I would like to change the "Disk Drive Policies" (see attached screenshot). If I check the box "Enable write caching on disk" and "Enable advanced performance" and then click ok and after that I reopen the "Policies" again evrything is like it was before I made the changes. Is there anything I can do in order that the changes I make will be accepted and won't jump back to the previous settings?
View 4 Repliesi just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.
For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..
I recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.

Random programs are showing up in there without me using them and the programs I do use aren't getting added. I have checked the settings and both of the necessary checkboxes are ticked. So I had a search on this forum and found a post that advised you to change a file in the registry at this address : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer however in the registry editor treeview the Policies folder is empty.

My school's website had a set of instructions for how to make my computer compatible, but they required going into Administrative Tools and then to Local Security Policies, and for some reason Local Security Policies is not there.
Basically my question is where the heck did Local Security Policies go? I feel like this should be an easy enough question, but nothing I've tried has worked.

I have a Local User Account created on a Vista Business computer. This Vista system is on our Domain. I need to have this local account NOT use the Domain password policies. I am NOT able to go in and edit or change these with the Local Security Policy (They are grayed out). I am using a Domain Admin account. How do I change this? View 4 Replies View RelatedTo cut down on malicious software applications and beginner computer users from changing critical computer settings, Microsoft has included a new feature called User Account Control, primarily known as UAC. UAC is a great step in the right direction. It can be used to prevent a beginner computer user from making changes to their computer by restricting them from accessing or even saving any changes to critical areas. UAC is also helpful against Spyware and other malicious software because it will require the user to consent to the action, before any system changes are made.
UAC is a good feature but sometimes it is necessary to tweak it a little so that it is less annoying for more experienced users. For example, an advanced user may be overwhelmed by the number of pop up authorization they receive. By tweaking the settings they can reduce the number of those they see as well as completely disable UAC. Although I do not recommend you completely disable UAC, you can fine tune it to be easier to get along with.
1. To get started, open up the Local Security Settings MMC to show the local security policies by running secpol.msc.
2. Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.
3. Scroll through the list on the right of the various security settings until your reach the User Account Protection settings. Refer to the list below of the various settings, to change them, just right click and select Modify. Items in bold are the default values.

I am the administrator for my computer, I sign in and go to my control panel and when I select a program I want to unistall it says "the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" for one I am the system administrator and I am trying to uninstall, not to install, this is really starting to tick me off. I have went to the trouble section on windows. I have right clicked on it and tried to even check in as administrator and that option is not available in control panel, it is in menu options, but it does not let me uninstall in menu opitions.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a San Disk 4GB Cruzer Micro thumb drive with U3 on it. I had orginally gotten the drive when I had a HP that was running Windows XP. It worked fine on that computer. Well the XP machine took a crap and was replaced with a Compaq that is running Vista Home. The drive was NOT inserted with the HP crashed. Now when I insert the Thumb drive into a usb port it lights up and shows in "my computer" as an Audio CD with a drive letter of "H". The Launchpad does not start and the password screen does not come up either. The directory of the drive only shows 1 file (which does not open) and there was aprox 1000 files on it before. San Disk has been no help and I have not been able to find anything on the internet that has helped. Oh did I mention that I have very little computer knowledge, .
I normally would not be to ticked about this but all the files on the drive are family photos, photo's of hunting trips etc. I know my fault for not saving them to a CD and relying on a thumb drive but I thought they were more reliable than this. Here is a little twist, I have another Sandisk thumb drive that was used with the XP machine but this one works on the vista machine! I havent been able to try the drive that I am having trouble with on another XP machine as I dont have access to one (work switched all computers to vista). I dont know if it is a formatting issue or what but I can not figure it out.
when i try to install software it comes up with (drive)not enough disk space..when i have 30gb left.. when i attempt to create a restore point twice 1st came up with 0x80070070 and 2nd was. when i load a picture it says not enough picture please close some apps/free up disk space. when i uninstall a software it says an error occured while writing installation information to disk.check to make sure enough disk space is available, and click retry or cancel end the.. my computer has 1 harddrive split into C and D partitions...its an ACER 57357 with 4gb ram,2.16ghz-667mhz fsb-1mb l2 cache, 320gb harddrive, 4500m intergrated graphics

1: I can no longer activate an URL received in an incoming email directly but must copy the URL to the address bar in my Internet Explorer. This makes sense and I can live with that.
2: I discover that I can no longer open some of my word documents "created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office". The message refers to registry policy settings and the help system refers to a Microsoft knowledge base article 922850 that leads me nowhere useful.
It's my new Sony ebook reader. It works fine on my old XP pc but not my Vista Home Premium laptop. I don't know how reformatting an actual reader would affect the device since every one at the Sony forum has only reformat their memory from the actual reader that has a reformat memory, you lose your books but all the Sony applications that runs the reader are still intact. Since I got this error, I've reformatted via the actual reader and still every time I plug my reader in my USB port, I get this error. I'm scared if I say yes that all the applications that makes the reader works will be wiped out. Here is the thread in the Sony Reader Forum of them trying to help me. It does not ask if I want to open it in Windows media player or any other program. So I tried opening all my programs manually, but still it does not show that anything is in the drive.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station. Here are the menu list by right clicking on the HDD's.

I have Windows Vista but I don't have a disk because it was already on my laptop when I got it. I went to my drives to view what was going on and I get this message: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Basically, i can't recall the day it 'disappeared' but it was over 4/5 days ago i think. I've rebooted a number of times, tried the DVD drive tutorial thing from windows, and ran a few scans and still nothing.
However, my device manager tells me that its working correctly. Great. I dont think i've done anything differently, i first noticed it was acting up when i converted and burnt a dvd onto a disk and the drive wouldnt open, so i had to reboot, it opened and then there was nothing on the disk, and from then on its gone........

When I insert a blank DVD or CD, it doesn't show anything and then I got to My Computer and double click the DVD icon and I get the message that "Windows can not read the disk on drive D:" or something like that. So I went to the manufacturer site and downloaded firmware, updated, rebooted and still having the same issue. However I can read used disks, and I can burn perfectly using third party burning software. What is going on?

My Vista desktop took forever to shut down last night and today it will not start at all. The hard drive spins briefly and then gives up. I have a recovery disk the CD drive lights but it will not start from there. I would like to get it up briefly to be sure I have no new photos to back up. I have Wubi Ubuntu installed and if I could get the thing started at all, I would be able to use it to make sure I can recover anything that I desperately need. I tried to start it with PC Linux OS which is capable of running from the CD drive, but no joy there either. I would love to give you more specifics but I can't since I can't view the info, I can't. It is an E-machine, one of their T series with 180 gig hard drive. It's got lots of RAM. I was running Vista but it was an upgrade from XP.

The surprising is that I = don't have a CD, although I do have everything else. I want to remove = the erroneous D: and rename I: to D: -- and Disk Management does not = appear to help.
