly folders for my backups each of which contains a varying number of zip files. I am reluctant to just delete and start over but cannot see a way of managing backed up data.

I had previously begun a full system backup and several of those disks were damaged. I would like to now just backup documents, pictures, music and e-mails. The backup utility will only give me two choices. 1) a full system backup or 2) a backup of the files mentioned above since the previous backup. How do I just get a complete backup of my documents, pictures, etc?

My subject on this posting may be misleading. I am actually looking for a reliable full backup solution so that I can perform the upgrade with some confidence that I won't lose everything. Vista Home Premium (also Home Basic) does not include Complete PC Backup. (It was a surprise to me too!) I need a full/complete backup solution. Otherwise, the restore task is piecemeal... and very cumbersome to do and contemplate.
Should I purchase backup software? Disk imaging software? Recommendations? I purchased a sizeable disk drive and can connect it with usb. Does the Windows 7 upgrade have any options to perform the needed backup? Not likely I imagine.
Does Windows 7 Home Premium have the same defect of no Complete PC Backup or equivalent Yeah, I think it's a bad defect! This must be the first OS without a full backup solution! Or am I missing something?

I have a WD MyBook 1TB external hard drive. It's a replacement for a LaCie drive that I broke accidentally. Because I broke my LaCie, which held all my backups, I need to do a full system backup so I have one on file. (I'm running Windows Vista Business SP1 on a Compaq Presario laptop. I've tried this both before and after SP1 and have got the same result.)
The weekly file-only backups I have scheduled with Windows Backup work fine. It's only the full system backup that gives me problems. Everything goes as planned: I select the MyBook as the destination, and Windows starts the backup. Once it gets near the end (I'd say about 90% done according to the status bar), I get the blue crash screen. Here's what it says: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0X000000D1 (0X00000004, 0X00000002, 0X00000001, 0C807503FF)nvstor.sys - Address 807503FF base at 8074C000, DateStamp 458d543d It doesn't restart after that, it just sticks on the blue screen. I have to shut the computer off and then turn it back on to do anything. Can anyone clue me in on what might be going on? I thought maybe my driver was out of date, but Windows Update can't find a newer one, neither can it when I go into the device's properties. Unless I'm missing something there, or it's something other than a driver issue.

I figured I'm gonna have many questions so I signed up. Here's my first one. I just purchased Uniblue's Registry Booster 2009. I ran a registry scan, and my system has over 300 errors. I'm trying to clean it but this application says "Your system settings prohibit you from doing a registry backup" when I click the "Clean registry button." How do I change those settings? Can someone give me detailed instructions on how to adjust system settings to enable registry backups?

Re: Vista Ultimate 64x SP2 I searched & failed to find a .docx file I had created & saved the prior 24 hours. My search found that a shortcut for the file still existed. I opened restore to find either a shadow or other backup copy. I got a Vista popup message notifying: "This machine has been restored from a Complete PC Backup..... some file backups might not be available . . you can still restore them in Advanced Restore by . . .etc."
Previously -I had never had the extreme displeasure of reading such a Vista notice - and I had performed only one complete PC restore several months ago. I, fortunately, did find the missing file using Vista restore. However, I was unable to find any log or record of any prior complete PC restores in order to reassure myself that the latter described Vista popup message was not referring to a recent Complete PC Restore that I certainly did not intentionally or consciously execute.
I am left with troubling questions: What other files, if any, are missing that I am not aware of? How can I compare my system with backups to find/verify the presence or absence of possible missing files? Is it possible for a user to trigger a Complete PC Restore without being aware of the event? Is there a Vista log or record that lists the dates of Complete PC Backups? (I found nothing using Vista 'Help and Support') What are the common mistakes an experienced user can make (excluding the execution of a specific file deletion) that will result in unintended file deletions?

When I tried to make a backup I've got an error message saying:
Backup failed
0*80070017 cyclic redundancy control failed
I've searched the net for that code and they suggested chkdsk, I've done that and ran sfc/scannow with elevated privileges. Sfc did correct some problems but there is one problem he could not repair. I've looked at the log in c:windowslogscbs and searched with the tag [SR] to narrow down, and there was a problem that occured several times.
Windows SIdebar settings.ini is corrupt or missing (64-32bit program files) and when sfc tries to look for backup of the source file it also stated that this one is corrupted. So I was wondering I've someone knows a method to correct this? Maybe if there is a way to reinstall the sidebar my problem could be solved (?) I can't use System restore because I recently deleted those checkpoints, because of an space lack on that partition.
