Can't Save Changes To An Existing HTML File
Sep 16, 2009
I can create and save an HTML file but can't save changes to an existing HTML file. When trying to save using Notepad, the error window says:
Cannot create the
C:UsersRoyDesktopWebPages est.html file
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
When trying to save using Notepad++, the error window says:
Save failed Please check whether if (sic) this file is opened in another program.
What I can do with Notepad (I haven't tried any work-around with Notepad++) is to first save the .html file as a .txt file, then open the .txt file and successfully save it as a .html file. I tell you this as a possible diagnostic clue; it is by no means an acceptable fix. This problem appeared suddenly out of the blue. I can think of nothing that might have caused it. I have tried the usual stuff, such as re-booting, but nothing has worked.

Note: The following description refers to an HTML file residing in a folder
on my computer, not an HTML file on the internet (web page.) When I open an existing HTML file with Notepad, then attempt to "Save" it, an alert message box appears which says: "Cannot create the C:UsersMeDesktopfolder namefilename.html file.
Make sure the path and filename are correct." I can "Save As..." a different file name or different file type, but cannot "Save" in the normal manner. This problem only affects saving an HTML file. There is no problem with other file types. I'm not certain of the time sequence, but I think I downloaded an update to
QuickTime since the last time there wasn't a problem.

For background on this post, see "Unable to save HTML file" posted 9/17/2009 12:31PM. Comments:
(1) A reset of IE did not fix the problem.
(2) A system restore to the day before installing QuickTime did fix the problem. This doesn't prove that QuickTime is at fault, of course, but I still have my suspicions. I will probably reload QuickTime shortly, and if the problem returns, I'll post it.
Note: It appears that the system restore reversed the IE reset, so for anyone (like me) who might be nervous about doing the reset, the restore is a safety backup.

I have W.Vista Home Premium & MS Office 2007. I am trying to insert my 'signature' into both sending and replying to my e-mails. I have followed the help instructions as I wanted to change the font to another style, colour etc. However 'Help' tells you to format your signature in a WP package and save in html format. Easy, I thought! In Word 2007 when you try to Save As - the html option si not in the drop down menu. so i tried in Wordpad, no luck ther either. how I save to html in vista? I had no problems in W.XP. Wish I had not had to change!

I may have to re-install the Vista operating system on my primary hard drive. According to Dell, installing/re-installing Vista will erase any existing files (gee, why couldn't they have configured Vista like XP which would save your data?).So as not to loose my files, my plan is to install a new primary hard drive. And once the new drive is functioning properly, to add the old one as a data only secondary drive (The drive hasn't failed, it's just inaccessable due to a user logon password issue which I'm working in another thread). Does anyone see a problem with reading the data files/folders on the old drive? Will the existance of an operating system be a problem? I'm hoping the drive will act as a ghosted drive, and the answer will be no.

I received zipped files via FTP. I extracted them and brought them to a C:folder. I have three choices: a CD, a Web or a LMS version. I cannot open any of the key HTML file in them. The choice is either player.html or index.html. I can view the source code but keep getting blocked. I tell Vista to allow blocked content. Nothing. I am the administrator. I started fooling with the Active X and Scripted security features since this is the warning I receive when trying to open the HTLM file. I enabled everything you aren't supposed to, received the dire warnings but still cannot access the content. I put everything back to default (because the dire warnings are scarey!) I am using Vista Home Premium. I am desperate to open any of these three files as I have a job using them next week.

I have a really strange problem on my VISTA home premium PC. I have a number of HTML files stored in documents folder, but when I try to edit the HTML file in notepad I get the following error message: Cannot create the file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
File and path are correct because I just opened it from the documents folder. What makes it strange is that if I change the extension from HTML to TXT I can edit and save without any issue, but once I change back to HTML I lose the ability to save any edits. Also, if I copy the HTML file to another folder such as desktop or C: root, I can edit without any issues. I've checked the properties of the folder and file and haven't found anything out of the ordinary. Searched the MS KB and haven't turned up anything.

Hello! I have downloaded from internet, legally, 2 music albums each 120 mb each! However, they are in html format and cannot manage to extract the files that are in it! I am sure that there is someway to take the tracks from these files but I knew that html are internet files! When I double click on these html files which are supposed to have the music in it, automatically I am forwarded to a web page that never loads and moreover the PC freezes!

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

I really need to change a system file called 'hosts'. I've changed it many times before, but today I'm not allowed. I access the file, make a very small change, then try to save it just by leaving the path as is. Then I get a message that says "Cannot save file, check path.." But I haven't changed the path.

I purchased a WD 500 GB external, and used windows backup. It worked fine. I was planing to return my laptop for repairs because it was making funny sounds, so i deleted all my documents/music/pictures and so on. When i went to restore everything, I got a pretty nasty problem.
everything was restored, but stored on the F: drive, which is the external. when ever i would start up the computer, without the external plugged in, it would give me an error saying that the desktop wasn't found and that it was in different folder. there was also a problem with Microsoft office, which when ever i would open Word 2007 it would say "the office open xml file Normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."
then it would give me a second error message "Word cannot open the existing file. (normal) i would also get this same error when opening up any existing word file. when i would write things up and then go to save it, it says that "word has insufficient memory. do you want to save document one as rescued document 2?" i have a similar problem with itunes

I wanted to download Adobe Flash Player 10 from their site, but whenever I click on the link, instead of getting the Install/Don't Install prompt for the ActiveX plug-in, all I get is a window asking if I want to save the file, and it is listed as a Binary file. Attached is an image of the download window. Now, this woudn't be a problem, as I could just run it as normal after downloading it, but when I click Save File, it downloads it, and then the file disappears. I how can I get the Save File prompt to stop showing up, or if I do have to save it, how can I choose where it goes to?

i have spent the last three days trying to get my vista home premium machine to save a short movie in avi or anything, so that i can post it on Internet. i have visited the most useful "papajohn" website, watched videos and read numerous articles on how to set up my system. it seems to me that version 6 of movie maker does not give the option to save the mswmm file as anything else. my wife`s older xp machine ( running version 5 ) has no problem and i can follow the steps as outlined by "papajohn" to change the save format.i have tried downloading the media encoder 9 program inserting parts of it in mm and got myself in an awful mess. so much so that i had to do a restord back to three days earlier.i am an older guy who knows enough to be dangerous but not enough to get
myself out of this challenge.

Having changed my default browser, the .html and .htm file associations had been set to "unknown". Don't ask me why. Trying to set them via the usual mechanisms: "open with" or "file associations" menus does not work because they are populated only with MS programs. All attempts to select other programs via "browse" option fail. I can select the program but it is simply ignored and no change to the file associations happens. Nor is the selected program added to the list of programs available for selection. As there is no option provided for typing in the full path, as used to be the case with earlier and better operating systems, and the "browse" option does not work, I am totally stuck.
Is this a new MS policy to prevent users from running non-MS programs?? Whatever it is, it is very frustrating and affects all programs and extensions, not just the .html of the above example. Another very annoying thing is that even when I manage to run some non-MS programs manually, they will only work if run in "admin mode", as they are prevented from writing to disk. Are users not supposed to be allowed to write to our own disks anymore????

PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes. There are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives'icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

Something has changed in my Home Premium system such that I can no longer save to the desktop! When I try, I get an error message stating " You don't have permission to save in this location." I do not recall changing ANY permissions to prevent this. I did have a problem installing Office Home 2007 and maybe that caused a change. Where do I need to go to set the permission back to allow me to save to the desktop?

ASUS has just designed a new monster graphics card that breaks the mold for reference design GeForce GTX 295, called the ASUS MARS 295 Limited Edition. The card, although retains the name "GeForce GTX 295", same device ID, and is compatible with existing NVIDIA drivers, has two huge innovations put in by ASUS, which go far beyond being yet another overclocked GeForce GTX 295: the company used two G200-350-B3 graphics processors, the same ones that make the GeForce GTX 285. The GPUs have all the 240 shader processors enabled, and also have the complete 512-bit GDDR3 memory interface enabled. This dual-PCB monstrosity holds 32 memory chips, and 4 GB of total memory (each GPU accesses 2 GB of it). Apart from these, each GPU system uses the same exact clock speeds as the GeForce GTX 285: 648/1476/2400 MHz (core/shader/memory).

On a recent reboot from my desktop screen, I was confronted with a user login screen that asked for a password. I've never use a password for access, nor did I set my PC up this way. Don't know how it happened, but with no password, I can't get it. Dell says that I must reinstall my operating system. They also say that, unlike windows XP, a reinstallation will overwrite all of my existing files/folders. Is this true?
