View 5 Repliesi upgraded from XP pro to vista and i cannot seem to get medial player to play DVD files like it did in XP. What i did, i left XP installed on a 40GB "C"drive and installed vista "clean" on a 300GB "d" drive, hoping i could import a few inportant files and bookmarked internet sites later. Is there any way to find the codec from XP and install it into media player in vista?

For a couple of weeks now, I noticed that in WM11 for Windows Vista, I cannot get the radio station streams to play. Example:
WM11 | Media Guide | Internet Radio | New Age | Show All |
Whisperings: Solo Piano | "Play".
Normally, the stream would start at this stage. It no longer does so. My first thought was to reinstall WM11. However, I cannot find it anywhere. The MS site refers to the XP version and WM11 doesn't appear in the Control Panel | Programs & Features section. My system: Windows Business x32 SP1 & IE 8 RC1
I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...
I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...
All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".
It appears that Windows Media Player that comes with Vista Enterprise does not include the ability to play DVDs. When I try it says that no codec is installed. what I need to download, preferably for free, to either get WMP to play DVDs, or a free player that's not too obnoxious with ads. I tried installing the K-Lite Standard Codec pack, but either I did it wrong or it isn't enough.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been lurking in this and other MS groups for some time hoping to find the answer to my problem, but so far, nothing has worked. Using Vista64 with 4g ram, with latest version of Windows Mail. McAfee Security Center. Latest versions of Windows Media Player and Real Player. Have scanned and found no virus or spyware (using McAfee). Problem: Often, but not always, attached .wmv files received in email will start in Windows Media Player, or in Real Player if I chose that one. In both programs the .wmv file will start with audio and video. About 1/4 into the movie, it stops playing completely. Screen goes black with a message imposed "Play Again>". No other error message.
This has been going on for a few months and it _seems_ like it was around the time that comcast changed its email program. I did notice that wmv's coming from comcast emailers would almost always behave as described, but now I notice that it also comes (seldom) from other ISPs. I have tried saving the files in a folder and then opening them by double clicking them in Explorer, but it makes no difference. I've also tried opening them directly from WMP with same results. I've updated my video driver (Nvidea), still no joy. I have been able to google the various .wav files and download and play them completely but of course I'm not sure where the emailed file originated online.
I got the following message when playing DVDs on Vista home premium with Windows Media Player. The same problem happens to media center. Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card. I can play those DVDs on PowerDVD or VLC player. I installed K-Lite codec. It still doesn't work. It looks like it is not codec problem.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi can't get media player to play dvd's it tells me to ''lower my resolution'' which is set at 1680 x 1050. i do this and nothing i take the resolution all the way to 800x600 and nothing gives me the same message so i surmized that their was another problem. I recently just upgraded my motherboard and ram and ended up having to rebuy vista as my computer was previously factory built.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI know this topic has been covered on the forum, as I've read about problems others are having. I cannot play any avi files in Media Player 11 or Picasa. I have downloaded codecs up the ying-yang and nothing has worked... xvid, divx and a few other bundles reported to work... I can see the video, but no audio. I downloaded Media Player Classic and that works fine, but I would really like to be able to use Media Player 11 and Picasa as well.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi use vista 64-bit and the media player that came with it plus a codec package from windows. for the past 2 years i have been very happy with it with no problems what so ever. however now, without downloading any patches, my media player has decided it won't play certain videos. i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust reinstalled Vista (32) Untimate. Was haveing trouble installing SP1 and needed to get rid of a lot of junk so did a complete new install. Now WMP 11 will not play. Get a msg that says the following "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Get this msg when trying to play MP3, WMA and WMV's. Worked fine before reinstall. I tried ripping a track and it worked fine but after ripping would not play the file - rip both to MP3 and WMA. Downloaded Winamp and it works fine and plays all the files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to play video or audio files on Media Center through the TV via HDMI, the video and audio is very laggy. It also sounds sort of static like. When I play CD's or DVD's the problem is resolved. Also, when I unplug the HDMI, the problem is resolved. Also, when I minimize Media Center, the problem is resolved. It only happens when the HDMI is plugged in and Media Center is Maximized. I have searched all over and have not been able to find a solution to this problem. I have tried changing the HDMI cords and changing the HDMI input on the TV. I've also tried to use a different TV and no luck.
View 6 Replies View Relatedlately my Media Player stopped playing DivX/XVid files. Prior to that I've installed PowerDVD in order to play a VOB file on my Vista machine. I think it is since then that the Media Player stopped functioning properly. Now I can play WMV/MP3 etc but not AVI. I've removed PowerDVD now; reinstalled DivX pack; reinstalled XVid codecs. Still no use.

We have a security camera that takes a short video when motion activated. The file is then emailed to the tech guys. I cannot view the video. It opens Windows Media player and then just sits there with a blank screen. I can use XP and the file plays just fine, just not on my Ultimate computer.
First of all I'm on vista home basic, second of all wmp was already installed on my pc when I received it. Lastly, it's always had this problem When I click on a mp3/avi/any wmp associated file it will launch the file audio, I can hear it BUT wmp doesn't open, I have to manually launch wmp before I can stop the file or do anything else.
I googled the problem many times and tried solutions but never got anywhere. I reset the assiociated files, I've checked for updates , I've run out of ideas. I was even going to unistall and reinstall it. Yet I can't seem to get a vista version from the microsoft webpage ?! So I don't want to uninstall it and loose it, or even try using wmp 10
instead, I'm worried it will mess up my machines default settings and/or media center!
I know there are some other threads about this problem but i can't post a reply there. I have a problem with wmp 11. It was working ok, but one day it stopped opening. Even if I double click it or if i try to open a mp3 file, it won't load.I tried to delete the registries,as i found somewhere on the net, but nothing happened. Any solution found?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have vista basic and windows media player(v11) is slow as crap. after the window appears it'll take about 20 seconds to load the media that's available(just to get it to a point where it'll respond. then after I select something it lags for about 10-20 seconds and then a 'media changing...' message appears at the bottom left and it'll be about 20 seconds to play that file. so from start to wmp playing something takes up to a minute. wmp11 on my xp puter(512mb hyperthreaded) blows wmp11 on my vista laptop(gig ram amd 64 x2) out of the water. is there something like some setting or something I can change to make things run faster? I like wmp11 and don't want to dl winamp.

- I have Windows Media Player playing some music in the background
- when I use Internet Explorer (it is my active application) and press ???pause??? button on the keyboard the music pauses ??? everything is ok.
- when I use Word (or any Office application) and press ???pause??? button the music pauses and after a fraction of a second it starts playing again. When I press ???next??? WMP jumps 2 songs forward. I don???t have any software that could affect functioning of extra keys on the keyboard (only IntelliType). Morover I know that other people have similar problem.
