Explorer.exe Crashes And Reboots

Mar 23, 2008

I accidentally downloade Virtumonde last night and have ran McAfee virus scan enterprise and Spybot and both have gotten rid of the trojan and spyware. At least that's what they tell me. Now spybot tells me that there are registry changes happening from time to time and anytime I try to start the control panel or My Computer, explorer.exe crashes and reboots. I'm about ready to just re-install Vista and go back to factory settings and start all over again.

Explorer Crashes Constantly

Sep 24, 2009

Recently, it seems, a lot of vista machines are experiencing explorer crashes. Mostly mine are from ntdll.dll but they are all split. It also mostly crashes when I move files, open control panel, or right click, the latter being the most significant. I have disabled every programs' context menu to see if it was that and nothing. It still crashed. ShellExView doesn't seem to do any good either. I've been using autoruns from SysInternals. I'm going to upload all the crash information.

Other than that there isnt much else to explain. Usually I'll be working along then boom, explorer is restarting... It even did it to me just from adding a quick launch icon. I have no idea what the cause is. Well here are the crash events in order of occurrence, top being most recent:......

Windows Explorer Crashes

Apr 28, 2008

why shouldn't they feel that way? Windows XP is noticeably faster than Vista on the same hardware, and it gets by with much less RAM and hard drive space. Microsoft's Service Pack 3 makes XP even faster, but the same cannot be said of Vista's Service Pack 1. And Windows Explorer crashes far more often in Vista (preceded, of course, by the notorious Green Ribbon of Death). Why, XP's staggeringly superior hardware support alone makes a convincing case for dumping Vista in favor of its predecessor.

Problem is, downgrading a Vista PC to Windows XP can be a chore, and doubly so if you want to do it without reformatting your hard disk. The main roadblock is Windows Setup, which won't let you install an older version on top of a newer one; you are left with the tedious task of fooling Setup into thinking that there's no Windows at all on your PC.-Next: Regress Without Reformatting >

32bit: Explorer Crashes

Jun 8, 2008

I have been running the 64 bits version of Vista for some days now, but I am facing a lot of problems. A few weeks back, when i was still running the 32bit version of vista, everything ran smooth. I could game, chat on msn, browse with mozilla, and use my favorite code editor programs with no lockups, not freezes and no insane lagspikes / framedrops. A few days ago, I decided to reinstall my computer, because it was cluttered with useless stuff, and it gave me explorer crashes every now and then. I went for the 64bit version of Vista Business. That's where it all started. Running this OS, limits me a lot. I can either update my computer, browse, chat, play WoW, or listen to music, but I cannot do that at the same time, something I could when i was running the 32bit version. I have tried a lot of things. I made WoW run on my 2nd core and my iTunes on the first, I have tried the optimization tool from AMD, I have increased my vid card's memory, all without any success. When I run World of Warcraft, It consumes the whole second core, and around 95% of my RAM. On my 32bit OS, it used only 20% of both cores together, and 55% RAM. My hardware should be able to do this, and it has been done. But for some reason, the x64 OS doesn't seem to do any good.

Right Click Crashes Windows Explorer

Jun 16, 2008

Each time I attempt a right click to access the context menu Windows Explorer crashes. This is true whether I use Explorer or PowerDesk Pro 7 as my file manager. As a result I am unable to zip files, rename files or run executables as the Administrtor. The error message I get is simply that "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I suspected that possibly Norton 360 was the culprit, but I disabled Norton 360 and the problem persists. I believe this problem did not start until I installed Vista's SP1. I am running Vista Home Premium on a powerful MicroExpress machine with ample RAM.

Windows Explorer Hanging And Crashes

Dec 18, 2008

I recently purchased a nice shiny new HP Pavilion DV7-1130US. It came with vista ultimate x64 SP1. I wanted XP but that was not an option. For the first few hours it was very buggy and explorer was hanging alot. After awhile it got better and for about 2 weeks i was really starting to enjoy my lovely new laptop. Well today, for from what I can see no reason whatsoever, my laptop has become unusable. My symptoms are similar to those discussed in this thread: Windows Explorer Crashes I boot up, log in, everything seems ok for the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then explorer freezes and I cant access or use any applications, everything goes into "not responding" mode, and none of my clicks register. Then 2-5 minutes go by and all my clicks happen at once. It seems like explorer restarts once or twice during this too as I get the "ding" sounds.

I have also received some memory errors, and fatal application crashes from various applications. I cant even do anything, I tried to get to system restore in the first 30 seconds after boot up when the computer is usable, but i cant make it and am not sure where system restore is located. I love my new laptop but I am so frustrated right now that I could smash it against the wall. I blame vista, as I am using an old ass XP desktop right now that works absolutely fine, never ever crashes, yet my shiny new fancy HP dual core 4 gigabytes of ram vista x64 bit laptop is ****ing worthless............

Windows Explorer Crashes When Moving Files

Dec 4, 2009

I'm trying to move files by dragging a folder from the right-hand pane in Windows Explorer (Vista Business) to a different folder in the left-hand 'Folders' pane and every time I try this, Explorer stops working and re-starts. If I copy and paste the folders it doesn't seem to cause this problem, although even then, I have to [right click and 'Paste'] twice in the new folder - the first 'Paste' instruction never produces any effect. Should I be able to drag them? Why does 'Paste' require two attempts every time?

Windows Explorer Crashes And Immediately Starts Up

May 16, 2008

I have just reformatted my computer and had a clean install of Vista business and service Pack 1. Everything is running perfectly except for one "small" problem. For no reason whatever it seems Windows Explorer crashes and immediately starts up again.. I don't lose any information and everything appears to be normal after the restart except for the fact that my icons go to different places even inspired off "saving the icons".

All my drivers up to date, my BIOS is up-to-date and I can think of no reason why this should be happening. Nothing in particular seems to start it. It will sometimes happen when I click on icons or right click on the file that I want to delete etc

Ultimate 64b No Reboots

Mar 26, 2008

I am going to be putting in a 9800GX2 GPU in aprox 2 weeks(waiting for availability at my fav shop). For now I have an ATI X800 GTO GPU in it. Now all of these items are compatible with Vista(as far as I have found). After 4 installs that would not complete, I finally get to Vista desktop, the automatic update does its thing, reboots, and reboots...etc. I found a hard start from off it boots?!? So I turn off and put in 1 more stick of RAM(now at 4 gigs). Same prob, reboot snags over and over, but a hard start is good. I have a TON of components to install and hard start is not going to cut it.

Spontaneous Reboots In Ultimate

Mar 1, 2009

I built a new box and installed Vista Ultimate a couple of years ago, which has begun to occasionally reboot in a spontaneous and random manner. I don't recall exactly when this began, but the first time it happened was at least 6 months ago. And it's not often; maybe averaging once every 3-4 weeks. It has nothing to do with how long the PC has been on: sometimes I've been on it for hours; but the last time it occurred, I had only turned the PC on 20 minutes earlier. It has nothing to do with what application I'm using at the time: browser, email client, other. And when it crashes, first the monitor screen goes dark with lots of multi-colored squiggly lines, and then my PC cleanly reboots. Aside from the unwanted interruption and any newly input data lost, everything always seems fine thereafter. Does anyone else have similar problems with Vista crashing on them? Or does this sound more like a problem with my video card?

Close The Lid The System Reboots

Jan 29, 2009

About a week ago a strange new problem started. I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home and dual core processor. Lately on SOME occasions the computer reboots itself when I close the lid. It does not do it every time and will shut down fine every time normally. But on some shut downs, when I close the lid the system reboots. It might do this a couple of times in a row and it might not do it for 3 or 4 shut downs. I use the shut down from the start menu. I have changed all of the setting for power settings and what to do when the lid is shut to either never or do nothing and it does not affect it. This computer is only about 4 months old. I have done a restore point before this started but no help.

Reboots Without Warning While Surfing

I've had several avenues of support from Dell's "experts" from India. None has solved the issue so far. If I run a Video card stress test, then go on a website and surf, the system will cold reboot in less than 10-20 seconds. The CPU does not seem to go over 60c, and the memory does not seem to run out of resources. Currently, if I surf for about 30 minutes or so, I will get a reboot. I have reinstalled Vista with SP1 and all updates.

System Shutsdown And Reboots Automatically

Nov 22, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium x32 with SP2 installed running on an Intel motherboard Core2 Quad with 3GB memory and a nvida 8800GT video board and a 400 Watt p/s, 500GB drive with plenty of free space. My system fan speeds up to full speed and then re-boots. The only warning I get is the fan noise. This happens 5 or 6 times then it won't happen again for a couple days. It seems to happen exactly 1 hour from the last time it rebooted.... no kidding, within a couple seconds of 60 minutes.

Anyway, I thought I would check the event logs for a clue. I noticed that the Shutdown Event Tracker was not available so I looked for a way to turn it on. Vista, at least my version, does not have the gpedit.msc (Group policy console editor?) and other articles indicated that is what I needed to activate the Tracker.

The only thing I can find in the other logs is a recurring entry: "The DgiVecp service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the device specified." how to enable the Shutdown Event Tracker?
