Wireless Broadband: Connect To Internet Lose Network
Jul 5, 2008
I have VIRGIN wireless broadband with a Huwai e220 modem. It is connected to my Windows Vista Ultimate desktop PC via USB. I also have a small network comprising 1 x Linux Mandriva PC, 1 x Linux Mint PC, and an old desktop without g/card, monitor, mouse or k/board that I use to store files. My problem is that whenever I connect to the internet I lose my network. When I try to change the settings in the "network and sharing centre" i can get my network but no internet! I hav etried every possible combination of settings that i can do without being able to have both. The strange ting is that sometimes when I connect it all works for about 3 minutes then it falls over!

I have 3 computers in home: 1 is connected via Ethernet to DSL and D-Link wireless router, and is running Vista Home Premium. I can connect to Internet fine on 1.
2 is on my wireless network running XP. It connects to Internet just fine.
3 runs Vista Home Premium, but I cannot connect to the Internet. You can see the wireless network with a strong signal, but the connection is Local. If I remove WPA and make the network unsecured, I can connect to the Internet. If I plug in an Ethernet cable in this computer and into a port on the router, I can connect to the Internet. I checked ipconfig and it shows for the wireless network that there is no default gateway, and the user ID does not show like it does when I run ipconfig with the network unsecured.

I have a issue with my Linksys wireless USB adapter. I am trying to use it with Vista Home Premium. After installing software... I plug the adapter in (like directions say) and windows update goes to work. It updates the driver, installs correctly, I then connect to my home network and all is good. My prob is for some reason I lose internet and the USB adapter itself. One time I switched users and lost all. I have tried uninstalling adapter and tried reinstalling by pointing to my D drive (install CD) in hopes of using the driver that's on the installation CD. as soon as it saw everything.. windows update once again gave me the same buggy driver. I have tried to install with UAC disabled... no luck... the Linksys website/support for drivers has the same updated driver. I tried to use an older one but Windows keeps forcing this updated one down my
throat.

When I take the laptop to work I can see the wireless network but can't connect. After trying to diagnose the problem, it says it can't and I should see if I'm in range (I am), or if I have permission (I do).

I just received my HP laptop with wireless internet, yet I cannot connect to the internet. I am using a linksys wrt54g version 2 router. I already have a number of computers already connected wirelessly to this router with no issues. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong with this new computer. This is my first computer with Vista, so I'm a bit rusty with the set up.

I have a BIG problem with my wireless network. I have two PC, one with vista ultimate X64 sp1 and another with both the same vista version plus XP sp3 X86 installed. my wireless network is based on ASUS, one router (with vista support) and another WIFI adapter installed on my second PC and as you might guess my main PC is connected to the router via the standard cable. I using WPA2 with a 63 ASCII PSK and it just works well with my XP sp3 but simply when I log in to vista it can't connect to my router, Vista can find my WIFI singal and say that it has a Good-Excellent signal. I downloaded and installed the x64 version of driver for my WIFI Adapter from ASUS website and it seems it should work. I tried everything. checking password...make it shorter reading articles about netWORKING.

My vista laptop originally connected to the internet through a mac wireless network, but once i restarted, it will now only connect as a local network and I can't access the internet. If I look at the 'Network and Sharing Center' on the Vista laptop it says that the laptop is connected to the network, which is connected to the gateway, but the gateway is not connected to the internet. At the same time, I have an XP desktop with the same problem, but 3 mac computers can connect to the internet with no problems.

I am running Vista x64 on a wireless network, WPA, TKIP. The network connects and works fine when you connect manually, but even if you check the "automatically connect" checkbox, after turning off the computer you have to connect manually again and the checkbox is unchecked. Had an XP machine with wireless before and this was never a problem. Have a Vista x32 connected with Ethernet cable that has no problem getting on network automatically either. Router is WRT54GS (I know it's old), but my computer is not totally incompatible if I get a good connection and good speed on the network. Seems that I am not the only one having this problem on this forum, but the other cases seemed somewhat different?

" No operation can be performed on wireless network connection while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on bluetooth network connection while it has its media disconnected. An error occured while releasing interface loopback pseudo-interface1" On futher diagnoses i have notice that DHCP clinet service is stuck in the "STARTING" state. I am unable to stop and restart it. 32 bit Windows Vista Home and I have McAfee security. This as my sons laptop and he could not get the OS to start up. I done a system restore have since been able to log in. From that point I have tried to connect to the internet with a netgear wireless router WGR614 v6. I can establish a wireless connection, but I am unable to connect to IE. When trying to do so, I get internet explorer cannont display web page.
When I try diagnose connections I get the host may be down and windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically. I am running a pc with xp home through the netgear router with an ethernet cable so I know the internet connection is good. I have tried to connect in safe mode. I have done an ipconfig reset and a dns flush. I disabled my windows firewall and still have no luck.

Have a wireless router and cable modem on computer 2 in one bedroom. Suddenly computer 1 in another bedroom cannot connect to to internet. Worked fine until one morning. No settings were changed. Laptop has no problems connecting. Internal network device shows as working properly. Network is there - available to choose and connect to with all green bars but attempts to connect and diagnose suggest "low wireless signal quality." All recommendations have been followed to connect but nothing has worked. Computer is less than 1 year old. Is it possible that an updated driver for the wireless adapter would help? I am going to humiliate myself and ask the stupidest question ever - the same day it quit working, some very large construction equipment was parked in an empty lot next door to us. Could this interfere with any signals?

The hotel had me connect some sort of adapter to my usb port and also had their tech support change some networking settings on my computer. Now when I go to work and plug-in the usb cable to my computer nothing happens (used to connect to the internet).

The little internet icon, with the two computers and a picture of the world, the world would randomly disappear which causes my computer to not respond to the internet.

My laptop is unable to connect to the internet and I think the problem is that I have a virus so I'm just going to reformat the whole thing. I want to send my laptop files to my PC, but when I go to the network and sharing center on the laptop to turn public folder sharing on, the whole window just freezes when I apply the setting. The workgroup names are the same. Is there anything else that I have to do to be able to share the files?

I have started to notice a lot of vista systems that are connected direct to cable modems saying not connected to internet or showing unidentified network. You cannot create a new connection, because the create a connection is for PPPoE only, (which is not very smart). And when the browser gives you the option to connect, it asks for name/password for a PPPoE connection.
1. How do I get the Vista networking to recognize the fact is has a direct connection to the Internet?
2. How can you create a new connection without it defaulting to PPPoE?
3. Is there any way to force Vista to simply connect to a network, if the network is available, and has been checked with other computers as working properly, and Network discovery is on, and vista simply says unknown network?........

I am having trouble with my wireless internet. When i was home over the Christmas break, I attempted to forward my port on my wireless internet at home so my router would allow me to access some of my programs (the router had a firewall on it blocking these programs). Ever since then, the only place i can access wireless internet is only at my house, nowhere ele. When i go other places, I can find connections and connect to them, but i can only connect to the network part of it, not the internet. For example, when I go to the Network and Sharing Center, it will show the connection between my computer and the network working properly, but then the line between the Network and the Internet has a Red X through it and the Internet Globe is grey. When i troubleshoot, it says it cannot contact my server / ISP, and it shows that the ISP is the one from my wireless at home.

I've just recently encountered a problem connecting to the internet with my notebook and when I check to see what was wrong my computer says I'm not connected to any networks. So when I try to connect my computer doesn't show my wireless network it says a cable is not plugged into the network adapter 'local area connection". However everything is plugged in and my mom's notebook has no problem. Also it says that my computer doesn't have a wireless adapter installed and configured but it does and when I go to the properties it says the device is working properly. I don't know what to do anymore. I've restarted my computer and unplugged and replugged the cable and disabled and enabled the adapter.

it's possible and economical to have wireless broadband without having a fixed land line connected because i'm sick of paying the line rental on a phone that i just about never use. I sometimes think we pay through the nose for communication that's not really up to speed in Australia.

Surprise! Internet Users Dislike Broadband CapWritten by Kevin Parrish - 2:20 AM - October 2, 2008. It’s no secret that internet service providers are considering Broadband caps to cut down costs. However many U.S. consumers dislike the idea and will gladly change carriers if their current BSP implements the restrictions.
ZoomIn Zeugma Systems’ recent survey conducted for the International Data Corporation (source), 81 percent of the 787 U.S. customers polled proclaimed their dislike for a Bandwidth cap and the additional charges for internet use beyond the limit. However, 83 percent had no idea what a gigabyte was or just how much bandwidth they actually consume. 51 percent of those polled added that they would actually switch service providers if broadband caps were set in place. Some even claimed to actually pay for additional premium services if necessary.
"These results are both an opportunity and a warning for BSPs," said Kevin Walsh, Zeugma Systems vice president of marketing. "The opportunity is that consumers are signaling a willingness to pay more for dedicated bandwidth over and above basic high speed internet for such services as premium internet video, VOIP, gaming, and corporate VPN access. The warning is a clear distaste for bandwidth caps. At a minimum, providers moving forward with bandwidth capping schemes may want to consider a more intelligent and flexible application of caps.”
Starting today, Comcast residential customers are now limited to 250 GB per month. The company claims that the new limit is more than enough for its customers, and will more than likely never surpass the limit. But considering the consumers who purchases games and movies online, this restriction may feel more like a punishment than means to save money on behalf of the BSP. Online Gamers may face the largest setback, especially those playing on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service or MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and EverQuest II. Read more at the Source: Surprise! As I've been enjoying Vista a LOT, I was looking in the Vista Tweaks section on Speedguide.net & found that MS Vista's new TCP IP stack has the ability to autotune broadband internet connections due to packet load and or router capabilities/defiencies (much like a "gamer" would be trying to do w/ proggies like TCP Optimizer) except that Vista can do this on the fly while you're surfing, playing MMOG's, etc. Speedguide noted that in Vista this is usually turned off by default but in Server 2008 this is turned on by default.
Now why would Redmond do that? I can understand why turning this on for server usage but I'm a big time online gamer & this ability caught my attention--do y'all know what it means to have a stable connection when you're in the middle of a big intense furball w/ a LOT of others trying to shoot you down? This kind of usage is very much like a server being pinged by LOTS of users trying to get their presentations, budgets, timesheets, projects, etc & IT checking the server as well because Joe can't get his presentation files to run off PowerPoint cause the server is too busy so they're in there checking for malicious "content" that may be using up needed resources....
So I went in & checked thru "elevated command prompt" & sure enough it was turned off. So I just went in & enabled it & set all up according to Speedguide's recommendations to see what Autotuning would do....All I can tell you is this:If you do a lot of online gaming you will WANT this on!Check it out at SpeedGuide.net :: Broadband · Cable · DSL · VoIP · Security · Network Tools I posted this here as I couldn't find any references to this tidbit here in this forum. Now if you just only surf the 'net & online shopping & such I really wouldn't bother w/ this as Vista's TCP IP stack in default configuration is more than enough.Hence why I posted this in the Gaming section.

I have a Vista Business laptop which I connect to the internet via wireless, and need to VPN to my company. I have created a VPN connection and it works until I'm connected to my company server. I then , and the Network and Sharing Center shows both connections as Local Only. If I disconnect the VPN, internet access is restored. It seems Vista cannot cope with two connections to different networks!
