Show No Option Vista Start Up
Jul 29, 2009I was using Windows Vista on my laptop. Then I installed WindowsXp on a separate drive. I expected my system to be a dual boot system but it shows no option for Windows Vista at start up.

Option Not Show Under Windows Edition
May 13, 2008I have Vista Home Premium, I have read other posts and follwed advise to see if SP1 is installed. The Start - Computer - properties - option does not show it under Windows Edition as described in one post. I go to Windows Update and cant find it listed there as installed updates. Pretty sure now that its not installed. go to the download page and it directs me to Windows update for single PC downloads, WU takes over and says I am fully up to date! Advice in other posts says to let WU take care of it and it will download and install SP1.

Oct 7, 2008I have with Vista and an ad-hoc peer-to-peer wired network. When I run the wizard to connect to a network, it does not show the add ad-hoc network option, only four others for wireles, internet and vpn connection. Also, although I have networked two PC's both running Vista, I cannot ping the second machine from the first and vice versa despite having added routes to both machines. nslookup recognises the ip address of each machine, as does tracert(I should point out that both machines obtain their iP addresses from a router which also allows access to the internet. Both machines can see the internet).

Sep 6, 2009In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start up programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter.

Dec 22, 2005Windows Vista has a new search bar located on the Start Panel. You can use the new search box to find items in the various folders of your Start Menu as well as run any application from it. Just type in the name of the executable and it will search your hard drive for it and run it. This is a great feature but if you have a lot of files on your computer, then be prepared for a short delay since it may have to search for a while.
If you do not want to wait that long, there is a quick way to get the old Run command back on your Start Panel....
Customizing Start Menu Doesn't Show Up Folders
Feb 23, 2009I've recently helped a friend set up his laptop with 64-bit Vista Home Premium. Since the Programs menu (classic start menu setup) looks like an overflowing junk room after everything gets installed, I made it tidier by getting rid of some shortcuts that weren't needed and organizing others in easy to manage category folders. I was able to create all the folders I needed in ...All Users...Start MenuPrograms, but a folder named "Programs" doesn't show up among the other folders when I go to Start > Programs. Since I've never had any problems before with a sub folder by the same name as the folder above it in hierarchy, I'm thinking this might be a bug. When I check with Windows Explorer, the ...All Users...Start MenuProgramsPrograms folder is there along with all the shortcuts that have been put in it, but it's just not showing up on the Start menu. All the other folders I created such as Utilities, Graphics, Multimedia and Internet do show in Start > Programs along with all the shortcuts I put in them.

1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.

It sort of fixed my hibernation, now the Start Menu power button would hibernate, but more importantly the 9 second freezes started up again. Aug 22, 2009ive just reinstalled vista 64bit home premium i downloaded it from a torrent and then validated with my key im coming from 64bit windows 7 where i had 6 gbs of ram all showing up and in use but since ive reinstalled vista half of my RAM is missing i have it running dual channel one set with 4 gbs and the other set 2 gbs the 4 gbs is corsair 800 mhz and the 2 is stock memory whats also 800mhz i was gonna ditch the 2 when i bought the corsair ram recently but decided to keep both sets because my WEI score was 6.4 with just the corsair ram 4gbs but went uptoo 7.2 when i added the other stock ram and both sets were running flawlessly together ive tried both sets on there own and both are working in either slot on motherboard when i just used the 2 gbs it showed up something like 1980 ram in or something and when i just used the 4 set it was showing the same amount as the picture above i was thinking ive got some fake 64bit vista but 64bit programs work.

Jun 25, 2008Yesterday I removed my ATI Radeon X800Pro card because it caused graphics issues. I rebooted the computer and it automatically switched to the nvidia GeForce 6100 GPU onboard graphics. It had a fairly updated Windows driver installed for it. I went to nvidia to download the newest driver. During the installation of that driver, the screen went blank. I waited 5 minutes and nothing happened. I restarted my pc and now it doesn't show the Vista log-in screen anymore. All I get is that little green bar on the bottom and then the screen turns black. All I can see is a tiny little green strip (of the log-in page) on the top of my screen. How can I fix that? I still got XP, which I am using right now. Apr 13, 2008Running Vista Ultimate on a Dell laptop. Suddenly all names show as date modified. Tried the registry 'bags' resets and checking folder type under 'Customize This Folder...' When i right click on the columns, the name column (and a few others) are not available... anywhere. All file and folder names show as the Date modified, except for folder names which show in the Navigation Pane. Tried creating a new Administrator account - same thing, safe mode - same thing. Copied files to another computer and they are fine. Also can access files round about through explorer and then typing in a file name. Tried SFC/scannow - ok. Full virus and spyware scan with AVG AV and AS and Hijack This - clean. System Restore and disk cache are turned off because of good speed increase, so needless to say i cannot go back. Even if i could i would rather know what is causing this issue. Is there an area of the registry which holds the column names? Also not sure if this is related but Search fails to initialize.

Jan 31, 2008I am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder. I can access the XP computer by entering \computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected. When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer. The XP side works 100%
The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up. For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.
