Is SP1 REALLY Worth It?
Mar 23, 2008
We're on dial-up here at home. Last year when the huge Office update
came out (about 100MB) I had to take 2 computers- a laptop and a
desktop- down to a computer place and rent time on their network. Is
SP1 worth the trouble? This download of 65MB-427MB (shown on windows
update) done via dial-up will take from 4 to 24 hours per computer! Is
SP1 REALLY worth it?

Running a fairly new (6 mos) HP Pavillion dv6646us. 2 G RAM, AMD Turion 64 x2. nvidia GE Force 7150M w/ 64M dedicated RAM, 735M shared RAM 160 GB HD. 3.0 Windows System Experience Index. Currently running Home Premium SP1. I own a copy of Ultimate SP1 I got from attending a Microsoft release seminar. I tried loading once and it hung part way through and I gave up... will really buy myself anything upgrading, or will I cause my system to run slower and bog down

I have had this new HP vista media centre computer for 2 weeks, and can't get Media Centre to play 1/2 the 500 gb worth of movies that my old XP media Centre played without any trouble at all! Some are MPEG-4, others are div-x, some are Dvd format. I have seen others with similar posts in other forums and I have loaded up all the lates codecs (safe one) from Divx, and ffdshow etc... I have to play all my movies with Nero or Media Player, which both have no issues with. I feel like this is a dud, and can't believe that a full hard recovery is worth the trouble.

If your thinking about installing video download software Here's some friendly advice: DON'T DO IT!!!!! I experimented with it the last 10 days and it's not worth the trouble. First of all I went through 4 programs before I finally found one that worked. 5. The list is DTV4PC, Graboid, eMule, Limewire, and finally the cream of the crop Ares. The biggest reason I'm saying this is this software is an adware - malware magnet. Ares worked well and did not itself cause any problems but the downloaded videos when I ran them would infect my computer with adware & malware. My computer, programs, Internet Explorer and mouse would all lock up and the only way out was to turn off the computer and then turn it back on. Rebooting is time consuming. This caused me to do 2 installs of my OS in the past week. Stay away from these programs.

I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and my questions are:
Is Vista 64 worth the upgrade over Vista 32?
Should I wait on upgrading?
Are there any major programs incompatible with Vista 64?
