Broadband Internet Connection Router Capabilities

Jul 28, 2008

As I've been enjoying Vista a LOT, I was looking in the Vista Tweaks section on Speedguide.net & found that MS Vista's new TCP IP stack has the ability to autotune broadband internet connections due to packet load and or router capabilities/defiencies (much like a "gamer" would be trying to do w/ proggies like TCP Optimizer) except that Vista can do this on the fly while you're surfing, playing MMOG's, etc. Speedguide noted that in Vista this is usually turned off by default but in Server 2008 this is turned on by default.

Now why would Redmond do that? I can understand why turning this on for server usage but I'm a big time online gamer & this ability caught my attention--do y'all know what it means to have a stable connection when you're in the middle of a big intense furball w/ a LOT of others trying to shoot you down? This kind of usage is very much like a server being pinged by LOTS of users trying to get their presentations, budgets, timesheets, projects, etc & IT checking the server as well because Joe can't get his presentation files to run off PowerPoint cause the server is too busy so they're in there checking for malicious "content" that may be using up needed resources....

So I went in & checked thru "elevated command prompt" & sure enough it was turned off. So I just went in & enabled it & set all up according to Speedguide's recommendations to see what Autotuning would do....All I can tell you is this:If you do a lot of online gaming you will WANT this on!Check it out at SpeedGuide.net :: Broadband · Cable · DSL · VoIP · Security · Network Tools I posted this here as I couldn't find any references to this tidbit here in this forum. Now if you just only surf the 'net & online shopping & such I really wouldn't bother w/ this as Vista's TCP IP stack in default configuration is more than enough.Hence why I posted this in the Gaming section.

Connection To Router But Not The Internet

Mar 23, 2008

I am having problems getting a wireless internet connection for a friend who has just bought a new laptop with Windows Vista. He connects through a Netgear, wireless router however the network connection on the laptop shows as local connection ok however there is limited access due to no internet connection. The adapter has a router assigned IP address of 192.168.0.3. The gateway, DNS server and DHCP server address all show the 192.168.0.1. I have connected to the admin console on the router and the router has been assigned a public address and DNS address from the ISP (AOL ADSL).

I disabled encryption and mac authentication incase for some reason this would be causing it but its still the same. He has a desktop PC hard wired to the router and this connects without any problems. The IPConfig of the adapter is much the same as the wireless adapter on the laptop with exception of the IP address which is 192.168.0.2. I can get a connection to the internet if I hard wire the laptop however when connecting wireless it once again gets a local intranet connection but no internet. I can ping the local network and the gateway but nothing beyond the gateway.

I have done the usual things in the way of power cycling the router/modem and disabling/repairing network connections etc. I recall having the same problem around 2 months ago for another friend. They were using a cable modem with an Actiontec router. I did as I did above and even tried 2 different routers with no change. My XP laptop connects fine.

Internet Connection, Via Wireless Router, But Not WEP Protected

Mar 23, 2008

My Home network setup consists of the following....

In one room. 1 x laptop running XP Home, connected to the internet via
a linksys wireless router, and modem.

In another room, I have this laptop, Acer Aspire, running Vista
Business, and has wireless.

When I connected up my router (given to me by a family member, no
software, just router, and mains adapter), and switched on my Acer
laptop in the other room, I was able to connect to my Linksys Router,
and gain access to the internet without any security whatsoever, no wep
key or anything.

Now i know most people with problems have issues with not being able to
connect to the internet because of a wep key lost or alike.

My issue is, i would like to add security to my network to stop other
people in my building gaining access, or using my connection without my
permission.

I can also connect my mobile phone to my home wireless network, and
again, no wep key is asked for, which is quite worrying.

Bad Connection W/ Broadband PPPoE Connection

May 2, 2010

I have a strange problem. I have AOL broadband and I'd like to connect to the internet without using the infamous bloated AOL software. I know how to do that using Vistas' "set up connection or network" wizard and I can successfully log in using by username and password. The problem is the connection is very poor when I use this method. The speed tests show the correct speed and downloads are full speed but pages seemingly randomly do not load (for long stretches of several minutes). For example my home page does not load ("page cannot load" error), google does not load, some pages load but not fully with many errors.

This isnt a browser issue (I tried firefox, IE, chrome), this isn't a modem/router issue (I have a laptop that works fine with a permanently logged in router), it's not an AOL issue I can still log in fine with AOL software and then browse fine with firefox, it's not a hardware issue, and it's not a firewall issue (it's off). Therefore it must be an issue with the way windows connects to my modem when using the built in PPPoE broadband connection. I really have no idea what could be wrong. Maybe one of you do?

Lost Broadband Connection

Aug 29, 2007

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 OEM on a Q6600+4gb ram+Asus P5N-E SLI. My favourite browser is Firefox and I installed version 2.0.0.4 and it runs fine. However I got prompted to upgrade to version 2.0.0.6 and when I did I lost my broadband connection completely. I've tried it several times and the same thing happens every time. Obviously I have disabled the update prompt and am running version 2.0.0.4 but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if there is a way round it. I've tried to get onto mozillas forums but it keeps telling me I have typed in the fuzzy letter test thingy wrongly! Once again I've tried several times and been extra careful but they still won't let me register.

Do you think that is Sprint's fault or something in my Vista settings causing this. Probably Sprint as I CAN access it using Cox. But I want to make sure before I call them....

Internet Users Dislike Broadband Cap

Oct 3, 2008

Surprise! Internet Users Dislike Broadband CapWritten by Kevin Parrish - 2:20 AM - October 2, 2008. It’s no secret that internet service providers are considering Broadband caps to cut down costs. However many U.S. consumers dislike the idea and will gladly change carriers if their current BSP implements the restrictions.

ZoomIn Zeugma Systems’ recent survey conducted for the International Data Corporation (source), 81 percent of the 787 U.S. customers polled proclaimed their dislike for a Bandwidth cap and the additional charges for internet use beyond the limit. However, 83 percent had no idea what a gigabyte was or just how much bandwidth they actually consume. 51 percent of those polled added that they would actually switch service providers if broadband caps were set in place. Some even claimed to actually pay for additional premium services if necessary.

"These results are both an opportunity and a warning for BSPs," said Kevin Walsh, Zeugma Systems vice president of marketing. "The opportunity is that consumers are signaling a willingness to pay more for dedicated bandwidth over and above basic high speed internet for such services as premium internet video, VOIP, gaming, and corporate VPN access. The warning is a clear distaste for bandwidth caps. At a minimum, providers moving forward with bandwidth capping schemes may want to consider a more intelligent and flexible application of caps.”

Starting today, Comcast residential customers are now limited to 250 GB per month. The company claims that the new limit is more than enough for its customers, and will more than likely never surpass the limit. But considering the consumers who purchases games and movies online, this restriction may feel more like a punishment than means to save money on behalf of the BSP. Online Gamers may face the largest setback, especially those playing on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service or MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and EverQuest II. Read more at the Source: Surprise! Netgear Router Connection

Mar 15, 2009

I have the most basic of basic Netgear wireless routers (WGR614), yet I still can't set this dang thing up! I am trying to set up two computers that are literally side by side. I go through the set up, it acknowledges the internet connection, then it asks for the login/password for my connection. I don't have one via my provider ("Qwest) as I simply ran through their install disk and it's ready to roll, no sign in, etc.

I've read quite a bit about this, so I thought maybe it wasn't directed at my providers sign in, and instaed used the general sign in 'admin' and 'password' that work on virtually all Netgear units. No go. I also tried the login of '1234', which is used for older routers (which this is not), but that didn't work either. I am obviously using wires, as there is no need to go wireless. What am I doing wrong? All my wiring is correct.

Suddenly Cannot Connect To Internet Thru Wireless Router

Laptop has no problems connecting. Internal network device shows as working properly. Network is there - available to choose and connect to with all green bars but attempts to connect and diagnose suggest "low wireless signal quality." All recommendations have been followed to connect but nothing has worked. Computer is less than 1 year old. Is it possible that an updated driver for the wireless adapter would help? I am going to humiliate myself and ask the stupidest question ever - the same day it quit working, some very large construction equipment was parked in an empty lot next door to us. Could this interfere with any signals?

Internet Crashes Frequently Router Reset

Jun 23, 2008

I have a local network with 4 Vista boxes and one XP box, and despite all of our efforts the internet crashes frequently and the router needs to be reset. The XP machine says that it is still connected during these times, but there is no data transfer.I am absolutely positive that this is an operating system-related issue because not only have we swapped out all of the cables, but we've also purchased a new router, and switched from local internet service to cable with absolutely no change in performance. This would be fine if it were one computer but all of the computers seem to crash simultaneously and we end up needing to unplug and replug in the router to get it to work. We've made a whole variety of changes in regards to our router setup etc, but I'm very convinced that the situation lies at the computer level.

Software RAID 5 Capabilities, Can't Play

Mar 26, 2009

I want to purchase 4 1 TB disks to be used as DVD storage on my Vista 64 machine. I want to basically rip all my DVD's to my computer so that I can share them via Media Center to my kids (who have a tendancy to watch DVD's until they can't be played any longer and ruin them with their finger prints.) and so I don't have to get out of my chair to put in a movie any more. I figure that creating a RAID 5 configuration would be best since I can use three disks to create the RAID 5 and have one hot spare. (you work in the IT field long enough, you realize that hard drives are the most unreliable part of a computer:-))

My mother board supports this, but I really don't want to use the Hardware raid since I would have to put my primary drive into a raid 0 configuration which would mean re-installing Vista and using the drivers on my mother boards cdrom when it comes to installing drivers for the controller. I was wondering if Vista even has this capability before I shell out $400 for the disks. Since nothing else will be written to the RAID other than the movies, I'm not too worried about write performance. My main question is does Vista 64 Ultimate support RAID 5 configurations, or should I bite the bullet, and make it a hardware RAID5?

Losing Internet Connection

May 15, 2010

This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now. Namely the dropping of the internet. I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX". At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet". Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.

The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period. To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC. I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience

SP1 Causes Problems With Internet Connection

Apr 15, 2008

After installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 I lost my internet connection. I kept trying to open various websites in Internet Explorer and eventually I was able to download partial, sometimes even complete web pages, although IE wasn't displaying them, presumably because various resources on the page weren't downloaded yet (I used View Source in the empty browser window to see what it had downloaded up until that point and in most cases it was only half of a web page). Some sites began to work all of the time, such as Google.com, while other sites didn't work at all, like Microsoft.com.

I persisted to keep trying to connect to various web sites, assuming that it was just a major coincidence that my network connection was failing at the same exact time that I installed SP1, but after several hours now I'm still having the same exact problem and some research has turned up that I'm certainly not the only person to experience internet connection issues due to having installed SP1.
