When I was running XP Pro my printer driver allowed me to see my ink levels. When I moved to Vista the old driver no longer worked and the Vista driver did not provide any capability for monitoring ink levels. Does anyone know of a utility that would allow me to see the ink levels in a HP g95 all-in-one printer under the Vista OS?
A friend of mine has been complaining that a notebook of his didn't come with an OEM recovery disc, but instead had a program to use to create the disc. The company is Toshiba. I was wondering, are computer manufacturers required by the M$ licensing laws to provide the media, or are they allowed to just install a program to create the media?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I'm a techie and realize that this requires a complete re-install (which I'm quite comfortable doing). The manufacturer (gateway) did not provide the anytime upgrade CD. Gateway will not provide 64-bit media. The technical (re-install) part of this task easy. The challenge is figuring out what to buy, how to buy it, and where to buy it from (without paying an arm and a leg for the full retail version).
My god Microsoft, can you make this upgrade any more obtuse and confusing? There appears to be a $159 upgrade available from Home Premium to Ultimate, but I cannot find concise information about how to buy it and whether this upgrade applies to a 32-bit OEM installation. Some sites suggest that this upgrade only applies to the the Retail version, not the OEM version, but it's not clear. [Unfortunately, now I can't find the link to the $159 upgrade offer, but it's somewhere on Microsoft's site.] Do I need both the Anytime Upgrade disk and 64-bit media?
I've looked, unsuccessfully, for software that can monitor an report on program or services that run during the day on my computer. I've looked in Administrative Tools but didn't find any log files there. Task Manager|Services tab don't have a sort by starting time. I'm not really concerned with the services that start when my computer starts. I have an event sound for 'Open program' and it seems to be getting triggered more than I would prefer.

When I boot my machine I notice internet activity on the DSL box. Since I haven't started any programs I am wondering what is using the internet before I do. I can only assume that things like Windows Update are checking stuff as well as other programs unbeknownst to me. Running Vista Home Premium.

I noticed today while digging around in System Restore's settings that it has monitoring enabled on my Gateway computers recovery partition. I disabled it as I don't think monitoring that partition is necessary. Am i right?

View 4 Replies View Relatedsome of you might recognize me from the windows 7 forums, this is my first post here. I have never used vista except to help my friends so I am not very familiar with it, but it's very close to the windows 7 interface so it's not that hard to learn. My friend has Vista and has a problem with her wireless. she has a lenovo R61i Laptop. the router is linksys WRT54GC. randomly the wireless capability gets disabled even though the physical switch is not changed ( is always on ), this happens usually when the PC is restarted or when the router is restarted. sometimes we restart the PC or the router but it doesn't occur, so I cannot re-create the problem easily.
I googled a bit and saw some people suggesting this could be because the wireless service is not set to automatic, so I checked services and the only service that seems to have to do with the wireless is the WLAN service, and it is set to automatic and started. all we have to do is just do diagnose and vista will say that the solution to the problem is found , which is to enable the wireless capability, so I click on that and it will enable wireless and everything will work. but for my friend is it confusing as she thinks there is a problem with her internet connection or her router, I told her it is a simple bug with vista ( I think ) and I will look for a solution.
So What else can I check? we had limited time today but tomorerow I will try more things, maybe I will try an update for the wireless driver. btw it is an intel built-in wirless. I thought I would ask if any of you have run into an issue like this and what did you do to reslove it. sounds to me like a bug with vista as I said but not really sure...Windows Update is turned on, so I asume the latest updates for vista are installed but i did not check if SP1 is installed or not.
I am using Windows Vista Ultiamte SP1. I read that they would be incorporating Firewire 800(1394B)capability with SP1.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a new computer from Dell and assumed I would have some problems learning a new OS, but I did not anticipate the loss of a good applet like Microsoft Fax. I counted on this small program for occasional direct communication with other facilities fax machine. It was quick and easy.
I have a second older Dell computer which I invested with hardware updates in preparation for upgrading to Vista as well. The lack of fax capability in Vista precludes my upgading as I need one machine that can function in a more complete manner. I don't pretend to understand the rationale behind this lack in Vista but I sorely miss the function. Others have teased me about my early adoption of Vista and now I am definitely embarrassed. I sincerely hope Microsoft will reconsider this situation and perhaps at least offer a download correction to improve the functionality of this Vista suite......
I am still trying to make a decision about going to Vista. Is there any macro capability in Windows Mail? The absence of macros in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP is a pain. I did not see the word "macro" in the downloaded messages.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an Epson Stylus C64 printer which I am able to use as normal (with ink levels and status monitor appearing) on my old computer with Windows XP.
My new laptop is Vista and although I have installed the Epson Stylus Printer Software that came with the printer onto the laptop, the Ink Indicator Levels and the Epson Status Monitor options showing in 'Printer Prefences' seem to be grayed-out/disabled. I am unable to gauge my ink levels so have no idea how much ink I have available and/or when to replace it. The actual printing seems to be fine at the moment but I am unable to tell when the ink requires replacing.
I have tried to re-install the Epson Printer software but nothing seems to change - the ink levels and status monitor contine to be disabled/grayed out. I noticed that when installing the software I am asked to disable any anti-virus software - I have Norton installed but have no idea how to uninstall it - my computer also seems to be automatically provided with something called McAfee Security - again I am unsure how to disable this and whether in fact I need to do this - it may be that the anti-virus programs are hindering the Epson software from fully loading? Any ideas and/or suggestions would be most welcome.
I am trying to adjust my mixer to accomodate my new speakers, the voice is too low, and the base is too high. I have accessed the mixer and tried to make it tollerable, but have failed. There is no direct bass and treble adjustment, and there is not a "user" or "custom" setting. There are only presets, the problems with these presets, is that they work in certain situations, but not in others. Any advise? Am I looking in the worng place? Can I put software in place to adjust the levels indepent of each other? I am using the onboard sound card on an Abit IP35 Pro, and I am using Home Premium 64.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the switch button for my wireless network adapter on my laptop. It doesn't turn the radio on when the laptop restarts. I suppose, it stays on off no matter what the button position is. So at every boot one has to:
- wait until it fails, (so all programs needing network at startup fail too)
- click on the network icon in the system tray, diagnose and repair
- wait for Vista to work out that there is no wireless connectivity,
- click on turn on wireless connectivity then wait until Vista repairs itself.
After that is works happily until the next reboot. I repeat - it is not some software option. The on/off switch doesn't work (nor the function key). Question 1 Can I switch on the connectivity on startup to allow this to happen seamlessly. Is there a cmd command which I can setup to run at startup.
Question 2 Is there some way of creating a shortcut which would allow the click of one button rather than going through the learning experience each time that the connectivity requires to be switched on.
I am installing a new Gigabyte mobo (MA78GM-US2H) in an HP Media Center Case. The pin layout between the case & mobo is nearly the same except that the HD LED and the Power LED are reversed on the new mobo. The power switch pins are correct. The case does not have reset capability. Does it matter that the two LED pin connectors are reversed or should I attempt to change the wires coming from the case?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.
View 6 Replies View Relateda friend has a new sony vaio with vista home premium installed. For some reason it will not connect to my netgear router wirelessly. I have tried everything. I am however not too hot on Vista as this is my first time with it. The adaptor says its on, but when you interegate it and ask why it wont connect it keeps telling me "switch on wireless adaptor capability". In the network connections it is on, the switch on the front right is swiitched on and the wireless network light on the front is on. The network is fine and working as i have my laptop connected to it. All security is present and entered. It seems to be the computer as it doesnt find any networks when there are loads in the area. Am i missing something exceptionally obvious? Does Vista have another "on" switch for this adaptor?
