I have vista on my Sony VIO and all has been well for the last 6 months but yesterday I turned the laptop on and the Sony screen came on as usual but then insted of windows starting I have just a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner

View 4 Replies View RelatedAll I want to know is how to get rid of the network on Vista and start again. In my own way I think I was happier with the problems of W98 as I felt I had some control. I have 4 computers networked on XP. I'm new to Vista. Started the new system, got connection to the internet with no problems. Allocated a workgroup name of WORKGROUP, when I really wanted WG (the name of my existing group on XP) I can see the Vista computer from my XP computers, but cannot see the XP computers from Vista. Also, for example the folder "Program Files" on C of the Vista computer has been shared to all (no restrictions) and this shows up on the XP computers, but they are still refused access. I don't seem to be able to delete anything in Vista. I want only to delete WORKGROUP in Vista and I'll start again (with more care). Meantime I have started to read this NG and might find answer.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem. I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit dual boot with linux in a Toshiba Laptop. When computer successfully starts there is no problem in any OS. But the problem is to start vista. After working at night I turn off the machine and in the morning when I start, the vista roller icon just rolls, it can't proceed, sometimes it restarts saying that unmountable boot volume. But if I do a hard shutdown (by power button) and start again then machine starts as normally as if there is no problem at all and run all day smoothly (can stop and start multiple times). So it is the problem of starting machine first after several hours of last shutdown. And it is not a one-of problem, it is happening last several days.
Another point, when computer starts successfully it makes a click sound during the vista roller animation and then it starts, no click sound means it can't start. I have installed SP1 recently, the problem occurred even before that. There is another big problem is that I can't go back to XP as no XP (pro, pro+sp1, pro+sp2, pro+sp3, 64bit) can't be installed in my machine as none of them can find a hard drive although the machine came with XP preinstalled.
I just installed a fresh Vista x64 on a (temporary, just for the fun/experimenting) SATA disk, while I wait for my new SAS drives to arrive. After the install it all was ok-ish (experience index on the drive was only 2.3, so pretty slow compared to my old XP machine). The rest of my system all shows 5.9's But after fiddling around with new drivers and tips and trick I learned from this forum, it all went downhill from here. Navigation is very sluggish and the boot up time is 445 seconds (!) I did about everything I could find on this forum to speed up the OS, but no luck. Is there a tool available that helps me to find out which process/driver is causing the delay? Something like Bootvis for XP.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista won't start up anymore. Various problems occur during the start up that prevent it from starting up. It occurred around 3pm or 4pm today when i was just on the internet and talking with my friend on MSN and then BAM! BSOD! The PC rebooted itself and came back up, but then it began giving me a looping 'windows explorer.exe has stopped working' error. So I rebooted again.
I tried Last known good configuration and it didn't work. Gives me a flashing BSOD and the PC restarts itself. Attempts to boot into normal mode sometimes brings BSOD and sometimes just stays black before the circular Windows vista logo that should appear.......
The switch to Vista has been tough for me. Lost my computer when I was doing an online college test and a storm came up. Our well pump got hit and fried my XP. I MISS my XP! It's been a real hassle trying to get things to work with Vista. Which leads me to my current dilemma...I don't know if my computer caught a bug - Kaspersky and TrendMicro Housecall don't find anything - or what, but for some reason, I lost the Windows Installer. Finally got that back, but I then "lost" my Office 2000 Pro program.
All the icons for all those files were the "generic" icons. I uninstalled Office, then reinstalled it. It seemed like things were working until I went to open my Goodsol Solitaire program. The Office installer opened and said the program was not installed and did I want to install it now? It then automatically went into the install mode. But, it would do that, then start all over.
So, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it again. Same thing. Also, now when I want to open a Word doc, it does the same thing. When I did the install, I told the program to install all to run from my computer. I also went to open my Picture Viewer this morning and the same thing came up - Office is not installed...What can I do?
I just built a Vista Ultimate x64 box, after a lot of effort I finally have most of my old Win2K Pro applications workings except for Real VNC. I have three machines in the work group, unfortunately one is Win2K Pro, XP Home and now the Vista x64. I think due to the Vista firewall or something else it will NOT let other machines access the Vista box, but I can access the other machines just fine from the Vista box. The work group seems to work fine. I am able to see/edit files on each computer Hdd.
The main problem as I have narrowed it down to, is that Vista box does NOT start in the VNC Server (service) mode. And I dont know how to get it to start. When I goto Start>Real VNC>Start VNC Server Service. It says the service is already running but I don't see the icon with the IP address in the task bar.
What's the quickest route to take for a smudged/blurry Vista sticker? My wife uses a stand for her laptop and the rubber pads have made the serial key unreadable. I'm just not sure if my best start point is the laptop manufacturer or Microsoft. Anybody else been through this situation that may have a few tips?

I managed to make a set of backup dvds through the HP backup system just before the computer completely died. Vista Home Premium does not recognize these backup dvds, even though it does show that there are files on each of the dvds. Is there any way to retrieve the information on them?

I check yahoo for my home page and my search engine, check "don't ask me again" and save. However when I start firefox again, it goes to the firefox welcome page and the same box pops up again. Anybody know what's going on? This is a recent phenomenon, and happens no matter which search engine or home page I select.

problem I have is that I do not have vista installation dvd. I am currently studying abroad in Rome and will take more time than I have to receive the dvd in the mail. None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?
I am running Windows Vista Premium Home SP1. When I boot my computer, Windows Defender doesn't start automatically. It works fine if I start it manually. I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.

I started up my computer and it would show the moving loading bar thing and then it would boot up again in a cycle. I tried to use the command prompt to fix the boot loader. After that, the computer would not load up the opening page with the user accounts and stuff. All it showed was a black screen with a mouse (which i could move). Even more surprising is that the recovery hard drive won't boot up either and the recovery disks don't work either. I tried system restore and it told me that there were no recovery points made.

Unfortunately i dont have my disc with installation so i cant reboot and repair my system. I was playing a game and my computer just switched off. When you turn it on it makes strange noises. Three sounds. One long and two short. Then it gives me option to repair it through instalation cd or start computer normaly. Rebooting windows normally and it keeps crashing once the log on screen appears. Tried the safe basic safe mode which loads, but the safe mode with networking and command promopt options do not load - windows stops. Tried the vista repair with the cd but that stops too once the 100% bar has completed. Chkdsk fails as well. I haven't tried building a recover disk yet,

Until several months ago, I was able to scan in Vista Ultimate (SP1). Recently, however, when I start WFS.exe, nothing happens at all. I don't see the application in my task list or on the screen.
