Can't Activate Vista As It Says Its Already In Use And I Require Another License
Mar 23, 2008
I have a Sony Vaio VGC-LA1. Originally it was running Windows XP Media Centre 2005. I upgraded it to Vista Home Premium using a Vista Express Upgrade Disc sent to me from Sony. this included all the relevant updated drivers and applications. A few weeks ago the HDD died and had to be replaced. I've reinstalled XP from my recovery disc, then upgraded again to Vista using Vista Express Disc. However I can't activate Vista as it says its already in use and I require another license. How can I activate it?

I have always un-ticked Indexing in XP Pro (to speed up overall system performance) and search/find worked by actually searching the hard drive/folder. But in Vista when I turn off Indexing, search does not work at all. It doesn't list any search results at all, it doesn't even attempt to search through the drive/folder. Is that normal?

I recently installed VMware on my Vista 64-bit desktop. I used the Vista 32-bit software that I have on my laptop to set up a guest system. I believe that I now need to activate this latter system by purchasing a new license.
When I go the ComputerProperties route to activate the system and to purchase a new license, I keep getting the message "Unable to process your order at this time. Please try again later." (I am now several days later...) Is there another route I should use to activate my software before my time expires (and my computer self destructs)?

I have acquired my Vista license in a rather peculiar mode, I will describe it so bear with me (there's a question at the end): I had been looking for a Vista license for a while but most IT shops didn't have any types on stock until I reached three webshops which were offering Vista Home Premium (both x32 and x64, the type that I now run). All of them were advertised on site only with the simple name at a price around 100 and something USD (about 130 I would guess with currency conversion).
I called all three asking for an update quote mentioning my interest in a purchase. Two called me back confirming the price but saying the license there was OEM, therefore it can't be sold like that, only with a system purchased from them, either on the spot or purchased from them less than three months ago. I had no idea what OEM means at the time. The third one however accepted my order and shipped a Vista package, which contained a brief OEM manual, a sticker and the original DVD (with all those cute colorful Microsoft holograms). Of course the package was legit, I put the sticker on my PC, installed it, passed genuine validation & everything. But I still wonder, since this package is obviously OEM and I didn't get my computer from that company anyway, is there a chance I could get in trouble for that? OR maybe the company who sold me the license will get in trouble?

is it also for users, who don't run a comapny? I have bought a Windows VISTA DVD and when I received it, it had "OEM System Builder Pack" written on it. It also says: "EXCLUSIVELY for system builders." And after some research on the Wikipedia I see that COMPANIES that sell PCs normally buy OEM licenced software. I gues users should buy a "retail" version. (NOT OEM versions)
Or is it OK to install it? Because Wikipedia says the requirements are:"The requirements include: automated methods of installation of the product; customization of the installation to identify the OEM; first level technical support of the product..etc."I want to install it because there's NO 64-bit Vista Ultimate in my language...excepting this OEM version. But I don't know what the consequences might be...(I mean, I can't add info about customer support, my company's name, etc....Because I'm just a user, not a manufacturer!)

Changed my old IDE CDRW/DVDR reader for a brand new DVDRW one (SATA), and I changed my CPUcooler ( had to remove all cords/connectors and replugg them again). Now when I boot up I got a "3Day remaining to Activate your Vista", and I have filled both my HDD's, I have ALOT of important infomration, family photos etc on my C: and I didn't change battery on the mainboard! ( I'm building computers as a hobby and i'v built over 10 systems, never seen this. OEM is bound to the mainboard, NOT THE DVD-RW unit

I have a computer I bought factory refurbished from a popular on-line retailer. I have a sticker on the side of the case with the product key on it. It is the official sticker with 5 groups of 5 letters and numbers. However, I ran SIW to check the numbers and they are different! What if I ever need this key? I guess the one SIW gives me is right but I don't know how to proceed. Have you heard of this? Is the one inside Windows from SIW correct? Here's what Brink posted on his tutorial. I followed these directions to check product key. It's not the product ID in control panel>system....that would be my first thought. Product Key Number I also ran this one and got the same thing as SIW gave me.

There is a link for activities on the Registry for XP and previous Windows, but I cannot find one for Vista. Will someone (with more knowhow than I) please advise me either what is the link, or tell me how to make a backup of the Registry. If I make a backup and then whilst removing unwanted files make a mistake, how do I activate the Backup? Will the activation of backup also restore the removed files?

I just applied SP1 to Vista Business 32 bit. It's now requiring me to Activate Windows and says that the activation key that it grabbed from my machine was already in use. DUH!!!!!! No kidding....I only have 1 Vista Business computer and only one key. What gives? Found this on the KB articles: Cause 1: Changes to hardware or to hardware device drivers are detected. Part of the Windows Genuine process requires that you reactivate your computer when certain hardware is changed or when certain hardware device drivers are changed. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 may update some installed device drivers. Therefore, you may be prompted to activate Windows Vista again. I can understand that....but it still will NOT allow me to activate my computer!!!!

I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.

Anytime I do any major hardware upgrade on my computer, I reinstall Vista so I don't have conflicting drivers causing problems. I've had to do that 3 times in the past 7 months or so. (Been rigorously upgrading my computer, lol) This past time when I installed a new motherboard, it wouldn't let me activate over the internet. I had to go thru the task of calling MS for activation. Now is this going to be a problem for me down the road some. Are they going to say,"Nope we're not activating your product because we suspect you're installing vista on multiple computers" Which is completely untrue. I know I'm going to reinstall again at least once by the end of the year when I get my i7 processor, new mobo and ram. I really don't want to spend another 300 dollars on Vista Ultimate because MS won't activate my current copy of it.

I have vista home premium and am experiencing the following problems: a) Internet explorer 8 suddenly disconnecting. this is happening frequently b) Slow PC- poor navigation response times. I have attempted to speed things up by doing a win disk clean and disk defrag. Also downloaded ccclean to clean up my system. All this improved PC speed marginally (say 5-10%) but my internet explorer disconnection issue continues. I am considering purchasing a registry cleaner to resolve my main 2 issues.

windows vista home premium/windows media player 11. Today I can no longer play certain mp3's I have. I am told I need a license and to get it, I am sent to a website that does nothing. No information on the website is offered to obtain the license other than to go to certain other websites, and pay for the license.
Up until today, I could play the mp3's with no problems. Perhaps due in part in using "Rhapsody" for the first time. My problem is, how and where exactly do I obtain this "license" which should be free, or at least at bare minimal cost for ALL of my mp3's? Not just a select few. It's my damn property, microsoft ain't gonna tell me how and when i can use it.

Does anybody know if it is possible to install windows Vista with a Windows 7 license key? I'm planning to buy a new pc but I don't want to switch to 7 right away, I prefer to upgrade only later on. If I'm correct it was possible to install XP with a Vista license, but I can't seem to find the same information for Windows 7.

I bought a computer in a silent auction at work. I thought the version of Vista was legit but found out it has an enterprise license. I would like to purchase and install Vista Home Premium but since I have a licensed copy of XP Home, I am wondering if a) I'm entitled to use an upgrade license of Vista, and b) can I install Vista Home Premium over top of the existing enterprise edition and reference the XP license keys when prompted?
