Disk Management - Shrink Partition In Vista

Aug 12, 2009

I refer specifically to this Tutorial;

Disk Management - Shrink Partition

A bit of background first. I have recently had installed a new 320GB Hard-drive to my Laptop [see my Specs]. The allocation of partition [volume] space has been divided evenly between the C:[Acer] - 139GB, and the D:[Data] - 138GB, Drives on the HD.

This is what I have;

Questions;

Question 1; Is this setup division just the 'norm' for allocating volume space for each drive? In this case it is more or less a 50:50 share of the available space [PQ Service on a hidden partition takes up the rest]....why not 65%[C]:35%[D]? Question 2; Is it necessary for the partition volume of the Data drive to more or less mirror that of the Acer drive? Question 3; If answer to Q2 is 'not necessarily so', am I then able to partition the Data drive to create a new drive partition of about 60GB, or are there any pitfalls in playing around with this particular drive? If possible, I'd like to create a new drive on the HD for personal data storage.

Flash Drive Has No Drive Letter, Not In Disk Management

Mar 23, 2008

I recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.

Disk Management - Shrink Volume

Feb 6, 2009

I have a laptop with a 90GB hard disk. There is 60GB free and I'm trying to use the Shrink volume option in Disk Management to make the main partition smaller. After I want to create an additional partition so I can dual boot. The problem lies with Shrink Volume. Even though I have 60GB free it's only offering me the chance to shrink by 14GB.I've turned off system restore and hibernate. I've also used a number of defrag tools including Auslogic and SysInternals.

Shrink Volume & Create New Partition Using Disk Management Console

Jun 2, 2009

I downloaded Windows 7 RC1 with the intent of adding a partition to my HDD and dual booting. My understanding is that I would need a 16GB partition. My Disk Management Console tells me I have two existing primary partitions (expected). D (the recovery partition) is 6.62GB. The other (C) makes up the difference (~142GB) and has 47.1GB free space. When I begin the "shrink volume" process, it says that only 3MB is available to shrink C. I checked the page file and it has less than 3GB allocated to it. So, I have two questions. First, why isn't more shrinkage ;>) space available? Two, assuming that with your help I can find more space, if I try to create a 16GB partition from C will I significantly affect computer performance?

Can Change Drive Letters In Disk Management

Apr 15, 2009

I have 5 USB devices (2 external drives, 1 flash drive, one CF card reader, and 1 Sony walkman) that when connected score a drive letter. My problem is that the drive letters change depending on the order in which the devices are connected (the first one plugged in gets drive F, then G, etc). This causes a headache for my backup software SyncBackPro, where I have schemes set up for my two external hard drives based on drive letters. I can change the drive letters in Disk Management (Vista Ultimate) but that only sticks while that device is connected. For instance, if I unplug my primary backup drive G and connect my flash drive, the flash drive would then become G. Is there any way of permanently locking a particular device to a particular drive letter?

Windows Can't Format Drive H: - Check To See That The Disk And Drive Are Connected Properly

Jul 29, 2009

i just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.

For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

Program Management Groups Don't Drive Usability

Jun 26, 2008

Subject: Windows Usability Systematic degradation flame. I am quite disappointed at how Windows Usability has been going backwards and the program management groups don't drive usability issues. Let me give you my experience from yesterday. I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ... so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there.

The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up. This site is so slow it is unusable. It wasn't in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45. These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C: Documents and SettingsillgMy DocumentsMy Pictures seem clear..............

Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive

May 2, 2008

I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)

Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

San Disk Thumb Drive With U3

May 1, 2009

I have a San Disk 4GB Cruzer Micro thumb drive with U3 on it. I had orginally gotten the drive when I had a HP that was running Windows XP. It worked fine on that computer. Well the XP machine took a crap and was replaced with a Compaq that is running Vista Home. The drive was NOT inserted with the HP crashed. Now when I insert the Thumb drive into a usb port it lights up and shows in "my computer" as an Audio CD with a drive letter of "H". The Launchpad does not start and the password screen does not come up either. The directory of the drive only shows 1 file (which does not open) and there was aprox 1000 files on it before. San Disk has been no help and I have not been able to find anything on the internet that has helped. Oh did I mention that I have very little computer knowledge, .

I normally would not be to ticked about this but all the files on the drive are family photos, photo's of hunting trips etc. I know my fault for not saving them to a CD and relying on a thumb drive but I thought they were more reliable than this. Here is a little twist, I have another Sandisk thumb drive that was used with the XP machine but this one works on the vista machine! I havent been able to try the drive that I am having trouble with on another XP machine as I dont have access to one (work switched all computers to vista). I dont know if it is a formatting issue or what but I can not figure it out.

Disk Management & EISA Partition: Delete And Remove To Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery Or Diagnostic Partition In Vista

Jan 14, 2009

I think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life

Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.

Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.

Disk Drive - Can't Recall 'disappeared'

Apr 9, 2010

This is the second time this has happened, only the first time it reappeared after i rebooted. Basically, i can't recall the day it 'disappeared' but it was over 4/5 days ago i think. I've rebooted a number of times, tried the DVD drive tutorial thing from windows, and ran a few scans and still nothing.

However, my device manager tells me that its working correctly. Great. I dont think i've done anything differently, i first noticed it was acting up when i converted and burnt a dvd onto a disk and the drive wouldnt open, so i had to reboot, it opened and then there was nothing on the disk, and from then on its gone........
