Won't Run Vista 64 Setup

Apr 9, 2008

I know that the normal way to go about dual boot is to install the oldest OS first, but I just discovered (after a year) some old programs which won't run on my Vista 64 setup. I'd like to run these old programs but at the cost of uninstalling /reinstalling Vista it's not worth it. I have quite a bit of space, so making a new boot partition for ocasional boots - without the uninstall just choose which disk volum to boot from

Can Setup Boots Installation Vista

Sep 10, 2008

if someone could give me some guidance on the following problem. A few days back, it looked like I might have to reload Vista. When I put the supplied Vista DVD in the either of the 2 optical drives, the operating system appeared to boot up as normal from the hard disc. When I go into Setup, the boot order is as follows:-

1.CD-ROM
2.SONY DVD ROM
3.HARD DISK

This is a bit strange as the 2 optical drives that are fitted are

SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615.
SAMSUNG SH-S183 DVD/CD WRITER.

The SAMSUNG was fitted by the company I bought the pc from about 3 months after the purchase because the original SONY DVD Writer would only burn CD'S & not DVD's. The Sony was EIDE but the SAMSUNG is SATA. The Bios does'nt appear to give any details about the SAMSUNG drive so it seems its not been included in the list of boot devices & I do not know how to fix that.....

Dual Boot Setup Vista

Mar 23, 2008

I have a dual boot setup that has Vista on one sata hard drive and Windows XP on another sata hard drive. If I remember correctly, I installed XP 1st and than Vista. I now want to keep the current system running with XP and remove the Vista hard drive and install it in a new computer I am building. I'm guessing I will have bootup issues on boot on both pc's once I remove the Vista hard drive.

Boot Manager, Vista Setup Option

Every time I boot my machine (dual boot - 2 x vista 32 home Premium), the boot manager tries to take me into an incomplete, and unwanted, vista setup option which then hangs the machine. I want to delete that option from the boot manager but it doesn't appear in bcdedit, and that is about as far as my technical knowledge goes. how to get rid of an unwanted vista setup option from the bm?

Vista Home Basic Install Dvd For An 8 Pc Network Setup

Mar 26, 2008

In our Language School we have a Multimedia Language Lab (allowing the school
students to access through user name and password an internet platform to do
the exercise work after each class lesson). This system uses Windows Vista Basic as operating system and is based on a 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN.

1.It is possible to create a Vista Install DVD allowing ??? in case of serious problems with the hardware on one PC ??? to format the hard disk and reload the Operating System, Configuration, Programs and LAN configuration (not exceeding 2 or 3 GB of disk space for the image) just by loading the Install DVD, without the need for calling any expert to solve the situation. I have to explain that recently a similar situation occurred and it took three hours of an expert???s time to reload the whole configuration and programs on the PC concerned.

2.If the answer to the above point is yes, what are the simple steps to follow to achieve what described at above point 1.

Upgrade To X64 From XP X32:vista Setup Files Are Not Win32 Compatible

Apr 19, 2009

I have recently purchased Vista 64bit via digital rivers "Ultimate Steal". I checked through Windows update advisor that it was possible to run this on my machine and it said that it would be (I am running XP pro x32 on an X58i motherboard with i7-920 processor and 6GB ram). As instructed I have downloaded the three files onto my computer (X14-63453.exe, bootwim, bootmgr.efi) and stored them into a "read and write" enabled folder on my desktop. When I run the file "X14-63453.exe" A new folder "Vista" is createdand several subfolders and files extracted but then I get and error message saying "" I believe the problem is that I am trying to install vista x64 from an XP pro x32 OS, and the vista setup files are not Win32 compatible....is this correct. If so what is the work around? In understand there is a trial version of XP x64 for download - Where is it?. Can I install this first and then download the Vista setup files onto my new desktop and proceed that way.

Formatted Hard Drive 3 Times Vista Setup

Apr 1, 2009

I've noticed some files on my hard drive and the Windows folder is reported as being created in 2006.Since 2006 I have formatted my hard drive 3 times using the Vista setup.I know for a fact that the last time I formatted and reinstalled was January 2009. Can someone explain why these files and the Windows folder shows an earlier date?? When selecting the Format command during setup does Windows actually remove everything form the hard drive? I have noticed that the format doesn't take very long, at least not half as long as it used to with earlier versions of Windows. If Windows doesn't actually remove everything form one's hard drive

Vista Setup Network Share File Folder

Jun 2, 2008

I am trying to help someone running Vista Home Premium setup his network to share files and folders with his XP Home laptop. Oddly enough, there are no share options AT ALL. No share buttons or no share options in the context menus -- NOTHING. We've named the network and simply went out to share a printer (which we have the option to share) but it turns itself off. Same in Network and Sharing Center. We turn the options ON and then turn themselves OFF. We've done all the rebooting, etc. and still no go. I have gone through all the disabling of the UAC and ownership and permissions, et. al. but, can't get anywhere without the SHARE OPTION being available. Is his install of Windows Vista Home Premium broken or needing to be reinstalled? Could that be the problem? Could it have been setup improperly? I have successfully done this before on my Vista Business computer and my XP Pro laptop and although i did have a few 'permission' problems, they were at least workable.

"Cannot Extract Windows Vista Setup To Your Hard Drive"

Aug 13, 2009

I have attempted all the following to install. I corresponded with digital river who forwarded me three files for the Vista upgrade. After downloading via FireFox I begin the installation. Once the installation begins I get the following error message: "Cannot extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded." Now, I have troubleshooted this way:

I have unprotected the folder that contains all the files and unclicked the Read Only option. I have attempted to copy and paste the install.wim and the boot.wim files into the source folder that is created after I have begun the install, as someone in the Microsoft Answers Forum suggested. I also tried to burn it to a DVD, which gave me another error message.

This is extremely frustrating as I purchased this OS on discount thinking it is an affordable alternative. I can also see that I am not the only one with this issue. So it would be nice if someone from Microsoft found a solution to this issue. I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 3.

Fan Setup For Best Airflow?

Mar 18, 2009

How does everyone set their fans up for the best maximum airflow? Here is my computer case: Newegg.com - Rosewill R6426-P BK ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases Here is my CPU cooler: Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks

I changed the stock fan that came with the case for a better 80mm fan, which is blowing inwards towards my cpu fan. I have the CPU fan turned so that the back fan is blowing into the back of the fan on the heatsink, so all airflow is coming from the back, through the heatsink towards the front of the case. I had to remove the duct from the side of the tower because the CPU cooler is so freakin' tall it is literally a 1.25" from the wall. So placing a fan in the duct's place is also pretty hard. The other available spot on the side panel also has an 80mm, which i'll upgrade to a 120mm fan. This fan blows inward towards my HUGE video card to try and keep that cool. I also removed all of the front aluminum panels (the ones which are removable when you place in a cd/dvd rom, which helps the air from the back to be blown through the front. Since the cd/dvd rom covers on the case are perforated, air blows through them nicely.

UAC Setup To Avoid Pop Up Window

Jun 28, 2009

Is there any way to setup the UAC so that it will allow designate programs without getting the very irritating pop up window, or program crash that occurs in some cases where the window doesn't pop up. I have tried just turning it off, but it appears Defender turns it right back on again.

I suppose the next step is to turn off Defender.

I understand why this security feature exists, but it gets to be extremely irritating. The most irritating part of it, is that some times I don't get the pop up window and the program I am trying to run simply crashes, or doesn't run correctly The crash is normally a hint to go and run the program specifically as the administrator. Sometimes the error is more deeply imbeded in program or system files and takes for ever to try and find out what the problem is.

I use Acronis backup software which always ran with no problems until one of the more recent Vista x64 updates, then it simply said that it ran but errors were encountered. After pouring over the log files in Acronis, I found that it couldn't run the backup because it didn't have the rights to access the backup drive.

So now things can't be scheduled and I have to run it manually.

There are times when the security features become a real burden. I hope this issue is fixed with Windows 7.

SP1: Setup Did Not Complete. Reverting Changes

Apr 22, 2008

I have an issue with Vista SP1 installing (No seriously! Nobody else having the issue, right??). It gets through 100% of stage 3 of 3, then after a minute or two says the "Setup did not complete. Reverting changes." message. Before the Microsoft super wizard got on the phone with me, I had already done a memory scan, chkdisk, scannow, file cleanup, defrag, nothing helped (I have Home Premium, and I do have the two required updates installed as well). When he connected to my computer, he tried to install right off the bat (a stupid thing to do, considering I wouldn't be calling if I didn't have the issue) and it of course failed. Then after checking to make sure no antivirus etc was active (which I uninstalled the day before) he disabled all non-Microsoft services from startup and disabled my TV card, sound card and graphics card, then tried again. Still didn't install. Lastly he installed some kind of tool from Microsoft's update site and tried to install SP1 again, this time from the standalone 500+mb version. No luck.

He scheduled a call today between 3 and 5pm from one of their research and developement team members to get deeper into the problem, but do any of you have any ideas what's going on?

Here is my computer and it's specs: ...

How To Setup VPN And Network Drive?

Jul 1, 2008

I would like to setup a VPN so that i can share my home videos and pictures with my family across the state. I would like to be able to setup a network drive so that vista media center can monitor it. This way we could turn on vista and browse to the vids or pics and see what is new. This would save a lot of hassle of emailing them all the time. We all have the same dynamic isp, routers and Vista proff or ultimate. So i'm thinking that if i can get 2 computers to work like i want over a VPN then i'll have no problem with the rest of the families computers. I have used Cisco to successfully setup a vpn across country using one computer with vista and the other with xp. Is vista's vpn setup similar to cisco's? Is Vista capable of creating what i described above?

Takes Several Minutes To Run A Setup,

Aug 11, 2009

I'm kinda a great gamer and when i download demos to test incoming games, i try running their setup and it takes a lot of time to start. About 2-3 minutes of waiting before asking if i want to open the file because it was downloaded from the internet (just with the demos i downloaded from the net, sure), and another 2-3 minutes to ask for permission to open it (the account security control or something like that). Then the task appears in Task Manager under "process" tab but it has only 64 kb of ram and it remains that way for another 4-5 minutes. Finally it starts (after about 12-15 minutes total), it installs and here's another problem. When the progress bar arrives to the end, it takes about 10 minutes to tell me installation was completed (during these 10 minutes installation does not busy the cpu at all). This problem occures only with setups, but not only with game's setups, with program's setups too.

I know there's not such a big problem "at least they install", but it's kinda annoying waiting about 25-30 minutes total to play a damn demo or to install a program.Has anyone had that problem? How can i fix it? Here there are my specs (it's an HP laptop, 6730s):

Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 @ 1.80 ghz, 4 mb L2 Cache
2 GB Ram
Intel Mobile 4 Series 128 Mb own ram, 796 total
HDD 150 GB (about 42,8 free at this moment)
Antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit.

1. Connect the WinXP drive and the Win 7 drive one to the IDE and one on the PCI card and run the Win 7 setup disk to repair and create the dual boot.

2. Or do I have to reload the Win 7.
