Can't Connect To The Internet Using My Existing DIR-655 Router
Sep 18, 2009
I recently bought a new Dell Studio XPS 435 with Window Vista x64. I can't connect to the internet using my existing DIR-655 router. Have my old desktop (Win XP)still connected and two wireless laptops and they have no problem. I have spoken to Dell, my ISP and tried D-Link with no success. I have updated the driver for my network card, updated the firmware on the router and have changed cables as well. It will connect when I bypass the router and go direct to the modem but not through the router. It appears that the problem is with the router but have run out of things to try.

Have a wireless router and cable modem on computer 2 in one bedroom. Suddenly computer 1 in another bedroom cannot connect to to internet. Worked fine until one morning. No settings were changed. Laptop has no problems connecting. Internal network device shows as working properly. Network is there - available to choose and connect to with all green bars but attempts to connect and diagnose suggest "low wireless signal quality." All recommendations have been followed to connect but nothing has worked. Computer is less than 1 year old. Is it possible that an updated driver for the wireless adapter would help? I am going to humiliate myself and ask the stupidest question ever - the same day it quit working, some very large construction equipment was parked in an empty lot next door to us. Could this interfere with any signals?

last week virgin media installed TV, Phone and BB. since then, my sons desktop windows vista will not connect to the internet and has local only connection via a Belkin adapter. The adapter has found the router but will not connect. Previous supplier, tiscali. A friend has tried to change the IP address, and still nothing. We have tried to uninstall Norton security, but the machine seems to want to hold onto it, and will not fully uninstall. I have another desktop, which is plugged into the router and that works fine. My laptop which is also Windows Vista, has connected perfectly well. I am seriously pulling my hair out as what to do next. bearing in mind i can navigate a computer but not very technical.

here is the setup, I have a Laptop with a wired 10/100/100 jack and a wireless card built in A/B/G. I have a wireless router at home that does B/G, I connect to it at G. The wireless router also has 5 10/100 ports on the back. From the wireless router I go into a cable modem, pretty standard setup so far, here is where gets fun. I have the option of "bundling" my download speeds and upload speeds with the installation of a 2nd cable modem. What I am unsure opf is how exactle this setup would work. Going to attach a pic and see what you all have in the way of advice: Basically, the 2 connections from the cable modems are 15down and 2up each, my cable company will allow me to combine the connections (they will set it up on their end) so I have 30down 4up, what I dont know is how top do it on MY end. I am attaching a word doc with a drawing to explain better. I am running Vista64 Ultimate w/sp1

I have a BIG problem with my wireless network. I have two PC, one with vista ultimate X64 sp1 and another with both the same vista version plus XP sp3 X86 installed. my wireless network is based on ASUS, one router (with vista support) and another WIFI adapter installed on my second PC and as you might guess my main PC is connected to the router via the standard cable. I using WPA2 with a 63 ASCII PSK and it just works well with my XP sp3 but simply when I log in to vista it can't connect to my router, Vista can find my WIFI singal and say that it has a Good-Excellent signal. I downloaded and installed the x64 version of driver for my WIFI Adapter from ASUS website and it seems it should work. I tried everything. checking password...make it shorter reading articles about netWORKING.

My family and i just got a new dell laptop with vista on it, but it will not connect to our home internet connection. We use a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, Model WRT54G. I've tried various guides and searched high and low for an answer. When I try to connect to the network Linksys, It says
'Windows cannot connect to Linksys'.
Then, it says
"Make sure your computer is in range of "linksys" and that the network settings match the wireless router or access point settings"
All our other computers work fine with it, A laptop running XP, Our Home computer running XP, and even an iphone.
I'm not sure what that diagnostic is supposed to mean and I'm not familiar with vista at all.

I recently bought a new Linksys router ultra range plus. it can broadcast on n, g and b bands. My laptop has a "g" adapter. but after setting up the router i tried to connect to the router and only get "Local" connection. DHCP is enabled in my router but the "ipconfig /all" command on the laptop says it isnt. My room mates connect fine, one has a Mac and one has an HP running vista (not sure the version). When i connect via ethernet the internet works just fine. im leaning towards an adapter problem but im no pro in this field. iv updated the adapter drivers to the latest update (attempting to solve the problem).

Without getting into a rant here, I need to find out if there is any other device that I can use to connect the Xbox 360 wirelessly to my network... I refuse to pay ONE HUNDRED GREENBACKS to Microsoft for a simple wireless adapter.
Connecting the 360 to the router via wired is NOT even an option I am willing to discuss, you will just have to trust me that it would be a royal PITA if I were to got that route. I found another post in the Media Center and I will be doing that once I can get this box to hook up wireless w/o the need to sell one of my kids to buy the adapter

I am currently using a 64 bit vista home premium computer and I have a 32 bit router. I have a desktop and three other laptops that are connecting to the router perfectly, the fourth however isn't. It's a 32 bit router, so the fourth laptop which is my 64 bit vista won't connect or even pick up the wireless ping from the router. Is there a way to convert from a 64 bit to a 32 bit other then going out and buying a 32 bit computer?

HP TX1000 Laptop wouldn't auto connect to my wireless router (1 metre away). I remembered that on the bootup Wireless Assistant turned on Bluetooth but not Wireless. In the Network and Sharing Centre, "Manage Wireless Networks" isn't showing so I can't turn it on. In what may be a related issue, I can't get into Services - Vista says that either I don't have permission (I'm logged on as Administrator) or it can't find Windows/System32/Services.msc (which I can't see). I've done the obligiatory re-start and I've connected via cat5 but I need to resolve this

I just bought Windows Vista Home Basic to use on a MacBook, and created a partition using a program called BootCamp, which allows the use of Mac OS X as well as Windows XP or Vista. I installed Vista and was excited to use it but then I was unable to connect to the wireless router in my house. I'm not sure why, but the Mac OS X part of my computer is using the internet through the router, but the Windows Vista will not pick up the signal from the router. Does anyone have a similar problem or solution?

I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.
-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.

I am having problems getting a wireless internet connection for a friend who has just bought a new laptop with Windows Vista. He connects through a Netgear, wireless router however the network connection on the laptop shows as local connection ok however there is limited access due to no internet connection. The adapter has a router assigned IP address of 192.168.0.3. The gateway, DNS server and DHCP server address all show the 192.168.0.1. I have connected to the admin console on the router and the router has been assigned a public address and DNS address from the ISP (AOL ADSL).
I disabled encryption and mac authentication incase for some reason this would be causing it but its still the same. He has a desktop PC hard wired to the router and this connects without any problems. The IPConfig of the adapter is much the same as the wireless adapter on the laptop with exception of the IP address which is 192.168.0.2. I can get a connection to the internet if I hard wire the laptop however when connecting wireless it once again gets a local intranet connection but no internet. I can ping the local network and the gateway but nothing beyond the gateway.
I have done the usual things in the way of power cycling the router/modem and disabling/repairing network connections etc. I recall having the same problem around 2 months ago for another friend. They were using a cable modem with an Actiontec router. I did as I did above and even tried 2 different routers with no change. My XP laptop connects fine.

My Home network setup consists of the following....
In one room. 1 x laptop running XP Home, connected to the internet via
a linksys wireless router, and modem.
In another room, I have this laptop, Acer Aspire, running Vista
Business, and has wireless.
When I connected up my router (given to me by a family member, no
software, just router, and mains adapter), and switched on my Acer
laptop in the other room, I was able to connect to my Linksys Router,
and gain access to the internet without any security whatsoever, no wep
key or anything.
Now i know most people with problems have issues with not being able to
connect to the internet because of a wep key lost or alike.
My issue is, i would like to add security to my network to stop other
people in my building gaining access, or using my connection without my
permission.
I can also connect my mobile phone to my home wireless network, and
again, no wep key is asked for, which is quite worrying.

I have a local network with 4 Vista boxes and one XP box, and despite all of our efforts the internet crashes frequently and the router needs to be reset. The XP machine says that it is still connected during these times, but there is no data transfer.I am absolutely positive that this is an operating system-related issue because not only have we swapped out all of the cables, but we've also purchased a new router, and switched from local internet service to cable with absolutely no change in performance. This would be fine if it were one computer but all of the computers seem to crash simultaneously and we end up needing to unplug and replug in the router to get it to work. We've made a whole variety of changes in regards to our router setup etc, but I'm very convinced that the situation lies at the computer level.

As I've been enjoying Vista a LOT, I was looking in the Vista Tweaks section on Speedguide.net & found that MS Vista's new TCP IP stack has the ability to autotune broadband internet connections due to packet load and or router capabilities/defiencies (much like a "gamer" would be trying to do w/ proggies like TCP Optimizer) except that Vista can do this on the fly while you're surfing, playing MMOG's, etc. Speedguide noted that in Vista this is usually turned off by default but in Server 2008 this is turned on by default.
Now why would Redmond do that? I can understand why turning this on for server usage but I'm a big time online gamer & this ability caught my attention--do y'all know what it means to have a stable connection when you're in the middle of a big intense furball w/ a LOT of others trying to shoot you down? This kind of usage is very much like a server being pinged by LOTS of users trying to get their presentations, budgets, timesheets, projects, etc & IT checking the server as well because Joe can't get his presentation files to run off PowerPoint cause the server is too busy so they're in there checking for malicious "content" that may be using up needed resources....
So I went in & checked thru "elevated command prompt" & sure enough it was turned off. So I just went in & enabled it & set all up according to Speedguide's recommendations to see what Autotuning would do....All I can tell you is this:If you do a lot of online gaming you will WANT this on!Check it out at SpeedGuide.net :: Broadband · Cable · DSL · VoIP · Security · Network Tools I posted this here as I couldn't find any references to this tidbit here in this forum. Now if you just only surf the 'net & online shopping & such I really wouldn't bother w/ this as Vista's TCP IP stack in default configuration is more than enough.Hence why I posted this in the Gaming section.

I am totally noob when it comes to wireless, do all routers produce basically the same strength signal? Are some more long range than others?

My laptop (gateway) can connect to any network (public, private, wired or wireless) with no problem but no matter what it cannot connect to the internet. I've tried as much as possible but nothing resolves this error and my isp says because my other computers work fine they can't help me. I've recycled the router and the modem, tried to ping the router (unsuccessful), tried manually setting up my connection (ip address, dns, gateway), bought a new router (belkin enhanced wireless), bought a express card ethernet port, reset winsock, but nothing works! I honestly don't know what to do since this laptop didn't include a vista disc so i don't think i can wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows without paying for something i already have. If you need any further info just let me know i'll be checking my internet every hour as i'm at the end of my rope!
On the network connections page it shows an uninterrupted line to the network which it always says is unidentified (even networks with names) but there's always a red x preventing me from getting to the internet and when i do the auto repair and diagnose it tells me to call the isp or get help from a network administrator. This problem occured shortly after my norton 360 subscription ran out and i uninstalled it to install avira in it's place.

I have a Inspiron 350 and the Router is NETGEAR G-Wireless WGR61v10. My problem is since I had a reformat on the computer. It would not connect to the internet in fact it said Local or limited connection before I changed the channel where now lets me go on Google and surf is very limited and very slow. I can't log into my programs like MSN and Skype and only logs in when I restart the computer and drops the connection again. I would like to know how to unblock the connection so I can do everything again. I am just really frustrated and would like to know if there is a solution to get the net up and running again.

Bare with me, I am a bit computer illiterate. . .I use a linksys router (I don't exactly know what type/version, but I doubt that matters when I have connected to older models, I believe). However, the only reason why my internet will not connect seems to be that I have encrypted my router with a WEP key! I say this because I can connect to unsecured routers just fine.
I have tried connecting manually, and it will accept the WEP key I type in (well, it doesn't tell me I'm wrong). . . But once I finish typing in the WEP and checking the two option boxes (start this connection automatically, connect even if the network is not roadcasting) and try and connect (to the existing network), it says I cannot connect. I am just wondering if it's something simple. . . Making a new WEP key, perhaps? I really have no clue and I would like to figure this out soon.

1) I was online and suddenly I wasnt able to connect to the internet. I called my IP provider and they told me that I could "ping" but couldn't connect to the domain name, I have run a dianostic tool which said I had no dial tone but had local area connection. I went step by step with my IP provider and we still couldnt get it to work.
2) Last night I went to open a zip file using Zipeg (never had any problems til then) and now on the desktop all my programs are opening with notepad, I cannot access my files on the desktop. When I open the files, I get a notepad with all these symbols and numbers and thats it!

When I first plugged his comp in & installed the Netgear router from the disk, the install screwed up in that his comp was getting the internet cause it was plugged via ethernet, but the rest of the house couldn't cause there was no wireless signal. Also shown by the wireless light not being on on the router, but all the other were, power, LAN port4, & internet.

My laptop (Vista Ultimate x64) got hit by a malware recently, removed it and is now clean. But after cleaning (malwarebytes) and doing a registry repair (using advanced systemcare pro), i was not able to connect to the internet. When i checked Device, the "Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)" had a yellow astrix to it. I tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing the driver from the cd. But still the yellow astrix remains and the internet does not work. I tried uninstalling the driver - rebooting - reinstalling - rebooting - still same result. let me know what i should do to make the internet work. I really don't want to do a reinstall of the OS again - have a lot of programs and would be a pain to reinstall each of them.

Once I open IE7 or FF it will not connect to the internet. No other apps work via internet either. I've disconnected the cable modem and rebooted and still get the same thing. Once I hit the "check for solution" on the IE screen, it says my connection is fine. I've tried this setup on my 2nd HD on the computer (XP) and it works great. Why is it my Vista 64 setup isn't working correctly. I've looked through my ipconfig/all command. I've virus checked (and safe boot w/check). I am in serious debt to whomever can help me. I've looked and looked and I haven't found anything that helps. I really do not want to format just for this one issue. Is there something in the Event Viewer I could pull up and see what's going on, or post my config?
