I bought a new Gateway Laptop with Vista Home Premium already loaded. If I had a choice, I would never have Vista on this computer and if there was anyway to get it off and back to Windows XP Home Addition, I would if it didn't cost me an arm and leg.

I want to uninstall the damned browser choice notice now being presented every time I boot. I just wish that unelected, corrupt bunch of crooks in the EU Commission would butt out. It was they who forced Microsoft to punish us this way. Although it would also have been sensible for Microsoft to add a 'Do Not Show Again' button.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm not computer smart enough to know if UAC works. I had gotten used to clicking on the pop ups and it didn't bother me. But recently I had no choice and had to turn it off. After I upgraded to BitDefender Internet Security 2010 there were no records of scan logs anywhere, not in the program face and not in my C drive. Even right on the scan results window, when I clicked to View Log absolutely nothing happened. In order to get a decent install of BDIS 2010 I had to uninstall it and then reinstall with UAC turned off (suggested by a BD forum moderator). So when I searched my fool head off for logs and couldn't find them, on a lark I turned UAC off again (I had turned it back on after reinstall of BDIS), restarted, performed a scan and the logs were all in the proper places and viewable. I'd just as soon have UAC turned on, but I much prefer being able to access and view my security scan logs so I'm operating with it off.

The 2493HM has got pretty good reviews but I can't seem to find any on the T240.

I stupidly downloaded the 'Browser Choice' update and can't get rid of it. I'd made my browser choices before downloading (I use IE, Chrome and sometimes Firefox), so I don't want to pick another one. But I can't get rid of the update: every time I reboot it comes up, with an annoying 'Certificate cannot be verified' message as well (from Windows????). I don't want ever to see this browser choice message again:

I need to avoid losing documents, photos, Favorites, e-mail addresses, and e-mail messages in the case of an HD disaster. (I have no music files.) I obviously need to backup Documents and Pictures. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just set up a home wireless network (first time) and in the process some security questions came up. I am using a 2wire gateway provided by AT&T. It has a firewall internal, and all 3 of my machines have windows firewall functional. In order to make the wireless connection, I was required to enter the Passkey number from the gateway, but I was given the choice to connect to 2 other networks which I assume belonged to neighbors. The signals were weak, but I tried one and was able to piggyback to the 'net with no problem. My question is, how do I know that the neighbors are not able to connect to my network? Should I care? Would they be able to hack into my machines, and if so what should I do about it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying for 2 days now to upgrade from Vista Business edition to SP1. The same thing keeps happening. I get through parts 1 and 2 ok, but when the system reboots for part 3, it reboots several times giving me the choice to boot normally or in safe mode, then eventually it stops rebooting and just goes blank. I can reboot successfully in safe mode but the installation of part 3 will ultimately fail (the error code points to not being able to install particular components as a result of being in safe mode) and the system has to regress to the original condition. I tried all the suggestions on the MS Vista upgrade trouble shooting site (as well as several other sites)- including checking for specific updates - none of which apply to my machine - at least that what windows update tells me when I try to install them, checked the disk for errors, and checked the memory for problems. I also turned absolutely everything no- original MS off for start up including antivirus and some other stuff that I have and the same thing keeps happening. Each pass, from upgrade install to fail, and regress back to original condition takes about 5 hours.
I'm running Vista on a quad core machine with 4G of onboard memory (even though Vista 32 can only use about 3 gigs) and a smoking video card so I doubt this is a hardware problem. This problem appears to be similar to the original 'endless reboot' problem that prompted the original halting of SP1 distribution back in the early spring - I thought that problem was fixed! I tried to get real time help from the MS site but got a message that there was a problem with the site. - Good Greif! This is probably the most frustrating MS experience of all time. With all due respect to the folks at MS, if it was your intention to have people to switch from Windows PC's to Apples or even Linux based PC's, I doubt you could have come up with a better plan. I've already switched two of my home computers to Ubutu!
When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

It starts to load up OK, put in the key number in than next step is. To pick custom install or upgrade install, but upgrade choice is grey out. It is disable from using the upgrade choice, I want to choose to pick. I did not purchase Windows Ultimate through Acer anytime upgrade option. It was a store bought software it was cheaper than Acer price they offer. What is the problem with installing Ultimate with Acer computer?

I went to my start menu and searched services.msc and checked to see if plug and play, windows audio endpoint builder, and multimedia class scheduler were all set to startup type automatic & all started. they were. so then i go to Windows Audio, right click to properties, and it is stopped. So i click to start it and it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."
I tried to restore my computer but my restore point is past the point when this issue originated. Also, Conexant Driver is installed and working properly. If I right click on the volume icon with a little red X through it... I can click on Open Volume Mixer, and It says "No Audio Device Installed" Yet, my audio devices are installed.
I just installed windows vista on my laptop because (i dont know why) a message popped up telling me to insert a cd which i had no clue about.
Anyway, when i the setup for windows vista successfully installed, i restarted my laptop. Once i restarted it, some 2 options came. both of the options were windows vista. I don't know how to remove one of the windows vista from my laptop.
Details:
The options come when i turn my computer on.
They come on a black background on startup.
This problem started when i installed windows vista again on my laptop.
I am normally quite good at fixing computers and i don't even need any help, but this is the first time ever i need help for this issue because it has never occured before.
The 1st windows vista option is the new installation.
The 2nd windows vista option is my old installation which i wanted to overwrite.
I am now always using the 1st option because i cant remove my old installation.
I did not do anything to the 2nd option just incase something goes even worse.
This is the only problem on my laptop. Everything else works in its best performance.
My laptops manufacturer is ACER and the model is ASPIRE 5630

I have a 250 GB HDD and a 500 GB HDD. the 250 GB had Vista x64 on it and then I partitioned it with Acronis (after backing it up to the 500 GB HDD) so I could install Windows 7 x64 on the smaller (about 55 GB) partition that I have just made. That didn't work so I reformatted my 250 with Acronis (the backup that I had) and tried to install Win7 on the 250 and just make a small partition from the installation screen. Now when I try to boot up there is just a black screen with a white blinking hash mark in the upper left corner. When I use a boot disk it does show that there is partition on the 250 GB and both Vista and 7 are installed, but for some reason I can't seem to boot to them. Long story short: I want to be able to dual boot to windows vista or windows 7. How do I do that?

When I attempt to open Windows Mail for the first time each day the splash screen appears and then, 9 times out of 10, my computer freezes. This only happens the first time each day. It opens instantly for the remainder of the day. I am forced to power off and reboot which can happen 1 to 3 times before Windows Mail will open. I am running Vista with SP1. I have not installed anything new and no settings have been changed.

I had a notebook computer that I bought and I installed ypops so that I could get my yahoo mail in the new Windows mail program. It went crazy and downloaded 400 of my emails from my yahoo account, which deleted them from there for good, before I could stop it. Well, I sent that computer back because it had a million problems. Now, I have a law suit going on with a company that I paid to customer make some furniture and they are not producing it. My attorney wants copy's of correspondence. Most of those emails were downloaded via ypops from Yahoo into Windows mail on the other laptop that I forgot to back-up or forward to this computer or any other....
Are those emails out there somewhere. Can I set up windows mail now on this computer and somehow have those there. I did not delete them. I guess, in essence I am hoping they still exist "somewhere in cyber space." And if so, how do I set up windows mail now in order to get the same results. I would have to use ypops again I suppose but I am hoping someone has a magic answer.
I have an old computer on which I have installed my purchased copy of Windows Vista Ultimate edition. It has reached its end-of-life and I am about to decommission it. I want to purchase a customized desktop and install the same copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on it after removing it from the old machine (formatting old machine's hard drive). It has all available updates but when I go to the Windows Update site it does not show Vista SP1 , just says there are no new updates available.
I am about to go buy XP Pro and get rid of this dreadful OS, I was only keeping Vista until I could see if SP1 made a difference in the way it runs, but if I can't even access SP1 then there's no point keeping it.
Do you know if Vista still has a 'browser' to see which computer on the netwrok is the master? When I open the Network icon on the desktop, it shows me there are three computers powered on, and it finds them thru my ethernet LAN.
