Mar 23, 2008I just installed SP1 and now the "Search" option is missing from my Start Menu. I checked in the Taskbar and Start Menu settings in the control panel and the options are checked. There use to be an option when you right click a v2i file on the windows explorer, this option said Mount and I think there was a Open option too. The one I really need is the Mount one. May 19, 2008I'm running Vista Home Premium (6.0.6001--sp 1). Since installing Checkpoint VPN client, the Switch User option has disappeared from my shutdown menu. (I've since deinstalled the VPN.) I've read elsewhere that it might be a group-settings issue, and it can be toggled by using the group administration panel. This was for Vista Ultimate, though; trying to run "gpedit.msc" fails with a "not found" error. Is there another way to alter this? Perhaps by hacking the registry? My wife and I switch fairly often between our profiles, so I would like to have the option.

Sep 6, 2009In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start up programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter.

May 12, 2009I had successfully installed win xp pro on my pre-installed vista home computer.
When I used to boot up, I had the option of selecting one of those 2 OS. I begun having problems with xp pro so I "repaired" it using my xp pro cd. Now, I can't boot into either OS. Please help. I have tinkered with the MBR, FIXMBR, FIXBOOt commands but can't get anything to work. All I get when I boot up is the selection of Keyboards,
language and then I get a menu of options such as Repair startup, Memory diagnostics, Recovery (to factory settings) etc., I don't have vista dvd since it came pre-installed on my computer.
I do have xp but am afraid of re-installing xp pro since I have documents on borh drives (each drive contains its own operating system).
For example, my c drive contains vista, (d is recovery on the same hard drive) and xp pro is on a separate physical drive.
I can see that both drives have windows on them but I am unable to boot. I have managed to get vistaboot pro but can't seem to run it.
I can't get xp to run nor can I get vista to run.
Boot Manager, Vista Setup Option
Mar 22, 2010Every time I boot my machine (dual boot - 2 x vista 32 home Premium), the boot manager tries to take me into an incomplete, and unwanted, vista setup option which then hangs the machine. I want to delete that option from the boot manager but it doesn't appear in bcdedit, and that is about as far as my technical knowledge goes. how to get rid of an unwanted vista setup option from the bm?

Nov 2, 2009This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........

May 1, 2009i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...
Start Menu, Task Bar Gone After SP 1
Jun 1, 2009I just installed SP 1 and now the Start Menu and Task Bar are gone. It was a lot of work to install. I'd hate to have to take it back out again. Task Bar wasn't locked but wasn't set to hide either.

Apr 24, 2008I have 2 Hard Drives - 1 for OS the other for Data. Since all my data is on disk D I wanted to change the Documents, Music, and Pictires links on the rhs of the start pane to point to the new location. i did that OK by using properties, move location.however I stuffed it up by changing where "Videos" points. "videos is a link under the users on c:. Anyway, I sent it to the wrong place. When I tried to fix it my documents, pictures and music links were all lost. Somehow i've managed to re-establish the Documents link to point to the correct place (on the Data HDD) but I can't change Music or Pictures. They are just empty and do nothing. If I point to them and right click and select properties there is no "Location" tab, and in fact there is nothing at all.The links are OK in "Favourite Links" when Computer window is open, but they are dead on my start panel right hand side. All the other items in that panel are OK. How can I reset those links to point where I want.

Jul 2, 2008Recently most of the programs in my Start Menu disappeared. Almost everything that disappeared is Microsoft related, like Office. When I rebooted it said that explorer.exe and sprtcmd.exe in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms directory is corrupt and I should run chkdsk. However, chkdsk won't run. I set it to run on reboot but it never does. Then I tried using sfc /scannow but it only got to 71% before saying it can't continue. I tried going into the Programs folder but it says the directory is corrupt or unreadable. I've got Vista Home Premium, and my computer is a Dell XPS M1530.
