I have put a new hard drive in my case, just for a bit of extra storage. It is set to a slave drive but when it is plugged in and i start my computer vista wont boot. I am stumped with this one.
View 3 RepliesWhen I try to boot Vista (Home Premium 32bit), the loading screen with the green bar doohicky shows up followed by a black screen with the mouse cursor. It oscillates between "working" and regular cursor but in the end, the computer just restarts and it does that again if I try to boot it. This probably happened because I system restored right before getting this problem, but I'm not absolutely sure. View 5 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
when i start my computer i get nothing no icons start menu or anything but i do get a my documents window and from there i have to ctrl alt delete then go to file run and run explorer does anyone know how to make it to where i dont have to do all that stuff to run explorer basically does anyone know how to make it where when i start my computer it is normal with explorer running?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have windows xp installed right now and I dual booted with vista by re-partitioning my hard drive. After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. I am now stuck with the windows vista boot loader which persistantly telling me that the windows vista files are not present etc. etc. Is there any way that I can delted the vista bootloader and go back to using the xp bootloader?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe computer(hp m9150f) just won't start up. I've tried running CHKDSK and startup repair but I keep getting an error message saying that it was unable to fix it. Let me just say that the computer with the problem is not mine but my family's. I rarely use it, so I don't know what they might have done to it. They told me they had some important files inside the computer so they don't want me to do an hp system restore before they saved the files. So, what I've came up with is to do a vista upgrade first, so then they'd have access to their files. Then I would use the hp system restore to restore everything back to the normal. Can anybody here tell me if this would work and also if there's any other way to fix it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried everything possible doing all the research on the net as possible and seeking HP tech support. Basically, my laptop won't start anymore. When I startup the computer, it just abruptly shuts down after 2-minutes. I tried reseating the RAM, the Hard drive, other things HP told me but all to no avail.
I have basically given up I think...I had one of these sent in when I had my warranty and HP supposedly fixed it. My whole life is on this computer. I was thinking of getting another comp if I can't fix this (I don't know what is wrong with it?) but what would happen to all the valuable materials and software on it? I have the hard drive still? Is there a device they sell I can hook up my hard drive as an external hard drive if I plugged it in with a device or something?
Just abt 6 mnths ago i bought an Acer Intel Pentium D with 447 mb RAM & 140 GB but just this past week everytime i switch the computer off it doesnt come back on it doesnt start or boot The monitor is just black im even scared to switch it off in case it never comes back on .

View 6 Replies View RelatedIs it normal when I turn on my computer that it first saids dell then the yellow greenish bar that got left to right then my screen go black with just the mouse pointer showing then to the windows logo then the welcom screen and finally my desktop? My main question is is it normal for the mouse pointer to be there for a few seconds before the circular windows logo appears? All together it take about a minute to a minute and a half to get to the desktop. Also sometimes when I do get to my desktop my sidebar gadgets are in the incorrect order. Is that a problem?

She is having a huge problem. Whenever she starts her computer, it starts up normally, and goes all the way to the log in screen. You can log in and everything seems fine. It takes about 30 seconds from the time that it shows the accounts to choose from until it automatically restarts. I let the battery completely drain and am recharging it. It is still auto restarting. Her AV was up to date and no problems there.
I have a new Acer Aspire computer running on Windows Vista. I've had it set up for a week now, running every day without any problems. Today, I switched on the computer and before Vista loaded, the computer shut down on its own. I tried again and this time got a screen asking if I want to run a start-up diagnostic. I chose that and the computer shut down again. I switched on again and this time Vista loaded and everything was ok. Apart from installing daily important Window Vista updates, I haven't changed anything on the system.

I may have to restart several times before it will fully start up. I ran the Western digital utility and the hard drive failed. So I installed a new hard drive and went from XP32 to Vista64. Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5 GHz, 4 GB Ram, Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT.
First time I started it up It worked fine. Then I installed some programs (two games, a DVD media player, MSN Messenger).
The first few times I restarted the PC it was fine, but then after Windows Vista installed the Updates it rebooted and now it reboots EXTREMELY slow. And this on the first day!
It takes at least 10 minutes at the Bios-Screen and then when it is done there it slowly (another 5 min at least) to start windows.
After start-up everything works fine.
What should I do? Did I do something wrong during an install?
I neve had such problems with XP, although removing McAfee AV really quickened the start up (not the initial Bios Booting though) whern I had XP.
i recently formatted and reinstalled windows on my computer and for some reason i have had nothing but trouble since. a run down of my problems, i had 4gb of ram now she will only run on 2gb, she used to be really fast at booting up and shuting down and now i can flick her on and have my breakfast before she has even thought about doing anything. I had a nosey in the event logger and amongst the hundred of errors daily, the one mark BOOT ERROR, is this one.
no viruses, hard drives are defragged and check disked. for the record when she is on she is fine, no problems, just booting up and shutting down it starts playing up

I have an Acer Extensa laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. Its been working great for over a year now untill yesterday when all of a sudden it wouldn't boot up properly. It continued to go to start-up repair, but that kept on failing. After trying all other tools, (system restore had no restore points for some odd reason)... I tried safe mode. That did not work. It instead went back to the start-up repair screen. The same warning message popped up everytime it failed "Cannot repair automatically, click finish blah blah blah". When I bought this laptop from Best Buy, I did not recieve any type of Disk for Vista, it was already loaded on there... I would rather not do a clean install.

Apparently one day after i installed a Windows Update, my computer went haywire. It just wouldnt start up and made a couple beeping sounds. I took my ram out and put it back in and my cpu started up however the boot time took 5-10mintues to start up, i didnt exactly time it but it took much longer then my usual 30secs - 1min startup when my cpu was fine. I tried to fix it by changing the number of processors running and changing my startup programs but nothing worked. Now i leave my cpu on hibernate where it would be much quicker to logon rather then shutting my cpu down and going through that whole process. I decided to factory restore it and it still took 5 - 10mins.is it my hardware?

I double click on the icon and it comes up with the UAC popup i click yes and then nothing happens. i tried it like a half hour ago and still nothing.
My vista run laptop will not eject once you've saved something, it says its finalising the disc, then the computer crashes and the CD just spins round for literally hours, the only way to stop this is to turn off the computer 'emergency like' as its frozen. This is really bugging me as I can't save anything to disc or read any discs without my computer crashing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI own a Lanparty nf4 sli dr motherboard and have recently downloaded and flashed the latest bios from the manufacturer's website. As recommended by the manufacturer, I used winflash to flash the bios. Everything seemingly went well, and the program asked to reboot and I did. Now the computer won't start up. It will get as far as the motherboard logo, but not far enough for me to entire the bios. I don't know what to do. I tried to contact the manufacturer via the phone and have been put on waiting every time.? My computer does not have a floppy drive by the way.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWow...I have not been very happy the past couple of days...here's what happened: Yesterday afternoon, I turned on my computer, and it wouldn't start. Turns out it was a crcdisk.sys problem. To fix it, I went out and got a new HD (needed a new one, it was on sale, didn't want to lose the data on my old boot), installed Vista and SP1 clean, and now it works like a charm.
Today, I go to put my fourth gig of RAM in, and I tried to install the KB929777 update, but I got the "your system does not need this" error. So I tried to just put the 4th gig in, and low and behold, it froze at start-up. (Interestingly enough, I didn't get a BSOD, but I got a crcdisk.sys error...whether or not this was the initial problem, I'd rather not wonder). Took out the 4th gig again, and it starts up fine; slick, fast, and smooth. I would really like to be able to use all of my RAM, seems as how I did pay for it and all...I've got Mushkin XP2-6400 sticks that have been really reliable so far.
Boot from a cold start now takes about 95 seconds. Standby takes 9 seconds. Recover from standby takes about 5 seconds. Shutdown takes 24 seconds. I've already reduced WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 5 seconds, with no apparent penalty. There are no unnecessary startups, though I have not begun snipping away Services. What else can I do to accelerate both ends of the cycle?

I have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?
I have Windows 7 and Vista Dual booted and was attempting to to shrink my Vista partition in Computer Management while in Win 7. I was able to make a "New Volume " at 2.8 GB but after rebooting, when i go into Vista, I get a quick Blue then it reboots. Win 7 works fine.

This problem started after I ran windows update a few days ago. its asked me to try putting the vista dvd in and run a repair, but that failed miserably. other things I would like to point out is that I am running a Raid (Stripe) on my system drive, so I cannot just take the discs out to recover the data. Is there anyway I can solve this issue whilst keeping the operating system intact? finally i'm running the OEM version of vista....I'm feeling pretty fed up as most of my important data is on these drives and ironically I was going to purchase a larger backup disc this month when I get paid.....

I have a 250 GB HDD and a 500 GB HDD. the 250 GB had Vista x64 on it and then I partitioned it with Acronis (after backing it up to the 500 GB HDD) so I could install Windows 7 x64 on the smaller (about 55 GB) partition that I have just made. That didn't work so I reformatted my 250 with Acronis (the backup that I had) and tried to install Win7 on the 250 and just make a small partition from the installation screen. Now when I try to boot up there is just a black screen with a white blinking hash mark in the upper left corner. When I use a boot disk it does show that there is partition on the 250 GB and both Vista and 7 are installed, but for some reason I can't seem to boot to them. Long story short: I want to be able to dual boot to windows vista or windows 7. How do I do that?
