No Choice In UAC: On Or Off
Oct 26, 2009I'm not computer smart enough to know if UAC works. I had gotten used to clicking on the pop ups and it didn't bother me. But recently I had no choice and had to turn it off. After I upgraded to BitDefender Internet Security 2010 there were no records of scan logs anywhere, not in the program face and not in my C drive. Even right on the scan results window, when I clicked to View Log absolutely nothing happened. In order to get a decent install of BDIS 2010 I had to uninstall it and then reinstall with UAC turned off (suggested by a BD forum moderator). So when I searched my fool head off for logs and couldn't find them, on a lark I turned UAC off again (I had turned it back on after reinstall of BDIS), restarted, performed a scan and the logs were all in the proper places and viewable. I'd just as soon have UAC turned on, but I much prefer being able to access and view my security scan logs so I'm operating with it off.

How To Get Rid Of Browser Choice Updates
Apr 2, 2010I stupidly downloaded the 'Browser Choice' update and can't get rid of it. I'd made my browser choices before downloading (I use IE, Chrome and sometimes Firefox), so I don't want to pick another one. But I can't get rid of the update: every time I reboot it comes up, with an annoying 'Certificate cannot be verified' message as well (from Windows????). I don't want ever to see this browser choice message again:

Sep 5, 2009I just set up a home wireless network (first time) and in the process some security questions came up. I am using a 2wire gateway provided by AT&T. It has a firewall internal, and all 3 of my machines have windows firewall functional. In order to make the wireless connection, I was required to enter the Passkey number from the gateway, but I was given the choice to connect to 2 other networks which I assume belonged to neighbors. The signals were weak, but I tried one and was able to piggyback to the 'net with no problem. My question is, how do I know that the neighbors are not able to connect to my network? Should I care? Would they be able to hack into my machines, and if so what should I do about it?

I want to uninstall the damned browser choice notice now being presented every time I boot. I just wish that unelected, corrupt bunch of crooks in the EU Commission would butt out. It was they who forced Microsoft to punish us this way. Although it would also have been sensible for Microsoft to add a 'Do Not Show Again' button.

May 6, 2008I've been trying for 2 days now to upgrade from Vista Business edition to SP1. The same thing keeps happening. I get through parts 1 and 2 ok, but when the system reboots for part 3, it reboots several times giving me the choice to boot normally or in safe mode, then eventually it stops rebooting and just goes blank. I can reboot successfully in safe mode but the installation of part 3 will ultimately fail (the error code points to not being able to install particular components as a result of being in safe mode) and the system has to regress to the original condition. I tried all the suggestions on the MS Vista upgrade trouble shooting site (as well as several other sites)- including checking for specific updates - none of which apply to my machine - at least that what windows update tells me when I try to install them, checked the disk for errors, and checked the memory for problems. I also turned absolutely everything no- original MS off for start up including antivirus and some other stuff that I have and the same thing keeps happening. Each pass, from upgrade install to fail, and regress back to original condition takes about 5 hours.
I'm running Vista on a quad core machine with 4G of onboard memory (even though Vista 32 can only use about 3 gigs) and a smoking video card so I doubt this is a hardware problem. This problem appears to be similar to the original 'endless reboot' problem that prompted the original halting of SP1 distribution back in the early spring - I thought that problem was fixed! I tried to get real time help from the MS site but got a message that there was a problem with the site. - Good Greif! This is probably the most frustrating MS experience of all time. With all due respect to the folks at MS, if it was your intention to have people to switch from Windows PC's to Apples or even Linux based PC's, I doubt you could have come up with a better plan. I've already switched two of my home computers to Ubutu!

Jun 29, 2008I received zipped files via FTP. I extracted them and brought them to a C:folder. I have three choices: a CD, a Web or a LMS version. I cannot open any of the key HTML file in them. The choice is either player.html or index.html. I can view the source code but keep getting blocked. I tell Vista to allow blocked content. Nothing. I am the administrator. I started fooling with the Active X and Scripted security features since this is the warning I receive when trying to open the HTLM file. I enabled everything you aren't supposed to, received the dire warnings but still cannot access the content. I put everything back to default (because the dire warnings are scarey!) I am using Vista Home Premium. I am desperate to open any of these three files as I have a job using them next week.

Oct 5, 2009I have a really strange problem on my VISTA home premium PC. I have a number of HTML files stored in documents folder, but when I try to edit the HTML file in notepad I get the following error message: Cannot create the file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
File and path are correct because I just opened it from the documents folder. What makes it strange is that if I change the extension from HTML to TXT I can edit and save without any issue, but once I change back to HTML I lose the ability to save any edits. Also, if I copy the HTML file to another folder such as desktop or C: root, I can edit without any issues. I've checked the properties of the folder and file and haven't found anything out of the ordinary. Searched the MS KB and haven't turned up anything.
URLs In HTML Email Don't Work
Dec 11, 2009Anybody notice how if you put URLs in HTML emails, they don't work? The HTML code adds a lot of alphanumeric stuff in front of the URL so it can't be located. I don't recall this problem prior to Vista Mail. So, if I want to be sure they'll work I'll have to turn off the HTML. Or, I'll save it as a draft then see if the URLS work- if they work in the draft folder, they'll usually work OK.

Can't Save Changes To An Existing HTML File
Sep 16, 2009I can create and save an HTML file but can't save changes to an existing HTML file. When trying to save using Notepad, the error window says:
Cannot create the
C:UsersRoyDesktopWebPages est.html file
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
When trying to save using Notepad++, the error window says:
Save failed Please check whether if (sic) this file is opened in another program.
What I can do with Notepad (I haven't tried any work-around with Notepad++) is to first save the .html file as a .txt file, then open the .txt file and successfully save it as a .html file. I tell you this as a possible diagnostic clue; it is by no means an acceptable fix. This problem appeared suddenly out of the blue. I can think of nothing that might have caused it. I have tried the usual stuff, such as re-booting, but nothing has worked.

(1) A reset of IE did not fix the problem.
(2) A system restore to the day before installing QuickTime did fix the problem. This doesn't prove that QuickTime is at fault, of course, but I still have my suspicions. I will probably reload QuickTime shortly, and if the problem returns, I'll post it.
Note: It appears that the system restore reversed the IE reset, so for anyone (like me) who might be nervous about doing the reset, the restore is a safety backup.

It is disable from using the upgrade choice, I want to choose to pick. I did not purchase Windows Ultimate through Acer anytime upgrade option. It was a store bought software it was cheaper than Acer price they offer. What is the problem with installing Ultimate with Acer computer?
