When I try to use explore (right click on the Start button) and drop and drag pictures from an external drive to my picture folders, the window closes, fails, and refreshes back tot he desktop. It use to work fine but for the last few months it fails. I like to choose several pictures on an external drive and simply move them to my hard drive. Can someone help or suggest a quick alternative. Thanks.

This drive plugs in and works fine from XP on two different computers but it crashes my Vista machine every time. It also crashes in Safe-Mode. Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 I have removed all data from the drive on the XP machine and formatted the drive replaced data and tried again without success. Format was done in a CMD prompt. I am not sure what else to try, posting here because it works fine in XP so assume its a Vista thing.
I am experiencing the same problem as listed in other posts on this topic, but with a twist that is keeping me from resolving the problem. I have a 160gb WD USB external drive of my brother's that I'm trying to save for him, and we're experiencing all of the same symptoms as the other posts on this topic. The drive is automatically recognized when plugged in, drivers auto install, windows correctly identifies the drive and gives full drive name, device manager says it is there and operating properly etc etc, but the drive is not listed in windows explorer as others report. When I try to change the drive letter in disk management as the many other posts suggest, changing the name is not an option for this drive. My only options for the afflicted drive are "New simple volume", "New spanned volume" and "New striped volume" and of course properties. Here are a list of fixes I have tried without success.
1. Tried different USB ports and different USB cable.
2. Tried 4 different machines running Vista Ultimate SP1 (Desktop Core i7 6gb RAM), Vista Basic (Desktop Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM), Vista Home Premium SP1 (Laptop Core 2 Duo 2gb RAM) and XP Home SP3 (Laptop Celeron 512gb RAM)
3. Stopped device with "safely remove hardware", uninstalled through device manager, rebooted with device connected.............
I keep having desktop crashes where the desktop disappears because windows explorer or word crashes leaving me with the only option to reboot how do I solve this

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem sometimes when i made a right click on random items on my computer, because while vista tries to display the right click menu an error appears saying that EXplorer has enconter a problem and must be restarted.
Sometimes does this, and sometimes not, but always when i right click an item.
Recently, it seems, a lot of vista machines are experiencing explorer crashes. Mostly mine are from ntdll.dll but they are all split. It also mostly crashes when I move files, open control panel, or right click, the latter being the most significant. I have disabled every programs' context menu to see if it was that and nothing. It still crashed. ShellExView doesn't seem to do any good either. I've been using autoruns from SysInternals. I'm going to upload all the crash information.
Other than that there isnt much else to explain. Usually I'll be working along then boom, explorer is restarting... It even did it to me just from adding a quick launch icon. I have no idea what the cause is. Well here are the crash events in order of occurrence, top being most recent:......
why shouldn't they feel that way? Windows XP is noticeably faster than Vista on the same hardware, and it gets by with much less RAM and hard drive space. Microsoft's Service Pack 3 makes XP even faster, but the same cannot be said of Vista's Service Pack 1. And Windows Explorer crashes far more often in Vista (preceded, of course, by the notorious Green Ribbon of Death). Why, XP's staggeringly superior hardware support alone makes a convincing case for dumping Vista in favor of its predecessor.
Problem is, downgrading a Vista PC to Windows XP can be a chore, and doubly so if you want to do it without reformatting your hard disk. I accidentally downloade Virtumonde last night and have ran McAfee virus scan enterprise and Spybot and both have gotten rid of the trojan and spyware. At least that's what they tell me. Now spybot tells me that there are registry changes happening from time to time and anytime I try to start the control panel or My Computer, explorer.exe crashes and reboots. I'm about ready to just re-install Vista and go back to factory settings and start all over again.

A few weeks back, when i was still running the 32bit version of vista, everything ran smooth. I could game, chat on msn, browse with mozilla, and use my favorite code editor programs with no lockups, not freezes and no insane lagspikes / framedrops. A few days ago, I decided to reinstall my computer, because it was cluttered with useless stuff, and it gave me explorer crashes every now and then. I went for the 64bit version of Vista Business. That's where it all started. Running this OS, limits me a lot. I can either update my computer, browse, chat, play WoW, or listen to music, but I cannot do that at the same time, something I could when i was running the 32bit version. I have tried a lot of things. I made WoW run on my 2nd core and my iTunes on the first, I have tried the optimization tool from AMD, I have increased my vid card's memory, all without any success. When I run World of Warcraft, It consumes the whole second core, and around 95% of my RAM. On my 32bit OS, it used only 20% of both cores together, and 55% RAM. My hardware should be able to do this, and it has been done. But for some reason, the x64 OS doesn't seem to do any good.

As a result I am unable to zip files, rename files or run executables as the Administrtor. The error message I get is simply that "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I suspected that possibly Norton 360 was the culprit, but I disabled Norton 360 and the problem persists. I believe this problem did not start until I installed Vista's SP1. I am running Vista Home Premium on a powerful MicroExpress machine with ample RAM.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a nice shiny new HP Pavilion DV7-1130US. It came with vista ultimate x64 SP1. I wanted XP but that was not an option. For the first few hours it was very buggy and explorer was hanging alot. After awhile it got better and for about 2 weeks i was really starting to enjoy my lovely new laptop. Well today, for from what I can see no reason whatsoever, my laptop has become unusable. My symptoms are similar to those discussed in this thread: Windows Explorer Crashes I boot up, log in, everything seems ok for the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then explorer freezes and I cant access or use any applications, everything goes into "not responding" mode, and none of my clicks register. Then 2-5 minutes go by and all my clicks happen at once. It seems like explorer restarts once or twice during this too as I get the "ding" sounds.
I have also received some memory errors, and fatal application crashes from various applications. I cant even do anything, I tried to get to system restore in the first 30 seconds after boot up when the computer is usable, but i cant make it and am not sure where system restore is located. I love my new laptop but I am so frustrated right now that I could smash it against the wall. I blame vista, as I am using an old ass XP desktop right now that works absolutely fine, never ever crashes, yet my shiny new fancy HP dual core 4 gigabytes of ram vista x64 bit laptop is ****ing worthless............
I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......
I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to move files by dragging a folder from the right-hand pane in Windows Explorer (Vista Business) to a different folder in the left-hand 'Folders' pane and every time I try this, Explorer stops working and re-starts. If I copy and paste the folders it doesn't seem to cause this problem, although even then, I have to [right click and 'Paste'] twice in the new folder - the first 'Paste' instruction never produces any effect. Should I be able to drag them? Why does 'Paste' require two attempts every time?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just reformatted my computer and had a clean install of Vista business and service Pack 1. Everything is running perfectly except for one "small" problem. For no reason whatever it seems Windows Explorer crashes and immediately starts up again.. I don't lose any information and everything appears to be normal after the restart except for the fact that my icons go to different places even inspired off "saving the icons".
All my drivers up to date, my BIOS is up-to-date and I can think of no reason why this should be happening. Nothing in particular seems to start it. It will sometimes happen when I click on icons or right click on the file that I want to delete etc
You try to copy a folder. It says, not necessarily at the beginning, "Do you want to merge these folders?" It should check for mergeable folders at the start of the transfer. About five minutes later, when it comes to a duplicate file, it says "Do you want to replace $File1 with $File2?" Again, it should check for ALL of these criteria before moving/copying anything, right at the beginning. I usually copy a multi-GB folder and leave for a while after clicking "Yes to all" on a prompt. I come back later to find that my files have not yet copied and there is yet another prompt. In conclusion, when I move a file, it will make the "done" sound, but then wait at the end of the loading bar for a few seconds. MS, please hear my cries and fix this. It said the backup was successful but when I went to safely remove hardware, I got this message: " Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. "I made sure everything was closed, checked with Task Manager and tried again. Same message. After 20 minutes, I finally just disconnected it.

I receive an error message that says, "The update does not apply to your system." But my system is a 32 bit version of Vista. View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed the Beta 2 and am having a weird issue. When I 1st booted, I got a BSOD at the stage where the small gray bar is showing to be loading. The system rebooted before I could read the error. I was able to boot into safe mode. I installed all the missing drivers and rebooted. Once again, the system restarted itself at the loading Windows stage. This time no blue screen.
I disconnected my IDE drive which is on the Primary IDE 0 channel and kept my 400GB SATA drive which has the OS on it. Please note this is not a multi-boot, I only have Vista on the drive. Without the IDE drive present, the system booted into Vista perfectly. I've been running two days with no errors or crashes. But as soon as I reconnect the IDE drive, the system wont boot into Vista normally
I tried all I can think of and searched Google and other vista forums high and low. Any ideas for a solution. If I cant figure anything out, I may have to buy an IDE to SATA adapter and connect it to one of the empty SATA ports
I have Windows XP and Vista. I always go through "safely remove hardware" before pulling off USB drive on XP. However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a western digital 1TB hard drive which I had to reformat before I could use. Everything works good now, except for onething. Sometimes the computer doesn't want to restart while the new drive is plugged in. If I remove it from the USB port prior to restarting, it will restart just fine.
It shuts down and turns on without an issue. This only happens when I
restart the system with it plugged in.
So while it's not a big issue,it is an annoyance.
