I have had this new HP vista media centre computer for 2 weeks, and can't get Media Centre to play 1/2 the 500 gb worth of movies that my old XP media Centre played without any trouble at all! Some are MPEG-4, others are div-x, some are Dvd format. I have seen others with similar posts in other forums and I have loaded up all the lates codecs (safe one) from Divx, and ffdshow etc... I have to play all my movies with Nero or Media Player, which both have no issues with. I feel like this is a dud, and can't believe that a full hard recovery is worth the trouble.

Like many other users I see on this forum, which I think is great by the way, I am new to the game of Vista and find that i have much to learn. I have a question regarding Graohics cards for someone to answer. I am running an ATI (POwerColor) 4850 and the local company that built the computer for me claims that the ATI Catalyst Control Centre will not run properly with Vista x64 systems. The card itself is running fine, but I began qustioning them on this when I found no control centre installed. The CCC apparently causes the card to crash quite often, so they suggested I only install the driver and not the CCC the next time I update. Makes me a little nervous to install the 8.12 driver now!!

I am running Window Vista Home Premium SP1 and have been unable to start WMC using the remote control, shortcuts or by running the ehshell.exe both normally and as administrator. When I try to start WMC using any of the above it looks like the programme trys to start (blue circle appears for a few seconds) then nothing happens.
The last time I tried to open MCE I recieved the following error message: - C:WINDOWSehomeehshell.exe "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Every few days after restarting the PC an icon appears on the system tray informing me that WMC is downloading guide information from the net for the TV channel listing. When I right click on the icon and select open WMC I get the following error message: - "Unable to start Windows Media Centre"
I have tried setting up a new shortcut, uninstalled and reinstalled SP1 and have installed the latest driver for my video card NVIDIA GeForce 7650 GS driver 7.15.11.7490 and have still been unable to resolve the problem. I have searched the net and Microsoft support and have been unable to find a solution

New to the forum but just installed vista 64 the other night so im sure i'll be here a lot! Now i've been looking a lot into how to play AVI files through the media center, and it seems everyone uses the FFDShow program. So, after installing vista64, drivers, and all updates (except SP1), and configuring the media center I then installed:
-Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package x64 SP1
-FFDShow
-MediaControl 5.4.4x64.......

When I try to play video or audio files on Media Center through the TV via HDMI, the video and audio is very laggy. It also sounds sort of static like. When I play CD's or DVD's the problem is resolved. Also, when I unplug the HDMI, the problem is resolved. Also, when I minimize Media Center, the problem is resolved. It only happens when the HDMI is plugged in and Media Center is Maximized. I have searched all over and have not been able to find a solution to this problem. I have tried changing the HDMI cords and changing the HDMI input on the TV. I've also tried to use a different TV and no luck.

When running media centre and listening to music there an option to run a slideshow. How can i control where it gets it's pictures from? I'm tired of looking at various buttons and banners from assorted software apps, visited websites etc and maps of europe from my tomtom backup. I tried changing the stetting in the Library option to no avail - even with no directories set to watch, it still pulls in picture files from random locations - is there any way of controlling where media centre gets it's pictures from. I have a single directory with all my photos - how can i get it just to use this directory?

I have an 10/100 wired connection through a linksys router to an XBOX 360 and am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. I've had ZERO succuss in playing MCE content - ie MP3s and viewing JPGs - on the XBox.
The Media Center menus on the Xbox are intolerably slow, taking 5-30 seconds to respond. Eventually if I have the patience to wait until the XBOX Media center accesses the files located on the Vista machine it takes upwards of 2 minutes just to load one jpg. When I run the tune network tool in WMC I get a message saying that:
"Your network may not have enough bandwidth for consistent performance on your extender device."
When I view the performance graph in the tool my bandwith barely registers on the graph.
Other things I have tried to no avail:
- turned off all firewalls
- unitstalled anti-virus software
- port forwarded the following ports in the router, TCP2869, TCP10243,
UDP1900, UDP10280 to UDP10284
- played with the flow control settings
- tried selecting all possible "speed & duplex" settings
Support from Microsoft sucks:mad:. The XBox people have pawned me off on the Vista support people. I wouldn't let the Vista support people hand me back to the XBox people...although they tried pretty hard. The Vista support people are saying they need to recreate the problem in their lab and get back to me.

Originally my intention was to go the whole nine yards with WMC, ie, the dual digital TV tuners/PVR thing etc etc. However, I ended up getting a deal on a Sky+ box, so, long story short, I really just use it to play music and movies. I don't have an extensive picture library and so on, so I just get it to watch the Music and Movie directories. All the others have been removed from the watch-list and now I would like these other folders to die with dignity as far as the main interface is concerned. I don't want to have to go up (to Pictures) then across to Videos. I know this may seem as if I would be interested in hiring someone to do my breathing for me, and maybe I won't lose any sleep over it, but I would like to slim down the primary interface if it can be done.

I've used Windows all the way from Windows 95 up to the latest incarnation, none of the previous versions have been so buggy, unreliable or slow as Vista. I have a brand new PC with 2 gigs of ram and Vista is just out of its depth. Start up takes for ever, it often hangs on shut down, Explorer is constantly re starting, media centre is slow and crashes, side bar is constantly crashing, blocked start up programmes keep restarting even though they've been blocked, the latest problem, after a windows update, my Vista ready printer is now incompatible, the printer support know its a problem and they're rushing to update their drivers. Each time Windows updates I lose my optical drive and have to alter the registry, a known problem with half a fix. System restore won't restore, just like the problem they had in ME.
The people I bought the PC from, a big well known company, said yes they know the issues and are as frustrated as it customers. All in all its a disgrace and I feel I have been taken as a mug by Bill Gates, now to add insult to injury Gates is talking about the next new OS with in the next year or two, as things stand now a PC with a Windows OS is just going to b a liability to any one buying one, the future to me looks PC free. For the record I'm not a Linux freak, I've been down that road, its as bad as the rocky Microsoft road.

I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...
I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...
All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

BRING BACK ALL CD FOR COMPUTER , TECH SOME TIMES CANT RESTORE OR REINSTALL HARDWARE IF THE CD IS NOT HERE.BRING BACK THE MEDIA/RECOVERY CDS.RECOVERY MEDIA Most computer systems no longer include "Recovery Media" (Disks or CDs used to restore your computer system to it's factory shipped state). Many do not even include Operating System disks. This is not specific to systems purchased from any one company, but now standard practice throughout the entire industry. However, many manufacturers include software on the hard drive that creates recovery media for you. This allows burning your own set of recovery CDs or DVDs - all you need is the blank media.Inclusion of such a recovery utility varies by manufacturer and model; not all manufactures and models include such a utility. For those that include such a utility we recommend you create your own set of recovery media after completing the Windows installation. In other words, right after you startusing your PC!If you fail to do this and encounter a difficulty in the future you may not be able to properly restore your computer. Some manufacturers may have physical recovery media available separately for purchase; consult your owner???s manual support information section foradditional information. Systems that do not come with a CD/DVD burner may still include Recovery Disks - please check the manufacturer's specs. This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. For a couple of weeks now, I noticed that in WM11 for Windows Vista, I cannot get the radio station streams to play. Example:
WM11 | Media Guide | Internet Radio | New Age | Show All |
Whisperings: Solo Piano | "Play".
Normally, the stream would start at this stage. It no longer does so. My first thought was to reinstall WM11. However, I cannot find it anywhere. The MS site refers to the XP version and WM11 doesn't appear in the Control Panel | Programs & Features section. My system: Windows Business x32 SP1 & IE 8 RC1

It appears that Windows Media Player that comes with Vista Enterprise does not include the ability to play DVDs. When I try it says that no codec is installed. what I need to download, preferably for free, to either get WMP to play DVDs, or a free player that's not too obnoxious with ads. I tried installing the K-Lite Standard Codec pack, but either I did it wrong or it isn't enough.

I've had Vista Home Premium installed on my desktop PC for over a year now, but I never used Windows Media Center until recently and noticed this problem when I purchased a Media Center Extender. After choosing the folders (music, video and image) that I wanted in my WMC library (on BOTH my desktop PC AND Media Center Extender), only my image files do not appear in the libraries. Under "Picture Library" (again, on both units), all folders and sub-folders which I selected are shown but contain no "items". The files which I desire to view are .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, and .bmp formats and I have converted some back and forth between formats to see if that changed anything. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on this?

After selecting my folder it pops up on the bottom right that it is adding media, it says it is searching for files and it just keeps doing that. It has been running for a few hours now and is still going. SHould it take this long? I have about 15 cd's worth of media in the folder.

I've been lurking in this and other MS groups for some time hoping to find the answer to my problem, but so far, nothing has worked. Using Vista64 with 4g ram, with latest version of Windows Mail. McAfee Security Center. Latest versions of Windows Media Player and Real Player. Have scanned and found no virus or spyware (using McAfee). Problem: Often, but not always, attached .wmv files received in email will start in Windows Media Player, or in Real Player if I chose that one. In both programs the .wmv file will start with audio and video. About 1/4 into the movie, it stops playing completely. Screen goes black with a message imposed "Play Again>". No other error message.
This has been going on for a few months and it _seems_ like it was around the time that comcast changed its email program. I did notice that wmv's coming from comcast emailers would almost always behave as described, but now I notice that it also comes (seldom) from other ISPs. I have tried saving the files in a folder and then opening them by double clicking them in Explorer, but it makes no difference. I've also tried opening them directly from WMP with same results. I've updated my video driver (Nvidea), still no joy. I have been able to google the various .wav files and download and play them completely but of course I'm not sure where the emailed file originated online.

I got the following message when playing DVDs on Vista home premium with Windows Media Player. The same problem happens to media center. Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card. I can play those DVDs on PowerDVD or VLC player. I installed K-Lite codec. It still doesn't work. It looks like it is not codec problem.

I recently just upgraded my motherboard and ram and ended up having to rebuy vista as my computer was previously factory built.

I know this topic has been covered on the forum, as I've read about problems others are having. I cannot play any avi files in Media Player 11 or Picasa. I have downloaded codecs up the ying-yang and nothing has worked... xvid, divx and a few other bundles reported to work... I can see the video, but no audio. I downloaded Media Player Classic and that works fine, but I would really like to be able to use Media Player 11 and Picasa as well.

i use vista 64-bit and the media player that came with it plus a codec package from windows. for the past 2 years i have been very happy with it with no problems what so ever. however now, without downloading any patches, my media player has decided it won't play certain videos. i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)
