Install Both XP & Vista Drive Without Wiping Out The Existing Files
Mar 26, 2008
My previous setup was XP on drive C and Vista on drive D. Drive C has failed and been replaced, XP loaded. Vista is no longer available. Drive D files are intact but I do not know how to load Vista on that drive without wiping out the existing files.

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

I built this system and installed VISTA 64 and all my other software before I decided to build a RAID. A few weeks after start-up, I bought a couple new drives and wanted to build a RAID.I could set the BIOS up for RAID, type Ctrl+I, assign the RAID drives, but then I would get a BSOD before the Windows Boot GUI. This happened no matter what ports the RAID was in as opposed to the port positions of C: and/or my DvD drive.
I had to install the Intel Storage Matrix Manager. no luck there either. When I double click IATA88ENU.exe it tries to run, but returns "Computer does not meet the minimum system requirements. Set up will exit........

I have been running Windows Vista Ultimate for the last 60 days or so (using the trial period) but I am quickly coming up to the end of the 120 days trial period. I have now purchased Window Home premium. Is there anyway to "convert" my existing Vista Ultimate install to my Windows Home version?

I may have to re-install the Vista operating system on my primary hard drive. According to Dell, installing/re-installing Vista will erase any existing files (gee, why couldn't they have configured Vista like XP which would save your data?).So as not to loose my files, my plan is to install a new primary hard drive. And once the new drive is functioning properly, to add the old one as a data only secondary drive (The drive hasn't failed, it's just inaccessable due to a user logon password issue which I'm working in another thread). Does anyone see a problem with reading the data files/folders on the old drive? Will the existance of an operating system be a problem? I'm hoping the drive will act as a ghosted drive, and the answer will be no.

so I backed my important files up. I have all my program setups on my external hd. First off, will 32bit programs run on 64bit? And should I do anything else than backup? Do I need to do anything before reinstalling?

I have a 720GB internal drive that I've maxed out with automated weekly backups. I have another drive with a lot of space, and my question is, can Vista backup be set to continue the existing backup onto an additional drive. In other words, the backup files would be spread over two drives?

On a recent reboot from my desktop screen, I was confronted with a user login screen that asked for a password. I've never use a password for access, nor did I set my PC up this way. Don't know how it happened, but with no password, I can't get it. Dell says that I must reinstall my operating system. They also say that, unlike windows XP, a reinstallation will overwrite all of my existing files/folders. Is this true?

I am making the upgrade to a RAID1 setup for my multimedia collections. I am using a 250GB boot disk where I have 3 versions of windows installed: XP, Vista, and 7RC. So, this setup is not intended for booting purposes and is intended to be used by my different OSs.
I bought two identical 1T Maxtor HDs and a Sabrent SATA II 3Gbps 4Ports PCI ExpressRAID Card. All items have been installed into my computer. The card's BIOS recognizes the HDs and I formatted and paired the drives there for RAID1. Windows has installed updated drivers for my Sabrent controller.
For some reason I cannot see the drive on my system. I've searched all over for any incite to setting this up without reinstalling windows. Is this at all possible? Is there a program that I can download to setup the array that's similar to Intel's Matrix Storage Manager? Again this is not my primary boot drive.

I have -Dell XPS 730x with 6 GIG DDR3 RAM, Intel i7 64 bit Processor, 500 GIG disk,
I am running -Windows Vista Home Premium 64 which was preinstalled on the cpu
I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32
So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.
I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running
The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!
I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful
The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM
I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.
I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.

My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.

I need to reboot my Vista Ultimate (I know how to do this, I'll use the Recovery CD that came with my laptop), but I don't want to lose the files on my hard drive. I also have no way to access my hard drive at the moment (I tried restarting and pressing F8 and all I got was the message I initially got, below).
I got impatient at my ASUS M51 T9500 laptop freezing, so I pressed the "On/Off" button for a long time, got the computer to turn off and then pressed "On" again. The computer started, but Vista wouldn't come up. I got this error message, which I keep getting when I do "Ctrl Alt Delete" (I don't know why I tried that, I just hoped it would help) and when I restarted and pressed F8: Windows Boot Manager. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert the Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click "next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

I have a laptop with Home Premium. I'm thinking about upgrading to Ultimate. I have some questions. Home Premium doesn't have any policy editors. I know that I can change existing Registry entries & add new entries to make Vista more secure. When one makes a change to a policy editor, in what file is the change stored? Or is it stored in the Registry? If policy editor changes are stored in the Registry, then one really doesn't need to upgrade to Ultimate or have a PC with Ultimate. So, ultimately (no pun intended) can one use the Registry to make Home Premium as secure as (or possibly more secure than) Ultimate & achieve the same results as one who has Ultimate?

I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.

- Can I use any copy of Vista OEM cd and use the Product Key sticked behind my laptop?.........

I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

ASUS has just designed a new monster graphics card that breaks the mold for reference design GeForce GTX 295, called the ASUS MARS 295 Limited Edition. The card, although retains the name "GeForce GTX 295", same device ID, and is compatible with existing NVIDIA drivers, has two huge innovations put in by ASUS, which go far beyond being yet another overclocked GeForce GTX 295: the company used two G200-350-B3 graphics processors, the same ones that make the GeForce GTX 285. The GPUs have all the 240 shader processors enabled, and also have the complete 512-bit GDDR3 memory interface enabled. This dual-PCB monstrosity holds 32 memory chips, and 4 GB of total memory (each GPU accesses 2 GB of it). Apart from these, each GPU system uses the same exact clock speeds as the GeForce GTX 285: 648/1476/2400 MHz (core/shader/memory).

I can create and save an HTML file but can't save changes to an existing HTML file. When trying to save using Notepad, the error window says:
Cannot create the
C:UsersRoyDesktopWebPages est.html file
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
When trying to save using Notepad++, the error window says:
Save failed Please check whether if (sic) this file is opened in another program.
What I can do with Notepad (I haven't tried any work-around with Notepad++) is to first save the .html file as a .txt file, then open the .txt file and successfully save it as a .html file. I tell you this as a possible diagnostic clue; it is by no means an acceptable fix. This problem appeared suddenly out of the blue. I can think of nothing that might have caused it. I have tried the usual stuff, such as re-booting, but nothing has worked.

I recently bought a new Dell Studio XPS 435 with Window Vista x64. I can't connect to the internet using my existing DIR-655 router. Have my old desktop (Win XP)still connected and two wireless laptops and they have no problem. I have spoken to Dell, my ISP and tried D-Link with no success. I have updated the driver for my network card, updated the firmware on the router and have changed cables as well. It will connect when I bypass the router and go direct to the modem but not through the router. It appears that the problem is with the router but have run out of things to try.
