Media Centre To Play 1/2 The 500 Gb Worth Of Movies
Mar 22, 2009
I have had this new HP vista media centre computer for 2 weeks, and can't get Media Centre to play 1/2 the 500 gb worth of movies that my old XP media Centre played without any trouble at all! Some are MPEG-4, others are div-x, some are Dvd format. I have seen others with similar posts in other forums and I have loaded up all the lates codecs (safe one) from Divx, and ffdshow etc... I have to play all my movies with Nero or Media Player, which both have no issues with. I feel like this is a dud, and can't believe that a full hard recovery is worth the trouble.
will trying to play (avi) movies on Windows Media Center (64bit) i get a error that one or more codes are missing to play the video? now today i tryed it and i get the audio but still no video?

How to get MKV files to play on Windows Media Centre on x32 & x64 systems.
1st Open up a notepad!
2nd Copy the text below that is between the lines and paste into the notepad:- _____________________________________________________________________________
Im trying to watch a movie on my laptop. It keeps asking me to download flash. i download it no problem but will still not play the movie. Kinda stumped.....Its not just movies, it involves anything flash....
I have had a few dramas, have had a factory reset, warranty issues you name it. have loaded all back in again, have had some Malware issues, all has been solved. Finally I think my computer is working properly again, happy days.Wanted to whack on some random tunes from Media Centre and found that it no longer exists on computer. I have looked at Microsoft site and can't sem to find a download for Windows Vista Media Player.
When running media centre and listening to music there an option to run a slideshow. How can i control where it gets it's pictures from? I'm tired of looking at various buttons and banners from assorted software apps, visited websites etc and maps of europe from my tomtom backup. I tried changing the stetting in the Library option to no avail - even with no directories set to watch, it still pulls in picture files from random locations - is there any way of controlling where media centre gets it's pictures from. I have a single directory with all my photos - how can i get it just to use this directory?
When I try to access Media Centre's online section I get the message that i need an internet connection. I have anup to 8Mb broadband connection which gets used every day with no problem by IE7, Outlook and several other packages with no problem. I have tried switching off Virus checkers, firewall and spyware checkers but this makes no difference.
i've windows vista 64 bit i've got some avi movies or other extension and i've downloaded sld 1.53 and 2.0.XXX i don''t remember but all movies don't work on media player. i need codec that lets movies run on vista's media player normally.
I have an 10/100 wired connection through a linksys router to an XBOX 360 and am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. I've had ZERO succuss in playing MCE content - ie MP3s and viewing JPGs - on the XBox.
The Media Center menus on the Xbox are intolerably slow, taking 5-30 seconds to respond. Eventually if I have the patience to wait until the XBOX Media center accesses the files located on the Vista machine it takes upwards of 2 minutes just to load one jpg. When I run the tune network tool in WMC I get a message saying that:
"Your network may not have enough bandwidth for consistent performance on your extender device."
When I view the performance graph in the tool my bandwith barely registers on the graph.
Other things I have tried to no avail: - turned off all firewalls - unitstalled anti-virus software - port forwarded the following ports in the router, TCP2869, TCP10243, UDP1900, UDP10280 to UDP10284 - played with the flow control settings - tried selecting all possible "speed & duplex" settings
Support from Microsoft sucks:mad:. The XBox people have pawned me off on the Vista support people. I wouldn't let the Vista support people hand me back to the XBox people...although they tried pretty hard. The Vista support people are saying they need to recreate the problem in their lab and get back to me.
Originally my intention was to go the whole nine yards with WMC, ie, the dual digital TV tuners/PVR thing etc etc. However, I ended up getting a deal on a Sky+ box, so, long story short, I really just use it to play music and movies. I don't have an extensive picture library and so on, so I just get it to watch the Music and Movie directories. All the others have been removed from the watch-list and now I would like these other folders to die with dignity as far as the main interface is concerned. I don't want to have to go up (to Pictures) then across to Videos. I know this may seem as if I would be interested in hiring someone to do my breathing for me, and maybe I won't lose any sleep over it, but I would like to slim down the primary interface if it can be done.
I am running Window Vista Home Premium SP1 and have been unable to start WMC using the remote control, shortcuts or by running the ehshell.exe both normally and as administrator. When I try to start WMC using any of the above it looks like the programme trys to start (blue circle appears for a few seconds) then nothing happens.
The last time I tried to open MCE I recieved the following error message: - C:WINDOWSehomeehshell.exe "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Every few days after restarting the PC an icon appears on the system tray informing me that WMC is downloading guide information from the net for the TV channel listing. When I right click on the icon and select open WMC I get the following error message: - "Unable to start Windows Media Centre"
I have tried setting up a new shortcut, uninstalled and reinstalled SP1 and have installed the latest driver for my video card NVIDIA GeForce 7650 GS driver 7.15.11.7490 and have still been unable to resolve the problem. I have searched the net and Microsoft support and have been unable to find a solution
I've used Windows all the way from Windows 95 up to the latest incarnation, none of the previous versions have been so buggy, unreliable or slow as Vista. I have a brand new PC with 2 gigs of ram and Vista is just out of its depth. Start up takes for ever, it often hangs on shut down, Explorer is constantly re starting, media centre is slow and crashes, side bar is constantly crashing, blocked start up programmes keep restarting even though they've been blocked, the latest problem, after a windows update, my Vista ready printer is now incompatible, the printer support know its a problem and they're rushing to update their drivers. Each time Windows updates I lose my optical drive and have to alter the registry, a known problem with half a fix. System restore won't restore, just like the problem they had in ME.
The people I bought the PC from, a big well known company, said yes they know the issues and are as frustrated as it customers. All in all its a disgrace and I feel I have been taken as a mug by Bill Gates, now to add insult to injury Gates is talking about the next new OS with in the next year or two, as things stand now a PC with a Windows OS is just going to b a liability to any one buying one, the future to me looks PC free. For the record I'm not a Linux freak, I've been down that road, its as bad as the rocky Microsoft road.
I got the following message when playing DVDs on Vista home premium with Windows Media Player. The same problem happens to media center. Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card. I can play those DVDs on PowerDVD or VLC player. I installed K-Lite codec. It still doesn't work. It looks like it is not codec problem.
i can't get media player to play dvd's it tells me to ''lower my resolution'' which is set at 1680 x 1050. i do this and nothing i take the resolution all the way to 800x600 and nothing gives me the same message so i surmized that their was another problem. I recently just upgraded my motherboard and ram and ended up having to rebuy vista as my computer was previously factory built.
I know this topic has been covered on the forum, as I've read about problems others are having. I cannot play any avi files in Media Player 11 or Picasa. I have downloaded codecs up the ying-yang and nothing has worked... xvid, divx and a few other bundles reported to work... I can see the video, but no audio. I downloaded Media Player Classic and that works fine, but I would really like to be able to use Media Player 11 and Picasa as well.
As the subject line says: Why can't I play DVD's in Windows Media Player for Vista anymore? This is what I have installed as for the Windows Media Player for Vista. Look at ALL the listed under "MPEG/DVD Filters" I have. So why in the hell I can't play simple retail movie DVD's anymore.

New to the forum but just installed vista 64 the other night so im sure i'll be here a lot! Now i've been looking a lot into how to play AVI files through the media center, and it seems everyone uses the FFDShow program. So, after installing vista64, drivers, and all updates (except SP1), and configuring the media center I then installed:
I am new to windows vista, and I encountered a problem that I want to using Netscape navigator to browse web and sometime I visit website that contain media files such as mp3, wma... and the browse doesn't play it using WMP. With Firefox browse can play them after I install the plugin but Netscape doesn't. I have find around to find a plugin for Netscape but I have not found yet. Any body can tell me the way to fix it? I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit with SP1, WMP 11.0.6001.7000, netscape navigator 9b3.
i use vista 64-bit and the media player that came with it plus a codec package from windows. for the past 2 years i have been very happy with it with no problems what so ever. however now, without downloading any patches, my media player has decided it won't play certain videos. i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)
Just reinstalled Vista (32) Untimate. Was haveing trouble installing SP1 and needed to get rid of a lot of junk so did a complete new install. Now WMP 11 will not play. Get a msg that says the following "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Get this msg when trying to play MP3, WMA and WMV's. Worked fine before reinstall. I tried ripping a track and it worked fine but after ripping would not play the file - rip both to MP3 and WMA. Downloaded Winamp and it works fine and plays all the files.
I've been using Media Center for XP and then Vista for a few months. Due to a random pause issue that I can't track down, I've built another MCE-HTPC and installed Vista x64. The install of Vista and hardware went about as smooth as it can get. BUT... now that I've installed my codecs and such, MCE won't play any videos. These are videos that 32-bit XP MCE and Vista MCE had no issues playing before. In fact I can even load Windows Media Player and it will play the same videos with out a problem. But once I load MCE, I get the "can not locate codec" and it refuses to play. Since I've not had problems in the past... I is there a cache or database of some kind that Vista32 might have left that now Vista64 is trying to read and it's now unable to load the videos?... also, I did update my codecs to newer versions as well... is it possible that Vista32 had "named" codecs list and now Vista64 is trying to find the same codec name... only it's changed?
i upgraded from XP pro to vista and i cannot seem to get medial player to play DVD files like it did in XP. What i did, i left XP installed on a 40GB "C"drive and installed vista "clean" on a 300GB "d" drive, hoping i could import a few inportant files and bookmarked internet sites later. Is there any way to find the codec from XP and install it into media player in vista?
I have windows ultimate. I had someone send me a file in Outlook. I've saved the file to my clients folder. Now I want open media player and play the file. I've tried to open files buy it only opens c:users. I can't seem to find where to open a file an play a file on my c drive.
For a couple of weeks now, I noticed that in WM11 for Windows Vista, I cannot get the radio station streams to play. Example:
WM11 | Media Guide | Internet Radio | New Age | Show All | Whisperings: Solo Piano | "Play".
Normally, the stream would start at this stage. It no longer does so. My first thought was to reinstall WM11. However, I cannot find it anywhere. The MS site refers to the XP version and WM11 doesn't appear in the Control Panel | Programs & Features section. My system: Windows Business x32 SP1 & IE 8 RC1
When I try to play video or audio files on Media Center through the TV via HDMI, the video and audio is very laggy. It also sounds sort of static like. When I play CD's or DVD's the problem is resolved. Also, when I unplug the HDMI, the problem is resolved. Also, when I minimize Media Center, the problem is resolved. It only happens when the HDMI is plugged in and Media Center is Maximized. I have searched all over and have not been able to find a solution to this problem. I have tried changing the HDMI cords and changing the HDMI input on the TV. I've also tried to use a different TV and no luck.
It appears that Windows Media Player that comes with Vista Enterprise does not include the ability to play DVDs. When I try it says that no codec is installed. what I need to download, preferably for free, to either get WMP to play DVDs, or a free player that's not too obnoxious with ads. I tried installing the K-Lite Standard Codec pack, but either I did it wrong or it isn't enough.
We're on dial-up here at home. Last year when the huge Office update came out (about 100MB) I had to take 2 computers- a laptop and a desktop- down to a computer place and rent time on their network. Is SP1 worth the trouble? This download of 65MB-427MB (shown on windows update) done via dial-up will take from 4 to 24 hours per computer! Is SP1 REALLY worth it?
