A friend of mine has been complaining that a notebook of his didn't come with an OEM recovery disc, but instead had a program to use to create the disc. The company is Toshiba. I was wondering, are computer manufacturers required by the M$ licensing laws to provide the media, or are they allowed to just install a program to create the media?
View 9 RepliesI want to upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I'm a techie and realize that this requires a complete re-install (which I'm quite comfortable doing). The manufacturer (gateway) did not provide the anytime upgrade CD. Gateway will not provide 64-bit media. The technical (re-install) part of this task easy. The challenge is figuring out what to buy, how to buy it, and where to buy it from (without paying an arm and a leg for the full retail version).
My god Microsoft, can you make this upgrade any more obtuse and confusing? There appears to be a $159 upgrade available from Home Premium to Ultimate, but I cannot find concise information about how to buy it and whether this upgrade applies to a 32-bit OEM installation. Some sites suggest that this upgrade only applies to the the Retail version, not the OEM version, but it's not clear. [Unfortunately, now I can't find the link to the $159 upgrade offer, but it's somewhere on Microsoft's site.] Do I need both the Anytime Upgrade disk and 64-bit media?
When I was running XP Pro my printer driver allowed me to see my ink levels. When I moved to Vista the old driver no longer worked and the Vista driver did not provide any capability for monitoring ink levels. Does anyone know of a utility that would allow me to see the ink levels in a HP g95 all-in-one printer under the Vista OS?
My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

I am told I need a license and to get it, I am sent to a website that does nothing. No information on the website is offered to obtain the license other than to go to certain other websites, and pay for the license.
Up until today, I could play the mp3's with no problems. Perhaps due in part in using "Rhapsody" for the first time. My problem is, how and where exactly do I obtain this "license" which should be free, or at least at bare minimal cost for ALL of my mp3's? Not just a select few. It's my damn property, microsoft ain't gonna tell me how and when i can use it.

I would like to purchase and install Vista Home Premium but since I have a licensed copy of XP Home, I am wondering if a) I'm entitled to use an upgrade license of Vista, and b) can I install Vista Home Premium over top of the existing enterprise edition and reference the XP license keys when prompted?

When I go the ComputerProperties route to activate the system and to purchase a new license, I keep getting the message "Unable to process your order at this time. Please try again later." I have a Sony Vaio VGC-LA1. Originally it was running Windows XP Media Centre 2005. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have acquired my Vista license in a rather peculiar mode, I will describe it so bear with me (there's a question at the end): I had been looking for a Vista license for a while but most IT shops didn't have any types on stock until I reached three webshops which were offering Vista Home Premium (both x32 and x64, the type that I now run). All of them were advertised on site only with the simple name at a price around 100 and something USD (about 130 I would guess with currency conversion).
I called all three asking for an update quote mentioning my interest in a purchase. Two called me back confirming the price but saying the license there was OEM, therefore it can't be sold like that, only with a system purchased from them, either on the spot or purchased from them less than three months ago. I had no idea what OEM means at the time. The third one however accepted my order and shipped a Vista package, which contained a brief OEM manual, a sticker and the original DVD (with all those cute colorful Microsoft holograms). Of course the package was legit, I put the sticker on my PC, installed it, passed genuine validation & everything. But I still wonder, since this package is obviously OEM and I didn't get my computer from that company anyway, is there a chance I could get in trouble for that? OR maybe the company who sold me the license will get in trouble?
Purchased: New Systemax Computer from TigerDirect.com, Has Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64bit installed. The installed O.S. has a O.E.M. volume license number. The unit came with a Windows O.S. Cd with it's own product key. Can I change the volume license number to the individual computer product key without reinstalling the operating system.? If this is possible how do I proceed? It also says: "EXCLUSIVELY for system builders." And after some research on the Wikipedia I see that COMPANIES that sell PCs normally buy OEM licenced software. I gues users should buy a "retail" version. (NOT OEM versions)

I recently purchased a Vista Home Premium upgrade package and I want to upgrade by OEM version of XP (Media Center) shipped on my computer. I must also maintain XP on a dualboot partition for legacy applications compatibility issues. As long as they test it, they should not run it with my license, but as a 30 days trial. Of course, my Vista is alreadyactivated. So, how can I turn its image back into an unactivated trial? (A clean install is no option for my colleagues, since I installed applications, drivers, tweaks and hacks, which only make the value of this particular installation.)
