Boot Manager Issue: Dual Boot 64 Ultimate / Windows 7 Ultimate

Feb 6, 2009

I have a HP pavilion laptop which came with 64 bit vista ultimate pre-installed. I shrinked the OS partition (160 GB), created new partition (40 GB) for 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. After installation of Windows 7, I cannot see the vista ultimate boot option when I boot my PC. When I boot into Windows 7, I still can see the vista partition. But instead of C: it is now displayed as E: I used the HP Recovery Disc to repair windows vista but I can only see a blank blue screen with the mouse pointer. How can I recover the vista?

Ultimate 64-bit Is It Possible To Dual-boot 32 And 64

Aug 14, 2007

Just curious before I install Ultimate 64-bit on my new rig. I see that the Ultimate 64-bit OEM contains both 32 and 64-bit versions on the box. I was initially planning on installing the 32-bit and in a few months (or more) when the 64-bit has better support, re-installing the 64-bit version. Would it be feasible to just get another hard drive and install BOTH versions now on a dual-boot system?

Dual Boot With XP Pro And VISTA Ultimate

Jul 8, 2008

- I've already have XP Pro installed on my Dell Laptop
- Created a 15G partition on the same HDD using Partition Magic
- Went to BIOS and changed the Boot sequence to Boot From CD
- Inserted my Vista CD
- Vista started loading the files.........
- Entered the Product Key
- On the next screen, where you choose where to install vista, I have C, E, and F partitons and I can select each of them, but the "NEXT" is grayed out. I wanted to install the Vista on my F partion (all are NTFS) but the "Next" is grayed out and on the bottom left hand side there is a message saying" windows can not install the OS on this partion".
-Tried to delete the partion, format the partions, but getting the same message.
- 5 months ago I successfully was able to install the VISTA on this laptop, dualbooted with XP. But not anymore.
- My Admin formated my laptop 3 months ago as I moved to a different group within my organization and there wasn't a need to use VISTA. But now, I want to use both XP and VISTA again.

Vista 32 Ultimate Will Not Boot Into Windows From New HDD

Sep 11, 2009

I put in a new 250GB HDD (SATA) as my primary drive. I have two DVD RW (one SATA and one EIDE). I formated and installed a clean version of Vista Ultimate on the 250GB drive using the install tools on the Vista DVD. Restarted the system without issues without the DVD in. Used the User migration tool on the Vista DVD to move the backed up files from my previous install to the clean install.

Now, if I start my computer, it says that the HDD is not a valid boot disk. If I start with the Vista DVD in one of the two DVD drives, it boots into the windows on the C drive without issue. I tried running the Startup Repair from the DVD, and it has not changed it

Lost Ultimate On Boot-Up

Jun 25, 2008

I'm running a workstation w/ 6 hard drives. My 1st O/S on a separate HD is Win 2K. 3 yrs. later I added XP Pro on another HD. Last yr. I added Vista Ult. on a 3rd separate HD. All worked well & after the SCSI initialization I got to choose which of the 3 to use. Foolish me: I decided to load one of the 3 remaining HDs w/ XP Pro so I could use it exclusively for gaming. Now when I power up I still get THREE choices but instead of Win 2K, XP Pro, and Vista, I get XP Pro (new), XP Pro, Win 2K, but Vista is no longer displayed as a boot choice. Any idea what happened and how I can get it re-displayed?

Slow Boot Vista Ultimate

I've tried all the common fixes posted around the net. I get a two minute boot in safe mode and in reg mode with nothing in the startup. I feel that after looking at the bootlog file that it has something to do with drivers that don't load during the boot. According to the log I have dozens and dozens of drivers that apparently don't load. Here is a sample of the log. I don't enclose the whole log because it is very large. I will if necessary:

Ultimate Will Not Boot Up After Installing Updates

Nov 23, 2009

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on several machines without incident. Yesterday I installed it onto my desktop. A Gateway that was previously running Win XP I had backed up my hard drive to an external becuase I wanted to do a clean setup. I chose those uptions as they appeared in the setup screen. The os set up fine. I then ran Windows Update. AFter everything downloaded I let the system install the 87 updates. The computer shyt down. I restaeted it and re-ran updates again. After downloading it installed about 7 more updates and shut down. Now when I turn on the machine. I get the "Splash Screen" tehn a black screen and in the top left corner it says: Booting "Windows Vista".....

That hangs for about two minutes then I get a screen that says Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration. Then a screen that says: The file ARFSPK0N could not be found Press any key to continue. I press a key and I get a Setup Failed and it just basically goes back to the beginning. I have tried installing the Original XP setup disc that came with my computer however it reads it then I get a message saying that Drive "R" could not be read and then my CD drive door opens. There is no disc in that drive as the setup disk is a DVD so it is in the DVD drive. I went into the whole setup screen and chnaged the boot order but nothing seems to work.

Slow Boot Time Computer Running Ultimate X64

Mar 28, 2009

I've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

Boot Failure - Dual Boot Situation

Mar 23, 2008

I have more or less completed all the driver upgrades and windows updates but I keep getting repeated boot failures of Vista. I can always get into Safe mode but in Normal mode the boot fails just after the first spash screen at the point when the screen goes blank to be replaced by the small circular Vista logo. After 2 or 3 attempts it succeeds to load but then the problem seems to reoccur, particularly when I have been back to XP for a while.

I had a similar problem with XP but that seems to have sorted itself out. I have tired looking in the logs for faults and failures but no clues there. I am running an ASUS P5E MB with Intel Quad 6600, 4Gig RAM, GeForce 8800GT and 2x250Gig HDs.

Change From Dual Boot To Single Boot ?

XP is on 1st primary partition [active] and is old. Vista is on 2nd Primary partition and is new. Dual boot info, I believe, is all on the XP partition. Soon I will want to go to Vista only. Do I just delete the XP partition (after imaging it, of course!) and set
Vista partition to active? (Paragon Partition Manager). Will it then automatically boot into Vista (which has no boot.ini)?

Dual Boot Of (2) Windows 7s

I figure that since millions of Windows 7 installations on the CPP have been made, not to mention tap build s and tech beta builds, that it is appropriate to ask this question since

a) It involves a former Vista on a dual boot
b) MSFT has seen fit to put only one NNTP public group up for Win 7 and it is an Italian one and I don't speak Italian or even drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini or Maserati in Englishd
c) Darrell Gorter who has this stuff in his blood is kind enough to frequent the setup group and share his skills.

Dual-boot XP, Can't Boot Vista

Mar 23, 2008

I have installed Vista on my C: disk. After that I installed XP on D: disk. Now I can't boot Vista anymore.
I tried with boot.ini. I've read that there's a program called bcdedit.exe. I tried to make that one work on XP, but I failed. I don't have Vista's DVD, and I'm trying to avoid installing XP again. If there's any way around...I would be gratefull! (Is there any way I can edit bcdedit.exe in XP?)

Windows XP/ Upgrade Dual-Boot

Mar 23, 2008

I apologize, I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but I'm finding so much contradictory and/or outdated information that I honestly don't know what's possible at this point. I'm sure someone out there probably has a form-reply to this at this point! I blame Microsoft entirely for not making things like this at all clear (or at least not easy to find)!

Anyway, I've got Windows XP Pro (SP2) and want to purchase and install Windows Home Premium in a dual-boot configuration *without* wiping out the XP install.

1) Can I do this with an Upgrade copy of Vista, or do I need to buy a Full version?
2) What, if anything, do I need to do to ensure that XP isn't overwritten?

Backup Before Installing Windows 7 In Dual Boot

Jul 29, 2009

i want' to try windows 7, but i don't want to lose vista since windows 7 is just an RC and could still cause some crashes. my option is giving dual booting a try. i have read many tutorials on how to do it, and im pretty confident that i can do it. the problem is, i don't have DVD's to backup my vista, and i still dont know yet how many DVD's my files will consume if i have 50-60 GB in my drive C:i also have external DVD writer, but im not sure if that will work flawlessly since it's external.

My questions are: can i install windows 7 on a different partition without booting from DVD? (I installed my vista over XP without booting from DVD). can i install windows 7 on a different partition using a virtual drive? what are the chances that windows 7 installation will fail during installation? can i still boot vista if windows 7 installation fails? is it possible to do system restore if installation and vista won't boot? and finally, is windows 7 worth the trouble and risk of going thru all these? i will base my decisions on your answers since this is the most intellectual vista forum i've seen so far.
