View 4 RepliesWhatever happened to the file transfer program Alohabob? Microsoft bought the company a few years back and there were reports it was going to be integrated into Vista. I cannot find it anywhere on my Vista system. Was it ever implemented? If not, it certainly should have been. Anyone wishing to transfer files from a previous version of Windows would find it most useful.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a simple text file with a certain word in it. I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it. Windows 2000, linked by network, finds it within a second.
I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc
etc
It just doesn't work. Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in windows2000? I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. But not having a working search function doesn't look that "ultimate" to me.
I have done a clean install of Vista Ultimate (64), and since then, everytime I start my computer, it fails to boot correctly. It passes the BIOS page, starts the animated bar at the bottom of the page, and a few seconds later, the screen goes blank, and my VDU gives the messgae, "NO SIGNAL" After about a minute, the system reboots to the BIOS page again and continues up to the animated screen, and stops again. After it self boots for a second time, I get the SAFE MODE option screen. If I leave it on START WINDOWS NORMALLY, and leave it to complete the 30s count down, It boots again, and then completes the boot into Vista. If at the count down screen, I press enter, it goes into a boot loop that doesn't stop until I press the reset button on my box.? I have done a re-install twice and problem continues.
View 8 Replies View Relatedrunning Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When you log into Windows, you immediately get the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working". Then it says explorer is restarting, restarts your desktop, then is ok for about 3 seconds. The error then pops back up and it is stuck in that loop.
It started when he clicked on some popup he shouldn't have. I removed a trojan identified by Mcafee as exploit-byte verify. I have also disabled all startup programs and services (except windows services) through msconfig. However, I am still getting this error popup. Unfortunately, he had previously turned off the system restore option and got rid of the recovery partition.
I have to buy a new computer and am very reluctant to use VISTA (I personally like XP Home). However, there aren't a whole lot of options out there in the stores.
One option I did hear about is buying a computer with VISTA installed and with the option of downgrading (free) to Windows XP Pro.
I was using Windows Vista on my laptop. Then I installed WindowsXp on a separate drive. I expected my system to be a dual boot system but it shows no option for Windows Vista at start up.

I want to delete that option from the boot manager but it doesn't appear in bcdedit, and that is about as far as my technical knowledge goes. how to get rid of an unwanted vista setup option from the bm?

View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has Lenovo laptop that runs Vista Ultimate, the laptop itself is a little under a year old. Earlier this year, October-ish, she started her laptop to find the Cannot Find Operating System message. She took it to the tech department at the university we go too and they backed up all her info and had to reinstall Vista. We it has happened again. She said the recovery way didn't work and she had to reinstall Vista, this time losing all her pictures and everything.
What is causing this? I really want to make sure it doesn't happen a third time to her. I have read that some say it is the hard drive but I think if that was the case, she couldn't reinstall Vista or do anything to the laptop as the hard drive would be loose or fried.
Vista Home Premium 2. New system board and processor. Won't boot. An i7 950 and gigabyte board with high speed 1600 memory. Doing repair doesn't work. Reports something wron with system timings/speed etc. as well could be. Memory folks (OCR) ask me to run memtest400 (it passed all the vista diagnostics).
In install I go to command prompt and try to run mt400.exe. It says, "The system can not find the file." If I do dir e:mt400.exe it fins it just dandy. I tried copying it to a number of other places but get the same response. Even copied it to the loading directory under a number of folders. Now what? Is it impossible to run exe files in vista installer?

I wanted to hibernate my computer but the options weren't there so I found this page and entered the commands into the Command Prompt: How to Re-enable Missing Hibernate Option in Windows Vista? - Tweaking with Vishal
It sort of fixed my hibernation, now the Start Menu power button would hibernate, but more importantly the 9 second freezes started up again. I quickly ran the Hibernation File Cleaner in Disk Cleanup which is apparently what removed the hibernation option in the first place, but no luck, hibernation was now gone and the freezes still continued....................
I have a less than simple couple questions. Background,Dual boot PC (XP and Vista),No longer need XP as I am happy with Vista.XP is installed to a raid array of 2 80Gb SATA HD Vista is installed to an IDE HD,
1) What I want to do Reinstall Vista to the raid array Get rid of the boot loader option that asks XP or Vista at start up Want a clean install of Vista on the raid when done, not really interested in executing an upgrade
2) Concerns I have several media licenses (wma's from Walmart Music Store) on Vista on the IDE drive.,Questions for the group ,Could you tell me the best way to do #1,Can the windows easy transfer keep the media licenses or do I have to go through Wal-Mart to get the licenses reactivated? Or are there other options for the licensing of the WMAs
My laptop is doing so weird and wild stuff, and I'd much rather take care of this problem myself (with the help of the internet, of course) than take it to a rotund egghead who will probably press three buttons, fix it completely, and charge me five hundred dollars. So here's the deal: First, when I was to click on, say, a Picture folder, the folder will load up but all the thumbnailed images of all my pictures will be the same stock Windows image. Like, I can't preview any of my pictures by looking at their thumbnails anymore. So that was a problem, and it's still a problem. Haven't fixed that one. Now recently, when I want to open a program, say Itunes or Firefox, instead of doing exactly that, it takes me to a Windows 'Open With' subscreen and asks me with WHICH program I'd like to open....the program I'd like to open. It's maddening.
My Macafee isn't opening any more. I just did a Dell System Update last night but it said it didn't find anything. I ran an Ad-Aware that didn't find anything. And to top it all off, for some reason my computer simply cannot check for new Windows Updates.I have no idea what's going on. Oh and if it matters my keyboard is all wonky. Not that that's an issue anybody here can help me with but I thought I'd mention it. My laptop is only a year or so old so I'm not sure why it's having all these issues. Oh and I don't know what kind of Vista I have. 32? 64? How do I find that out? heart and soul for any assistance anyone can give.
Would this show up in restore point history or is there another way to find this info?

All of these settings I can find in the XP Registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftFaxUserInfoReceiptEMail(dword), ReceiptAttachFax(dword) and ReceiptAddress(string). However, I cannot find these same settings in Vista Registry. I can set these each time I send a fax in Vista under ToolsOptions, but it is a pain to have to set these everytime I send a fax in Vista. Where can I find the equivalent Vista Registry values?
