How Get Rid Of The Boot Screen With OS Choice Option?
Jul 29, 2009
I installed Vista Home Premium upgrade as a dual boot with my original xp installation. Both are on separate hard drives. I now want to get rid of xp and use the hard drive for a Windows 7 machine I am building. Will this infringe the upgrade license? If this is okay, how do I get rid of the boot screen with OS choice option?

I've been trying for 2 days now to upgrade from Vista Business edition to SP1. The same thing keeps happening. I get through parts 1 and 2 ok, but when the system reboots for part 3, it reboots several times giving me the choice to boot normally or in safe mode, then eventually it stops rebooting and just goes blank. I can reboot successfully in safe mode but the installation of part 3 will ultimately fail (the error code points to not being able to install particular components as a result of being in safe mode) and the system has to regress to the original condition. I tried all the suggestions on the MS Vista upgrade trouble shooting site (as well as several other sites)- including checking for specific updates - none of which apply to my machine - at least that what windows update tells me when I try to install them, checked the disk for errors, and checked the memory for problems. I also turned absolutely everything no- original MS off for start up including antivirus and some other stuff that I have and the same thing keeps happening. Each pass, from upgrade install to fail, and regress back to original condition takes about 5 hours.
I'm running Vista on a quad core machine with 4G of onboard memory (even though Vista 32 can only use about 3 gigs) and a smoking video card so I doubt this is a hardware problem. This problem appears to be similar to the original 'endless reboot' problem that prompted the original halting of SP1 distribution back in the early spring - I thought that problem was fixed! I tried to get real time help from the MS site but got a message that there was a problem with the site. - Good Greif! This is probably the most frustrating MS experience of all time. With all due respect to the folks at MS, if it was your intention to have people to switch from Windows PC's to Apples or even Linux based PC's, I doubt you could have come up with a better plan. I've already switched two of my home computers to Ubutu!

I had successfully installed win xp pro on my pre-installed vista home computer.
When I used to boot up, I had the option of selecting one of those 2 OS. I begun having problems with xp pro so I "repaired" it using my xp pro cd. Now, I can't boot into either OS. Please help. I have tinkered with the MBR, FIXMBR, FIXBOOt commands but can't get anything to work. All I get when I boot up is the selection of Keyboards,
language and then I get a menu of options such as Repair startup, Memory diagnostics, Recovery (to factory settings) etc., I don't have vista dvd since it came pre-installed on my computer.
I do have xp but am afraid of re-installing xp pro since I have documents on borh drives (each drive contains its own operating system).
For example, my c drive contains vista, (d is recovery on the same hard drive) and xp pro is on a separate physical drive.
I can see that both drives have windows on them but I am unable to boot. I have managed to get vistaboot pro but can't seem to run it.
I can't get xp to run nor can I get vista to run.

Every time I boot my machine (dual boot - 2 x vista 32 home Premium), the boot manager tries to take me into an incomplete, and unwanted, vista setup option which then hangs the machine. I want to delete that option from the boot manager but it doesn't appear in bcdedit, and that is about as far as my technical knowledge goes. how to get rid of an unwanted vista setup option from the bm?

2) Concerns I have several media licenses (wma's from Walmart Music Store) on Vista on the IDE drive.,Questions for the group ,Could you tell me the best way to do #1,Can the windows easy transfer keep the media licenses or do I have to go through Wal-Mart to get the licenses reactivated? Or are there other options for the licensing of the WMAs

I'm using an HP pc, running XP Pro. I am practicing seting up a small business network and at that time decided to set up a user account, I gave this account administrative status. In doing so Administrator is no longer an option on the welcome screen. That is where all of my settings are and my contacts, etc. Now it will not let me delete the new account that I set up in order to get back to the original administrator.

I have done a clean install of Vista Ultimate (64), and since then, everytime I start my computer, it fails to boot correctly. It passes the BIOS page, starts the animated bar at the bottom of the page, and a few seconds later, the screen goes blank, and my VDU gives the messgae, "NO SIGNAL" After about a minute, the system reboots to the BIOS page again and continues up to the animated screen, and stops again. After it self boots for a second time, I get the SAFE MODE option screen. If I leave it on START WINDOWS NORMALLY, and leave it to complete the 30s count down, It boots again, and then completes the boot into Vista. If at the count down screen, I press enter, it goes into a boot loop that doesn't stop until I press the reset button on my box.? I have done a re-install twice and problem continues.

I am using a Dell XPS 1330 machine running Vista Home Premium.
I needed to replace some files(tcpip.sys,tcpreg.sys etc)in the system 32 folder with their new versions. But Vista wont let me copy them to the destination folder(system 32) citing admin reasons.
Read a bit and found out that "Administrator" account is by default disabled in Vista.
So ran the following 2 commands from command prompt to enable Admin account and set the admin password.
net user administrator password
net user administrator activate:yes
After that logged off and was expecting to see the admin login option on the welcome screen. But it didnt come.
Actually in the control panel user accounts I can see myself as Administrator....but I guess that is some administrator with limited powers and there is a greater/stronger/divine/all-conquering "Administrator" above this crappy admin category to which I right now belong and which Microsoft has due to some inexplicable reasons kept undercover. So plz plz help me and lemme know how to get that all-conquering admin to come on my welcome screen so that i can log in and try out what I want.

This is the best install I have ever done (or was)…I did a fresh install and followed a tweak which was to very enlightening, to say the least. From there I have been to a few other sites and moved on to fully customizing my desktop/login and……well…this is where I stuffed up…My BOOT screen no longer works properly, even with the original “winload.exe.mui” file replaced.
I downloaded and used “Vista Boot Logo Generator” I loved the results on my last install…It worked well. Upon deciding to do a fresh install with Tweaking in mind, I simply coppied over a Boot logo I made previously after allowing permissions and all that as well as changing the NO GUI in msconfig…ect….BUT......

I'm not computer smart enough to know if UAC works. I had gotten used to clicking on the pop ups and it didn't bother me. But recently I had no choice and had to turn it off. After I upgraded to BitDefender Internet Security 2010 there were no records of scan logs anywhere, not in the program face and not in my C drive. Even right on the scan results window, when I clicked to View Log absolutely nothing happened. In order to get a decent install of BDIS 2010 I had to uninstall it and then reinstall with UAC turned off (suggested by a BD forum moderator). So when I searched my fool head off for logs and couldn't find them, on a lark I turned UAC off again (I had turned it back on after reinstall of BDIS), restarted, performed a scan and the logs were all in the proper places and viewable. I'd just as soon have UAC turned on, but I much prefer being able to access and view my security scan logs so I'm operating with it off.

I'm going to upgrade from a 22" Samsung 226BW to a 24" monitor. I've been looking at the Samsung SM 2493HM and the T240.
The 2493HM has got pretty good reviews but I can't seem to find any on the T240.
Do people think it's a better panel or is it just the rose red surround that's attracting attention?

I stupidly downloaded the 'Browser Choice' update and can't get rid of it. I'd made my browser choices before downloading (I use IE, Chrome and sometimes Firefox), so I don't want to pick another one. But I can't get rid of the update: every time I reboot it comes up, with an annoying 'Certificate cannot be verified' message as well (from Windows????). I don't want ever to see this browser choice message again:

I've got an Sony VGN-BX197XP laptop that I've upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. Since then I've encountered some strange display-related issues:
1) I could only boot into Aero about 50% of the time. The rest of the time I forced onto the Standard theme with no Aero option. Since installing Vista SP1 I can't get Aero at all.
2) When not running in Aero mode I can't get the Windows Media Player to play video files, nor get a Perfomance Index.
3) If I plug in an external monitor I can't get a picture on the laptop monitor but I *do* get a picture on the external monitor and it runs Aero 100% of the time. It will also play video files and give me a performance index.

I just set up a home wireless network (first time) and in the process some security questions came up. I am using a 2wire gateway provided by AT&T. It has a firewall internal, and all 3 of my machines have windows firewall functional. In order to make the wireless connection, I was required to enter the Passkey number from the gateway, but I was given the choice to connect to 2 other networks which I assume belonged to neighbors. The signals were weak, but I tried one and was able to piggyback to the 'net with no problem. My question is, how do I know that the neighbors are not able to connect to my network? Should I care? Would they be able to hack into my machines, and if so what should I do about it?

Windows Vista Home Premium. I used to know but forget... Can someone tell me where Windows stores newly installed updates? I want to uninstall the damned browser choice notice now being presented every time I boot. I just wish that unelected, corrupt bunch of crooks in the EU Commission would butt out. It was they who forced Microsoft to punish us this way. Although it would also have been sensible for Microsoft to add a 'Do Not Show Again' button.

* When I start the system, it gets to the Vista's bootscreen (where you see the progress bar). At that point, the laptop freezes. In fact, it freezes before I can see the colored boxes in the progress-bar.
* If I force a cold shutdown (by holding down the power-button), and then restart the laptop, it might load fine and everything would be running fine (like there was never any problems).
* Assuming, it didn't freeze and loaded Vista successfully, then I would shutdown Vista through the Start button.
* If I try to start the laptop again, it will freeze at the bootscreen again.
* I cannot tell when it will freeze at the bootscreen..............
