View 9 RepliesI don't want to be perceived as Vista basher. There're severe issues in it comparing to old WinXP - but my and many others reason to blast them publicly is NOT to harm something that's already dead, lyino on the floor & everyone kicking it like a dead horse - "dead horse" here means Vista. It's the past. The future is Windows7 and we're just making sure problems don't get inherited! What's wrong with Vista can't be fixed by Vista ServicePacks, nobody cares anymore, Win7 is the only thing I personally care for. Now here's another feature in Vista I actaully like, it was either missing or I didn't notice in WinXP. I listed several other great features, but here's one more:
I know DOS command prompt by heart, and since I am no longer young it's something that new generation often is unclear about. I can achieve many tasks faster by issuing commands and don't need any help files, I've been doing it since late 80's. Now with Power Shell it's a new level. This is a great continuation of command-driven interface. Also when renaming files in WinExplorer Vista doesn't select .Extension by default - more convenient than WinXP where I was annoyed by constant extesnion retyping. But a few great features still don't offset the fact Vista was a fiasco.
If you’re using Internet Explorer to read this it might be an idea to shut it down now and open up trusty old FireFox instead. Microsoft has today issued an alert to notify users of a critical security flaw in IE.7.0 that could allow hackers to take control of your computer and steal passwords. The company is apparently preparing an emergency patch to fix it but in the meantime simply requests that users remain ‘vigilant’ against the threat.Microsoft advisors actually ask that you don’t switch because they are trying to get it resolved as soon as possible.
Of course it couldn’t be seen to recommend else’s software, but this doesn’t show much consideration for people’s security concerns. Trend Micro security advisor Rick Ferguson is free from such restraint: “In this case, hackers found the hole before Microsoft did, this is never a good thing. What we’ve seen from the exploit so far is it stealing game passwords, but it’s inevitable that it will be adapted by criminals; it’s just a question of modifying the payload the trojan installs. If users can find an alternative browser, then that’s good mitigation against the threat.” Alternative browsers FireFox, Opera, Chrome and Safari are not vulnerable to the flaw, so if you know what’s good for you best jump on one of these to be safe (most are better than IE anyway). - Paul Lester [BBC] security Internet Explorer Microsoft
I'm running Microsoft Office Word. Every time I get out of the program a screen comes up saying "this program has a fatal flaw" or something like that. Then another screen comes up saying "Windows cannot find this file and is closing." Does anyone else have this problem with Vista and Word?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSP1 has NOT fixed a reported bug in Windows Mail. I am using Vista Home Premium now with SP1 but this also occurred. The bug is that, if an email is open in its own window then Windows Mail is shut down (leaving the email open) then the computer shut down, then, when the computer is rebooted, that email now appears in the Drafts folder as well as in its original folder
View 7 Replies View RelatedThis message is in regards to the Wireless Zero Configuration not being fixed in SP1. This is a serious issue for multiplayer gaming enthusiasts who play wirelessly. This system causes a lag spike in games that lasts between 1-3 seconds and reoccurs EVERY 60 SECONDS. This is unacceptable! This makes playing games over a wireless connection completely unbearable!
The problem goes like this. Every 60 seconds, via Wlan autoconfig (WZC), my computer (and ANY computer using Vista and wireless connection) attempts to find the best connection. During this time period, if you're doing something intensive with your connection such as playing a game, the connection spikes and causes an intermission between your game and the server you're playing on because your connection is being temporarily interrupted. There are no options to stop WZC from doing this. Manually disabling Wlan autoconfig causes you to be shut out from connecting to the internet at all........
Ive recently got a gaming pc and installed Vista ultimate. Since then its been crashing after 10 to 15 min of gameplay. Anyway, My spec are Core 2 duo 3.0, 4gig of ram and a p5n32-e sli plus motherboard. To fix the "freezing", I had to remove a 2 gig of ram. Anyone else had to do this to fix vista from freezing?
Anyone know if SP1 or any update will fix Vista for computer with more than 2 gig of ram ? Ive downloaded the window update 929777 but it did not fix anything and im still running with 2gig of ram. Kinda sucks to have 2gig of ram laying on my desk.
I note that a common subject here is the problem of USB wireless mice not being recognized by computers. For what it's worth the following is my experience. This evening my 3 year old Logitech wireless mouse just stopped working, abruptly, and I started getting repeated messages of an unknown USB device even with nothing attached. I tried the mouse on two other computers...it worked fine. I tried a system restore from yesterday with no results. I followed the advice offered on other threads to delete USB ports and reboot...no go. Still weird behavior. I noted that one person with a similar problem turned off notebook and removed and reinstalled battery...whalla! It works. The mouse now functions and no more strange messages. I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a Sony Vaio notebook.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista/32 bit/Home Premium. I installed IE8, started getting "command failed to execute" when I tried to open an attachment in my Hotmail (old style not Live) on MSN Premium with MSN Explorer. They would open in Live. I like the old stuff because it's easier to use for me. I read the threads to uninstall IE8. I did and problem fixed. Go to microsoft.com, click on the support tab, click IE Solution Center, click How to uninstall IE8, click Microsoft Fix It.
If it goes to your Download Manager, run it fro there after it downloads. Restart and check as it tells you to see that it uninstalled. Hope this works for you also. You'd think Microsoft could put a package together that would work with their own systems.... I have another problem that no one seems to know how to fix, had a recommendation to go to Mozilla Firefox.
I have a DLT7000/DLT8000 connected to an adaptec 29160 card. After I installed Vista Business64, the tape drive is identified as a hard-disk, obviously it does not work, at the same time the hard-drives connected to the same scsi-card is not accessible.Hard-drives and Tape-drives is correctly identified in BIOS. Its said that Vista has built in support for the Adaptec 29160 card.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been searching for a way to get my Snipping tool back in my vistax64 system. It started with the common errors saying there is a problem and to restart and so on. I installed a Wacom Bamboo tablet on a Vista x86 laptop and a x64 Desktop both SP2. The laptop has had no issues and the x64 desktop ran the snipper fine for months afterwords but eventually lost the tool's functionality. So do not blame the Wacom in my case. I say this because I have read elsewhere it was a suspect cause.
After reading about some folks doing an Office 2007 Office diagnostics from the Outlook Help menu I tried it and it worked but there is a different behaivor. I have dual displays and before it went bad it would open up in one display but now it opens the selection area across both displays. That's OK with me, I just wanted to report.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi had a major issue w/ my sound, and finally just figured out what was causing the problem. i wanted to share this following information with any of you that might find themselves losing sleep, dumbfounded, and/or otherwise unable to find help elsewhere (i couldn't find anything on this particular issue!).
the issue: sound distortion, crackling, poping, and other abnormalities w/ sound.
let's break this down fast:
my system:
- windows vista premium home edition 64-bit (6.0, build 6001) service pack 1
- evga geforce gtx 260 over-clocked edition graphics card (drivers: 7.15.0011.8250)
- 640gb westren digital hard drive
- intel core i7 cpu 940mhz
- gigabyte ex58-ud4p (bios version: 6.00pg) motherboard
- soundblaster x-fi xtreme audio pci edition (driver version: 5.12.0001.2007)
background info:
i had a clean installation of windows vista (3rd installation after testing w/ another hard drive, and confirming my hardware wasn't causing my sound issues), all microsoft's recommended/critical updates installed, all motherboard drivers installed, and so forth. clean sparkling new system, sound was working great, and then as i was installing other programs .....the sound problem/issue returned (see above for details)
the resolution:
if you own a gigabyte motherboard (newer!), and have installed gigabyte's dynamic energy saver software, and have it enabled through bios + the program ....then this can cause issues w/ your sound!
immediately upon disabling the program's features (which i had previously manually enabled myself), all my sound distortion, crackling, and poping issues disappeared! gone! problem solved! once again all my music, videos, Internet.com videos, etc have returned to working/sounding flawless!
so, if you are out there, and facing similar issues with sound under the same circumstances/hardware i have, then check to see if that's what's causing it! i hope this helps others like myself!
who'd of thought that would be the issue behind a sound problem. this almost drove me insane! anyhow, good luck and happy computing everyone! *salute!*
it's possible and economical to have wireless broadband without having a fixed land line connected because i'm sick of paying the line rental on a phone that i just about never use. I sometimes think we pay through the nose for communication that's not really up to speed in Australia.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe biggest factor that explains why your scores between XP and Vista are so radically different is because the benchmark program you are using (you never said which) is likely written specifically for XP. The Vista scores cannot be taken as a true benchmark unless you use a benchmarking utility written specifically for Vista, such as PCMark Vantage. You can then compare scores between yours and other Vista installations. But unless you find a utility that can correctly test and recognize the differences between both XP and Vista, you cannot accurately compare scores.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has been locked out of his Dell laptop and cannot find the password for the single account that it has. The laptop has Vista Ultimate installed on it and I am unable to activate the hidden administrator's account to get into Vista. Other investigations using other software shows only 2 accounts, Administrator and Guest but not the actual user single account that shows up onto the login screen. ( I have managed to blank out the Administrator and Guest passwords ) I have a standard Vista Recovery Disk , but I am unable to either repair or re-install Vista from the Dell hidden partition , and the only alternative is to install a unused retail version of Vista Home Premium that my friend has been given awhile ago. I have 2 questions
1) Is the Vista Ultimate user account passwords located in a different place as compared to other versions of Vista?
2) if I install this retail version of Home Premium on the Dell laptop, will I have problems with the propriety hardware that is on the Dell laptop and would I need to find all the Dell drivers for the laptop?
The often heard recurring theme spread by no nothing trolls and fanboys is if Vista isn't working right, it must be something you did rather than owning up to how badly Vista is designed once you start poking around and SEE how badly implemented it is. Much of the frustration with Vista comes from it's applets crashing or acting up for no apparent reason. Since these applets are INTERNAL and built-in as part of Vista's core the often heard excuse it's some third party driver, a hardware problem or other software you installed is proven to be bogus.
When something happens to either crash or slow down Vista it usually gets documented in Vista's Error Logs. However like most everything else Microsoft does, the logs are of little actual value other than pointing to how poorly designed and broken Vista really is.
To illustrate how broken Vista is, here's my experience this morning. As usual I started my day going to Google (my default home page) and clicking on News to see what the headlines were. Microsoft's browser hung. Waiting for it to respond, after 90 seconds I gave up and sure enough was treated to the usual BS asking if you want to wait longer or shut it down. I shut IE7 down. Next I went to Event Viewer......
I'm new to Vista x64 (the op sys as well as this site). I have just endeavored to try out Vista 64 bit on one of my workstations. I run VMWare Workstation at work and can use the additional memory addressing of Vista 64 (I have 4 gigs of RAM). nyway, my problem is this.
1) I created another partition on my drive for Vista x64. (two other partitions running Vista x86).
2) I have been running dual boot with Vista for quite a while and it runs fine.
3) After creating the new partition and installing Vista x64 with SP1 (integrated service pack on install DVD), I get drive corruption problems all over the place.
I have 3 500 gigabyte Western Digital drives in this machine. The first is for operating system partitions and the second strictly for backup (using Acronis True Image) and the third for data. The data drive seems to have problems reading when I attempt to install additional drivers for the x64 bit environment (just downloaded from the web). Also, I soon will get errors afterwards on the C drive also.
There are many articles on how to dual boot Vista and XP, but I want to dual boot Vista and Vista, with an existing installation, on 2 Hard Drives. Currently I switch these in the BIOS, but I'd much rather chose at a later stage, can this be done? Why? Because I keep one of the drives for random software that I rarely use.
View 9 Replies View RelatedCANNOT SIMPLY UPGRADE WITHIN VISTA??? FIRST TIME ISSUE EVER POSTED! I have a question that I cannot make sense of. I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 installed on my computer. I have a copy of a legit retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade SP1 DVD-ROM. I want to upgrade my current Vista Home Basic to Vista Ultimate. Sounds simple enough. I have read everywhere on the web and it can upgrade easily as long as you upgrade within Windows Vista and not a reboot installation. Okay, but when I get to a point in the Vista grade process, I CANNOT! During the installation process, when I get to the screen that states, "Which type of installation do you want?" AFTER INPUTTING THE VISTA ULTIMATE KEY CODE ON A PREVIOUS SCREEN, the option should be "Upgrade" ONLY and NOT "Custom (Advanced)" since the key code is set for upgrade option only. I GET THE TOTAL OPPOSITE!!! I only get the option "Custom (Advanced)" and the "Upgrade" option is grayed out. WHAT??? NO "Upgrade" option??? I SHOULD BE GETTING THE "Upgrade" OPTION!!! This does not make any sense!!! It states at the reason at the bottom of this screen, "Upgrade has been disabled. - The upgrade option cannot be started, to upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running." This does not make any sense, does it??? I should be able to only upgrade since I only have an upgrade disc. I am upgrading from a lower edition of Vista to a higher edition of Vista, therefore I should ALSO have this feature to upgrade enabled too when it knows my CD key is a higher ("upgrade") edition. I have spent several hours searching and read around the web and cannot find my same or similar case scenario. A first time! People who have upgraded between different editions of Vista with either the Windows Anytime Upgrade retail package or (mine) the Windows Vista Ultimate Retail Upgrade box (includes the Windows Anytime Upgrade anyways on it) say it is a breeze! What is going on with me??? I should not be having any problems what-so-ever!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried everything to get my games to run smoothly on Vista, and nothing seems to work very well. Its not so much as my computer sucks, cause when I downgraded to XP, just to try it out, my games were running perfectly smooth. And don't say, "Just stick with XP then!" cause I love Vista in its many other ways.
The only reason I can come up with as to why my games run much slower on Vista is because Vista is a DirectX10 supported OS, but has a DirectX9 "emulator". And since all my games, and video card are DX9 compatible, it runs in the emulated mode. Now we all know running emulators makes our computers run a bit slower, so thats the only solution I can come up with.
Well I know alot of others have had this problem, and Microsoft knows its a problem, so they have said, and I've been told that Vista SP1 would fix that. Well I downloaded SP1 RC Refresh, yet nothing seems to have changed at all...
So heres my questions - Do you guys feel that because its a DX10 supported OS, and im running DX9 software/hardware, that thats a reason why my games run slower? Also what do you guys think on Vista SP1 RC Refresh?
Easy one step procedure to fix vista: uninstall vista.

3 days before I had upgrade my PC's memory to 4G, then I find Vista 32 Bit version can not recognize all the memory. So I try to install an Vista 64 Bit version for the test to check if the 64 bit system is ok for me.
The problem is, Vista 32 was installed on to the 3rd partition of the harddisk, usually the drive letter will be E in Windows XP and previous version windows, although it in Vista it display as C drive. I tried to install the 64 Bit Vista in to the 4th partiton. After all the drivers and applications install completed, that seems so far so good. Then I find my previous F drive now names C. The Drive C in Vista 32 Bit names E now. When
I try to boot into Vista 32, the error message : winload.exe could not find.
I used bcdedit try to redirect the device and osdevice to E drive, Vista 32 still could not start normally, the system will hang up in the blue desktop background, seems can not load user profile or sth like that.
I have check the E drive, all the files of Vista 32 are still there.Anyone have any good idea about fix the Vista 32 bit boot and keep the Vista 64 bit also?
Will there be Vista SP3 or SP2 is the final service pack for Vista?

View 9 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
I have one Vista and one XP. I would like to share a folder on my Vista to XP. I configured all the things that it needed to be configured....however, my XP can see my vista shard folder from Vista but I couldn't open--"Access denied. Contact Network Administrator".... I have everyone-full control permission on Vista shared folder.
Additionally, I tried to copy a file into my Public folder on Vista..my XP see it but can't open it.."Access denied. Contact Network Administrator"..... Lastly, I also tried disable firewall on my both boxes..but ..still having same problem...
