Every time I boot my machine (dual boot - 2 x vista 32 home Premium), the boot manager tries to take me into an incomplete, and unwanted, vista setup option which then hangs the machine. I want to delete that option from the boot manager but it doesn't appear in bcdedit, and that is about as far as my technical knowledge goes. how to get rid of an unwanted vista setup option from the bm?
View 5 RepliesI have a dual boot setup that has Vista on one sata hard drive and Windows XP on another sata hard drive. If I remember correctly, I installed XP 1st and than Vista. I now want to keep the current system running with XP and remove the Vista hard drive and install it in a new computer I am building. I'm guessing I will have bootup issues on boot on both pc's once I remove the Vista hard drive.

I can't figure out how to set up dual boot with two complete, but seperate drives already running respective OS's fine.. I had two seperate HD's, one with XP, one with Vista Ult. already on them. I want to be able to dual-boot these but all I can find is setting up dual boot when installing one or the other (Vista w/XP already on or XP w/Vista already on). I have EasyBCD on hand.

First I have two HDD's both are IDE and split in half, one is WD 250 gig with WinXP on it the other is a WD 160 gig with Win 7 RC on it. My MB is an MSI K9 with only 1 IDE socket so I have a PCI card that add's 2 more. If I have it right to make it a dual boot all I have to do is:
1. Connect the WinXP drive and the Win 7 drive one to the IDE and one on the PCI card and run the Win 7 setup disk to repair and create the dual boot.
2. Or do I have to reload the Win 7.

I shrinked the OS partition (160 GB), created new partition (40 GB) for 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. After installation of Windows 7, I cannot see the vista ultimate boot option when I boot my PC. When I used to boot up, I had the option of selecting one of those 2 OS. I begun having problems with xp pro so I "repaired" it using my xp pro cd. Now, I can't boot into either OS. Please help. I have tinkered with the MBR, FIXMBR, FIXBOOt commands but can't get anything to work. All I get when I boot up is the selection of Keyboards,

I am making the upgrade to a RAID1 setup for my multimedia collections. I am using a 250GB boot disk where I have 3 versions of windows installed: XP, Vista, and 7RC. So, this setup is not intended for booting purposes and is intended to be used by my different OSs.
I bought two identical 1T Maxtor HDs and a Sabrent SATA II 3Gbps 4Ports PCI ExpressRAID Card. All items have been installed into my computer. The card's BIOS recognizes the HDs and I formatted and paired the drives there for RAID1. Windows has installed updated drivers for my Sabrent controller.
For some reason I cannot see the drive on my system. I've searched all over for any incite to setting this up without reinstalling windows. Is this at all possible? Is there a program that I can download to setup the array that's similar to Intel's Matrix Storage Manager? Again this is not my primary boot drive.
I have a PC running Vista Business. It will not successful run a repair, I do not find an option (when I boot from the cd) to wipe it out and reload the OS.

So, I reinstalled the operating system disk and put windows back on the PC.
Now when I turn on my PC I get the Windows Boot Manager screen asking to choose operationg system to star with two versions of Vista to choose from. The first on the list is the rebooted (new) version. If I click on the second one, it is my old version with all my old files and programs.
Funny thing is, I am not having any issues with the old version any more.(YET)
Is there anyway to get rid of the rebooted (new) version windows so I can stop getting the windows boot manager whenever I start the PC? I rather keep using the version with all my old programs and files since it seems to be fine.
I ran XP, I installed Vista to the next partition, I want to eliminate XP,but the Vista boot MANAGER is on the XP partition. I tried hiding the XP partition, booting the Vista CD and doing a repair (twice) but when it boots, it tells me NTLDR is missing.

I am picking up a conversation that has been developing in a thread on another topic because I think it is signifacant and should get its own thread. Jawade of Kolibrie Software has been saying that his boot manager can effectively prevent XP volsnap.sys from erasing Vista's shadowcopies in a multiboot scenario. He has been trying a few things to verify this and hopefully he will join this thread and supply some info about it. So far he has verified that restore points and previous versions survive a reboot into XP and a reboot back into Vista.
During the Vista beta program several testers tried some well-known boot managers that were supposed to be able to hide a volume and either they did not function correctly with Vista or they did not hide a Vista volume at a low enough level to prevent XP from damaging Vista files.
It says something in relationship with these words. Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

From what I gather, sp2 fails to install due to GRUB being my boot manager. If anyone has found a work around...besides ditching Vista...share it. Unplugging a drive isn't an option...I have 5 OS's on 2 drives managed by GRUB. I believe GRUB was written to the MBR.

The first one is the old one which doesnt work so everytime i turn my laptop on i have to press down to highlight the new vista option. Now, if I want to remove the hard drive containing the boot manager, the system won't load, which is reasonable given these conditions, nonetheless I DO want to remove this hard drive and still be able to boot, therefore I've searched and queried everywhere and done the following: Physically disconnected the hard drive with the boot manager on it (d and boot with the Vista DVD to run startup repair -> this didn't help, the startup repair found the operation system but didn't recognize any problem, when trying to boot the system would not load, the error I'm getting when booting is disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart.
(reconnected d:, and system boots flawlessly, then) I've manually changed the boot manger (and memory diagnostic, the only other bcd entry on the d: drive) location with bcdedit to c:, and now bcdedit (and VistaBootPro) show the boot manager (and memory diagnostic) in the c: drive, HOWEVER, if I try to boot from that drive I get the same error: disk read error.................
My Vista Ultimate SP2 originally was setup from a variation slimmed by vlite. WMC was completely left out. Now I want to add WMC, while preserving the system as it grew within 3 years. No fresh install. An installation DVD or iso image are at hand. What workaround will do the job?

I'd like to run these old programs but at the cost of uninstalling /reinstalling Vista it's not worth it.
