Wireless Broadband Without Having A Fixed Land Line Connected

Mar 23, 2008

it's possible and economical to have wireless broadband without having a fixed land line connected because i'm sick of paying the line rental on a phone that i just about never use. I sometimes think we pay through the nose for communication that's not really up to speed in Australia.

Wireless Zero Configuration Still Not Fixed In SP1

Mar 23, 2008

This message is in regards to the Wireless Zero Configuration not being fixed in SP1. This is a serious issue for multiplayer gaming enthusiasts who play wirelessly. This system causes a lag spike in games that lasts between 1-3 seconds and reoccurs EVERY 60 SECONDS. This is unacceptable! This makes playing games over a wireless connection completely unbearable!

The problem goes like this. Every 60 seconds, via Wlan autoconfig (WZC), my computer (and ANY computer using Vista and wireless connection) attempts to find the best connection. During this time period, if you're doing something intensive with your connection such as playing a game, the connection spikes and causes an intermission between your game and the server you're playing on because your connection is being temporarily interrupted. There are no options to stop WZC from doing this. Manually disabling Wlan autoconfig causes you to be shut out from connecting to the internet at all........

Fixed USB Wireless Mouse Not Recognized

Dec 25, 2009

I note that a common subject here is the problem of USB wireless mice not being recognized by computers. For what it's worth the following is my experience. This evening my 3 year old Logitech wireless mouse just stopped working, abruptly, and I started getting repeated messages of an unknown USB device even with nothing attached. I tried the mouse on two other computers...it worked fine. I tried a system restore from yesterday with no results. I followed the advice offered on other threads to delete USB ports and reboot...no go. Still weird behavior. I noted that one person with a similar problem turned off notebook and removed and reinstalled battery...whalla! It works. The mouse now functions and no more strange messages. I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a Sony Vaio notebook.

My problem is that whenever I connect to the internet I lose my network. When I try to change the settings in the "network and sharing centre" i can get my network but no internet! I hav etried every possible combination of settings that i can do without being able to have both. The strange ting is that sometimes when I connect it all works for about 3 minutes then it falls over!

Wireless Available But Not Connected

Dec 24, 2007

I went home for the Christmas break and I am trying to get my laptop to connect to the network back at my house. I set up a wireless network through the main computer and have found nothing but problems. The main computer is running XP and I am running Vista. Now, the problem is my computer will detect there is a wireless network available but it will not connect. It let me enter in a password to connect but it tells me there isn't enough strength to connect. This makes no sense due to the fact that it will display 90% network strength.

Wireless Can't Connected

Apr 14, 2009

I'm re-posting this because it is only visible online at the MS website, not on NewsReaders so.... (I'll try again)...I just installed a D-Link DIR-625 router, before, we had a Linksys router with no issues whatsoever. (This is in secure WPA mode, there is no problem in "unsecure" mode) My sons PC has Vista installed. He has a D-Link wireless usb adaptor. Before, with the Linksys router, hookup was as would be expected, find the SSID, click, a prompt for passphrase, sweet. Now what happens is this... I right click the network icon in the taskbar and select "Connect to a network" a list of available networks shows.( as usual) I click our SSID and a different message appears than before, instead of getting the usual prompt for a simple passphrase, I get a "Windows needs more credentials to connect to this network", I click it and then a window appears prompting for...

Username
Password
Domain pass

this is not an option suitable for the usual WPA Personal encryption, first off there is no user name, no domain, its just WPA personal, TKIP,passphrase... what can I do? like I said it connects fine if no encryption is used. and it worked fine Lo these last 2 years with a Linksys WRT54G I'm not very familiar with Vista, I'm an XP man myself (I and my wife have XP, router installed on mine)(My wife has windows XP with a Linksys adaptor and it works fine so I know it is a Vista conflict)

Wireless Can't Connected: 1394 Connections 1-3

I just setup a wireless USB adapter on my sister's PC. It worked fine, until she rebooted. Now she can't get on the internet. The wireless signal is excellent at 100%, but browsers aren't connecting. I looked in Network Connections, and there's 4 networks. 1394 Connections 1-3. Connections 1 & 2 are doing nothing, but 3 is the one showing the wireless connection (and it looks to be working fine). The fourth network is Local Area Connection, which is doing nothing. What can I do to fix this?

Printer Connected To Wireless Router Does Not Print

Mar 23, 2008

i am trying to make a wireless connection from my sony vaio laptop, running vista business, to a printer (canon pixma ip4300) connected via usb to the print server of my wireless router (siemens gigaset SE551). i installed the printer as a 'local' printer on a tcp/ip address, as per the router manual - admittedly, the manual instructions were for winxp.

the problem: the printer comes up in vista as 'offline', cannot be changed to online, and won't print. documents appear in the print queue but do not print out - only sometimes when i restart the computer, the printer prints out a page or two of whatever the last failed job was. the same wireless setup with my old sony xp pro laptop works perfectly, and the printer works when connected to the vista laptop directly via usb cable, so the problem must be vista... i've turned off win defender and win firewall to no avail.

should i install the printer as a network printer? i have tried this but windows couldn't see the printer - it could see the router, but not the printer connected to it. but i've never setup a networked printer before so maybe there is something simple i'm missing.

Anyone know if SP1 or any update will fix Vista for computer with more than 2 gig of ram ? Ive downloaded the window update 929777 but it did not fix anything and im still running with 2gig of ram. Kinda sucks to have 2gig of ram laying on my desk.

Command Failed To Execute Fixed

May 21, 2009

Windows Vista/32 bit/Home Premium. I installed IE8, started getting "command failed to execute" when I tried to open an attachment in my Hotmail (old style not Live) on MSN Premium with MSN Explorer. They would open in Live. I like the old stuff because it's easier to use for me. I read the threads to uninstall IE8. I did and problem fixed. Go to microsoft.com, click on the support tab, click IE Solution Center, click How to uninstall IE8, click Microsoft Fix It.

If it goes to your Download Manager, run it fro there after it downloads. Restart and check as it tells you to see that it uninstalled. Hope this works for you also. You'd think Microsoft could put a package together that would work with their own systems.... I have another problem that no one seems to know how to fix, had a recommendation to go to Mozilla Firefox.

Snipping Tool Fixed Via Office Diagnostics

Nov 22, 2009

I have been searching for a way to get my Snipping tool back in my vistax64 system. It started with the common errors saying there is a problem and to restart and so on. I installed a Wacom Bamboo tablet on a Vista x86 laptop and a x64 Desktop both SP2. The laptop has had no issues and the x64 desktop ran the snipper fine for months afterwords but eventually lost the tool's functionality. So do not blame the Wacom in my case. I say this because I have read elsewhere it was a suspect cause.

After reading about some folks doing an Office 2007 Office diagnostics from the Outlook Help menu I tried it and it worked but there is a different behaivor. I have dual displays and before it went bad it would open up in one display but now it opens the selection area across both displays. That's OK with me, I just wanted to report.

Sound Distortion, Crackling, Poping, And Other Abnormalities FIXED

Apr 7, 2009

i had a major issue w/ my sound, and finally just figured out what was causing the problem. i wanted to share this following information with any of you that might find themselves losing sleep, dumbfounded, and/or otherwise unable to find help elsewhere (i couldn't find anything on this particular issue!).

the issue: sound distortion, crackling, poping, and other abnormalities w/ sound.

let's break this down fast:

my system:

- windows vista premium home edition 64-bit (6.0, build 6001) service pack 1

- evga geforce gtx 260 over-clocked edition graphics card (drivers: 7.15.0011.8250)

- 640gb westren digital hard drive

- intel core i7 cpu 940mhz

- gigabyte ex58-ud4p (bios version: 6.00pg) motherboard

- soundblaster x-fi xtreme audio pci edition (driver version: 5.12.0001.2007)

background info:

i had a clean installation of windows vista (3rd installation after testing w/ another hard drive, and confirming my hardware wasn't causing my sound issues), all microsoft's recommended/critical updates installed, all motherboard drivers installed, and so forth. clean sparkling new system, sound was working great, and then as i was installing other programs .....the sound problem/issue returned (see above for details)

the resolution:

if you own a gigabyte motherboard (newer!), and have installed gigabyte's dynamic energy saver software, and have it enabled through bios + the program ....then this can cause issues w/ your sound!

immediately upon disabling the program's features (which i had previously manually enabled myself), all my sound distortion, crackling, and poping issues disappeared! gone! problem solved! once again all my music, videos, Internet.com videos, etc have returned to working/sounding flawless!

so, if you are out there, and facing similar issues with sound under the same circumstances/hardware i have, then check to see if that's what's causing it! i hope this helps others like myself!

who'd of thought that would be the issue behind a sound problem. this almost drove me insane! anyhow, good luck and happy computing everyone! *salute!*

Display On Desktop Of Broadband Speeds.

If I'm not in the right group I apologise in advance.

Broadband speeds. I know it's easy to learn what the current speed at a
particular moment is by using one of the many people on the web providong
that service. What I cannot find and would find useful if I had it would be a
display - rather like the clock at the bottom RH corner, for instance. A
display that would show constantly what the speed is, or failing that, by
reacting to the cursor being on it.

Internet Users Dislike Broadband Cap

Oct 3, 2008

Surprise! Internet Users Dislike Broadband CapWritten by Kevin Parrish - 2:20 AM - October 2, 2008. It’s no secret that internet service providers are considering Broadband caps to cut down costs. However many U.S. consumers dislike the idea and will gladly change carriers if their current BSP implements the restrictions.

ZoomIn Zeugma Systems’ recent survey conducted for the International Data Corporation (source), 81 percent of the 787 U.S. customers polled proclaimed their dislike for a Bandwidth cap and the additional charges for internet use beyond the limit. However, 83 percent had no idea what a gigabyte was or just how much bandwidth they actually consume. 51 percent of those polled added that they would actually switch service providers if broadband caps were set in place. Some even claimed to actually pay for additional premium services if necessary.

"These results are both an opportunity and a warning for BSPs," said Kevin Walsh, Zeugma Systems vice president of marketing. "The opportunity is that consumers are signaling a willingness to pay more for dedicated bandwidth over and above basic high speed internet for such services as premium internet video, VOIP, gaming, and corporate VPN access. The warning is a clear distaste for bandwidth caps. At a minimum, providers moving forward with bandwidth capping schemes may want to consider a more intelligent and flexible application of caps.”

Starting today, Comcast residential customers are now limited to 250 GB per month. The company claims that the new limit is more than enough for its customers, and will more than likely never surpass the limit. But considering the consumers who purchases games and movies online, this restriction may feel more like a punishment than means to save money on behalf of the BSP. Online Gamers may face the largest setback, especially those playing on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service or MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and EverQuest II. Read more at the Source: Surprise! Broadband Internet Connection Router Capabilities

Jul 28, 2008

As I've been enjoying Vista a LOT, I was looking in the Vista Tweaks section on Speedguide.net & found that MS Vista's new TCP IP stack has the ability to autotune broadband internet connections due to packet load and or router capabilities/defiencies (much like a "gamer" would be trying to do w/ proggies like TCP Optimizer) except that Vista can do this on the fly while you're surfing, playing MMOG's, etc. Speedguide noted that in Vista this is usually turned off by default but in Server 2008 this is turned on by default.

Now why would Redmond do that? I can understand why turning this on for server usage but I'm a big time online gamer & this ability caught my attention--do y'all know what it means to have a stable connection when you're in the middle of a big intense furball w/ a LOT of others trying to shoot you down? This kind of usage is very much like a server being pinged by LOTS of users trying to get their presentations, budgets, timesheets, projects, etc & IT checking the server as well because Joe can't get his presentation files to run off PowerPoint cause the server is too busy so they're in there checking for malicious "content" that may be using up needed resources....

So I went in & checked thru "elevated command prompt" & sure enough it was turned off. So I just went in & enabled it & set all up according to Speedguide's recommendations to see what Autotuning would do....All I can tell you is this:If you do a lot of online gaming you will WANT this on!Check it out at SpeedGuide.net :: Broadband · Cable · DSL · VoIP · Security · Network Tools I posted this here as I couldn't find any references to this tidbit here in this forum. Now if you just only surf the 'net & online shopping & such I really wouldn't bother w/ this as Vista's TCP IP stack in default configuration is more than enough.Hence why I posted this in the Gaming section.
