What's the quickest route to take for a smudged/blurry Vista sticker? My wife uses a stand for her laptop and the rubber pads have made the serial key unreadable. I'm just not sure if my best start point is the laptop manufacturer or Microsoft. Anybody else been through this situation that may have a few tips?
View 8 RepliesI keep getting a yellow exclamation point on windows start navigation sound I can go in and select it and it works for the time it is selected. but as soon as I reboot the yellow exclamation point comes back how do I fix this can someone help me please it annoying and aggravating to have to turn that on all the time. I even did a system restore back to yesterday thinking I did something to it no go still dose it. nothing else broken all works good sound everything just not this one.
View 9 Replies View RelatedGetting the time out error 0X81000101 when I try to set a restore point on Vista X64 Home Premium. This happened right after trying to install a Creative external 24bit Live sound blaster driver updates. I have read many threads and have done the following to no avail:
Turned off AVG free 8.5 Resident Shield. Ran disk clean up and rebooted. Turned off System Restore as Administrator, rebooted, turned on System Restore for C: drive only. Made sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic and Started. I have read a few regedit posts but am reluctant to try that yet since I can't make a copy of my registry right now with the failed System Restore. When I do try to create a System Restore point, it hangs forever. Task manager says it is not responding.
I've been using Linux for a while exclusively lately due to some heavy issues I had with Vista a few months ago. While I was running Linux I decided to make my laptop OS Neutral. I Removed the Windows sticker, sanded down the windows key, and removed the OEM Windows Sticker on the bottom. My questions are:
1. Is it legal to remove this sticker?
2. Without the code that is on the sticker, will I still be able to use the Upgrade Disc to Windows 7 since my Vista will still pass WGA or do I need the codes that were on the sticker? If it was illegal then this whole situation is hypothetical)
I bought a retail of Windows Vista Ultimate from Newegg. Part of the product key sticker is ripped off and I'm missing the last 2 digits. I don't even know how to contact MS support because they ask for a PID and I can't find that on the box or anything. All I have is the disks, Certificate of Authenticity, and the product key with 2 missing digits.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my system's motherboard, chip, and ram and ran into a big problem. When I booted up for the first time, Vista started to boot up then reset. When I ran recovery, it told me some drivers were corrupted (probably the old hardware). I ran the motherboard disk and installed the new drivers and to make a long story short, it didn't work. Add that to the fact that I can't find my serial number sticker and I'm screwed. Is there a way to find my serial using the Dos prompt or can windows pull my serial off my hard drive if I reinstall?

I have 4 computers networked on XP. I'm new to Vista. Started the new system, got connection to the internet with no problems. Allocated a workgroup name of WORKGROUP, when I really wanted WG (the name of my existing group on XP) I can see the Vista computer from my XP computers, but cannot see the XP computers from Vista. Also, for example the folder "Program Files" on C of the Vista computer has been shared to all (no restrictions) and this shows up on the XP computers, but they are still refused access. I don't seem to be able to delete anything in Vista. I want only to delete WORKGROUP in Vista and I'll start again (with more care). Meantime I have started to read this NG and might find answer.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem. I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit dual boot with linux in a Toshiba Laptop. When computer successfully starts there is no problem in any OS. But the problem is to start vista. After working at night I turn off the machine and in the morning when I start, the vista roller icon just rolls, it can't proceed, sometimes it restarts saying that unmountable boot volume. But if I do a hard shutdown (by power button) and start again then machine starts as normally as if there is no problem at all and run all day smoothly (can stop and start multiple times). So it is the problem of starting machine first after several hours of last shutdown. And it is not a one-of problem, it is happening last several days.
Another point, when computer starts successfully it makes a click sound during the vista roller animation and then it starts, no click sound means it can't start. I have installed SP1 recently, the problem occurred even before that. There is another big problem is that I can't go back to XP as no XP (pro, pro+sp1, pro+sp2, pro+sp3, 64bit) can't be installed in my machine as none of them can find a hard drive although the machine came with XP preinstalled.
I just installed a fresh Vista x64 on a (temporary, just for the fun/experimenting) SATA disk, while I wait for my new SAS drives to arrive. After the install it all was ok-ish (experience index on the drive was only 2.3, so pretty slow compared to my old XP machine). The rest of my system all shows 5.9's But after fiddling around with new drivers and tips and trick I learned from this forum, it all went downhill from here. Navigation is very sluggish and the boot up time is 445 seconds (!) I did about everything I could find on this forum to speed up the OS, but no luck. Is there a tool available that helps me to find out which process/driver is causing the delay? Something like Bootvis for XP.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI hope this is the correct group. I've been running XP Pro for quie some time and recently installed Vista using Partition Magic and have also installed Vista BootPro. I planned a full migration of all of my data from XP today but cannot boot into XP for some reason. I was going to export or save vital data from XP, so this is quite a bummer. I cannot enter Safe Mode nor use Last Known Good Config options for XP. My box makes it up to the "Starting Windows" screen and hangs there. After exporting the data I require from XP and saving to disk I was going to manually install all of my progs into Vista (Quite a plan for the 4th, huh?)Is there a method to utilize an XP Restore Point from Vista to enable me to boot into XP?

New computer running Vista, I downloaded the viewer and when I click on a link it comes up with the message to make sure it is linked to the correct program. I have gone into default assoc and PPS is connected to Power Point Viewer. It worked on XP Pro computer, what do I need to do? Have restarted after downloading thinking maybe that would work.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy brother runs Vista and is using Windows mail. He can't view ..pps files. I got him to download the microsoft Power Point Viewer. This program does work on his computer and he can view them now, however, when he clicks on a .pps file from windows mail it tells him he needs to associate the file. So, we did that thru the control panel and it says the Microsoft viewer is the default program. So what do we do now? How can we get it so that he just clicks on the .pps attachment from his windows mail and have it automatically run?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista won't start up anymore. Various problems occur during the start up that prevent it from starting up. It occurred around 3pm or 4pm today when i was just on the internet and talking with my friend on MSN and then BAM! BSOD! The PC rebooted itself and came back up, but then it began giving me a looping 'windows explorer.exe has stopped working' error. So I rebooted again.
I tried Last known good configuration and it didn't work. Gives me a flashing BSOD and the PC restarts itself. Attempts to boot into normal mode sometimes brings BSOD and sometimes just stays black before the circular Windows vista logo that should appear.......
The switch to Vista has been tough for me. Lost my computer when I was doing an online college test and a storm came up. Our well pump got hit and fried my XP. I MISS my XP! It's been a real hassle trying to get things to work with Vista. Which leads me to my current dilemma...I don't know if my computer caught a bug - Kaspersky and TrendMicro Housecall don't find anything - or what, but for some reason, I lost the Windows Installer. Finally got that back, but I then "lost" my Office 2000 Pro program.
All the icons for all those files were the "generic" icons. I uninstalled Office, then reinstalled it. It seemed like things were working until I went to open my Goodsol Solitaire program. The Office installer opened and said the program was not installed and did I want to install it now? It then automatically went into the install mode. But, it would do that, then start all over.
So, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it again. Same thing. Also, now when I want to open a Word doc, it does the same thing. When I did the install, I told the program to install all to run from my computer. I also went to open my Picture Viewer this morning and the same thing came up - Office is not installed...What can I do?
I just built a Vista Ultimate x64 box, after a lot of effort I finally have most of my old Win2K Pro applications workings except for Real VNC. I have three machines in the work group, unfortunately one is Win2K Pro, XP Home and now the Vista x64. I think due to the Vista firewall or something else it will NOT let other machines access the Vista box, but I can access the other machines just fine from the Vista box. The work group seems to work fine. I am able to see/edit files on each computer Hdd.
The main problem as I have narrowed it down to, is that Vista box does NOT start in the VNC Server (service) mode. And I dont know how to get it to start. When I goto Start>Real VNC>Start VNC Server Service. It says the service is already running but I don't see the icon with the IP address in the task bar.
I have Vista Home Premium 32bit. Vista became corrupted to the point where I was not even able to start in safe mode. I managed to make a set of backup dvds through the HP backup system just before the computer completely died. Vista Home Premium does not recognize these backup dvds, even though it does show that there are files on each of the dvds. Is there any way to retrieve the information on them?

I fact I so none after 1/31 except for an uninstall I did. I have plenty of free disk space (100 gb free of 149 gb). Can I add a second router that is wireless to my wired network with having to load router software on a second computer. Is this even possible. My network consists of my PC, HP M8300f desktop PC as home base/client and cable modem with linksys wired router, BEFSR41 connected to a dell 2400 desktop. I am wanting to add a linksys wireless router WRT54G some where in the living room for and access point. Do I have to load the software on the Dell PC or can I just plug in router to wall socket and connect wirelessly that way.
