How Can Vista X64 Install Physical Disk D Drive

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive
Dec 25, 2008Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
Vista 64 Installed Physical Memory Vs Total Physical Memory
Mar 26, 2009I'm running Vista 64 Home (SP1) Premium on a homebuilt machine w/8GB (4 X 2GB modules). Windows is reporting 8 GB of Installed Physical Memory but is reporting only 4 GB of Total Physical Memory. I first noticed this when, after installing a game, the game system specs said 3092 MB of RAM.
I have checked the BIOS and it recognizes 8 GB. Memory Remapping is Enabled. Under Memory Remapping is "PCI MMIO Allocation: 4GB to 3328 MB" (?). MSConfig Boot Options shows Max Memory is not checked and no value in the box below. I tried enabling it and using 8192 as the value, but it made no difference. DxDiag shows 8 GB installed RAM. how I can get windows to make available all 8 GB of RAM? (Motherboard is ASUS Maximus II Extreme w/Intel Q9550 processor running at Q9650 clock speed, memory running at 1127 MHz
Disk Management, Shrink The C Drive (Vista Drive)
Dec 12, 2008I want to shrink the C Drive (Vista Drive). Actually 111GB is free out of 236GB on the C Drive but I am only about to Shrink 6GB and even when I try to Shrink the Drive by 6GB I get an error. I want to create a new partition on my hard-disk. These are the screen shots:

I am running -Windows Vista Home Premium 64 which was preinstalled on the cpu
I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32
So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.
I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running
The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!
I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful
The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM
I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.
I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.

Jul 29, 2009i just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.
For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..
Flash Drive Has No Drive Letter, Not In Disk Management
Mar 23, 2008I recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.

She is currently running XP, but the hardware is old enough that I cannot simply swap the MBs, because a new board will need a different HAL. I was thinking about installing XP and migrating applications. I was wondering what would happen if I cloned her disk to a SATA disk and installed a Vista upgrade on top of the XP disk. I would run setup and provide the appropriate drivers at the F6 prompt. She has used Vista on occasion when we are out-of-town. I have a separate userID on my laptop that is configured to look as much as possible like XP. The question is whether a Vista upgrade would work on top of an XP image that used a lot of older hardware.

Cannot Do A Repair Install With OEM Disk
May 22, 2008I am running Vista Home Premium and want to do a "repair install." I have an OEM DVD with Vista. I have performed the repair process in the past (I think it was called Upgrade), but now that I have installed SP1, it won't work. I slipstreamed a DVD with SP1 according to the tutorial, but it still indicates that the existing version of Vista is newer than the one on the slipstreamed DVD and says that the upgrade functionality is disabled.
I noticed on the tutorial that you need a Retail version of Vista to slipstream with SP1. Is the OEM version different than the Retail version? Is that why I cannot do a Repair Install?

May 22, 2008I bought a Vista upgrade pack and formatted the hard disk for a clean install. Then the Vista upgrade disk told me it couldn't install because XP wasn't there. So I got out my XP disk and tried to reinstall that, but it won't install (apparently it's a bug that is known with this computer and many others, it needs SP2 to install, but it's a pre-SP2 XP disk). Why do Microsoft have to make it so difficult for genuine purchasers of their products?! how I can fix this? I don't need XP any more, I just want to install Vista, it should be simple...

I am reinstalling vista but after booting from DVD Vista does not recognise my SATA hard disk on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen. May 8, 2010I've never really had any problems with my computer acting up. I decided to add 2GB more RAM to my system this morning. Once I finally got them in there after much prodding and force I turned on my machine only to get this dreaded error message. I made sure the cords were still connected to the hard drive. I then took the RAM that I had just added back out but the error message still persists unfortunately. May 1, 2009I have a San Disk 4GB Cruzer Micro thumb drive with U3 on it. I had orginally gotten the drive when I had a HP that was running Windows XP. It worked fine on that computer. Well the XP machine took a crap and was replaced with a Compaq that is running Vista Home. The drive was NOT inserted with the HP crashed. Now when I insert the Thumb drive into a usb port it lights up and shows in "my computer" as an Audio CD with a drive letter of "H". The Launchpad does not start and the password screen does not come up either. The directory of the drive only shows 1 file (which does not open) and there was aprox 1000 files on it before. San Disk has been no help and I have not been able to find anything on the internet that has helped. Oh did I mention that I have very little computer knowledge, .
I normally would not be to ticked about this but all the files on the drive are family photos, photo's of hunting trips etc. I know my fault for not saving them to a CD and relying on a thumb drive but I thought they were more reliable than this. Here is a little twist, I have another Sandisk thumb drive that was used with the XP machine but this one works on the vista machine! I havent been able to try the drive that I am having trouble with on another XP machine as I dont have access to one (work switched all computers to vista). I dont know if it is a formatting issue or what but I can not figure it out.
Disk Drive Policies
May 11, 2009I would like to change the "Disk Drive Policies" (see attached screenshot). If I check the box "Enable write caching on disk" and "Enable advanced performance" and then click ok and after that I reopen the "Policies" again evrything is like it was before I made the changes. Is there anything I can do in order that the changes I make will be accepted and won't jump back to the previous settings?

Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.
