Undo Restore Point Failed
May 18, 2008When I try to undo a restore point, a get an error message that the operation has failed because of an unknown error. Then none of my other restore points will work, either.

System Restore Not Working: Unable To Make A Restore Point
Apr 11, 2008I have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

Jul 4, 2008I hope this is the correct group. I've been running XP Pro for quie some time and recently installed Vista using Partition Magic and have also installed Vista BootPro. I planned a full migration of all of my data from XP today but cannot boot into XP for some reason. I was going to export or save vital data from XP, so this is quite a bummer. I cannot enter Safe Mode nor use Last Known Good Config options for XP. My box makes it up to the "Starting Windows" screen and hangs there. After exporting the data I require from XP and saving to disk I was going to manually install all of my progs into Vista (Quite a plan for the 4th, huh?)Is there a method to utilize an XP Restore Point from Vista to enable me to boot into XP?

Feb 3, 2010In the Triggers tab for Task Scheduler for System Restore it shows a trigger at system startup but there is no system restore point that was created this morning when I started my system. I fact I so none after 1/31 except for an uninstall I did. I have plenty of free disk space (100 gb free of 149 gb). How can I set this so that every day when I start my system System Restore creates a restore point?

Jul 31, 2009Vista 64bit has been running really well on my desktop after a clean install in March. Suddenly, Windows update is failing to install, because it can't create a systen restore point. When I try to create one in System Restore, manually, it fails also, citing the shadow file timeout, or some such.....I am worried, because I can't use backup, either! Anyone know what's going on?

May 16, 2008I have task scheduler set up to create a restore point once a day. The history panel shows that the restore point is created on schedule, yet it does not show up in the system restore panel under system properties/system protection. Nor does the free space on the hard drive shrink by a gig or so, as I'd expect. All the settings in task scheduler seem to be correct, and I can create restore points manually. It's just that the automatic feature does not work. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? I'm using Vista Home Premium. Oodles of space allocated for restore points.

System Restore Point Being Created At Every Bootup
Feb 12, 2009I am running Vista Home Premium x64. Everytime I bootup, the Language Pack removal service runs (as it is supposed to, apparently).
However, Vista seems to treat this as a significant system event, which triggers a restore point to be created. The restore point creation is slowing down access to my hard disk everytime I reboot.
When I look at the list of restore points that Vista has created, a restore point is created at every bootup due to the event “Uninstall: Language Pack Removal”. I can see the list by running “System Restore”, then selecting “choose another restore point” and clicking Next.
Any idea how to stop the restore point being created at every bootup? I assume there’s a good reason Vista runs the Language Pack removal service at every bootup, so I’d rather keep that running.
I also want a restore point created when there is a software install/uninstall, so want to keep the system restore service running, too.

Unable To Create System Restore Point
May 30, 2009when i tried to create a restore point an error message is being displayed. it says " could not create the scheduled task for the following reason task image is corrupt or has been tampered with (0x80041321)" what does it mean. i am running on vista ultimate x64

what i did was under system properties page, i clicked system protection tab on the left side checked the boxes( all system drives ie hard disk drives) and clicked apply then the message i described was popping out and when clicked create also the same message is being displayed.
Restore Point: Windows Explorer Hang/Not Responding
Aug 30, 2009when I right Clicked a short cut, file or folder within Windows Explorer. It caused Windows Explorer to Hang/Not responding. Then Idecided to do an update to the Vista, so I ran the Upda5te option. My problem of right clicking appeared again? I went back into Safe Mode to find and re-do the System Restor from Sept 24th and it no longer exist? the select older than 5 days was grayed out.
I did not delete or do anything (that I'm aware of) to remove it. It was the last one on the list. Was it deleted automatically due to storage size allowed? In any case, is there a way to get it back? I need to fix this problem - of right clicking something and having Windows Explorer hang/not repond. Do I have to do a Vista Repair from my DVDs to get rid of the problem?
Set Restore Point On Vista X64 Home Premium, 0X81000101 Revisited
Jun 23, 2009Getting the time out error 0X81000101 when I try to set a restore point on Vista X64 Home Premium. This happened right after trying to install a Creative external 24bit Live sound blaster driver updates. I have read many threads and have done the following to no avail:
Turned off AVG free 8.5 Resident Shield. Ran disk clean up and rebooted. Turned off System Restore as Administrator, rebooted, turned on System Restore for C: drive only. Made sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic and Started. I have read a few regedit posts but am reluctant to try that yet since I can't make a copy of my registry right now with the failed System Restore. When I do try to create a System Restore point, it hangs forever. Task manager says it is not responding.

For some reason the restore points are not listing. When I use Vista restore program I think it's a big bug that Windows need to fix in vista.

This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function. In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update. I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

May 5, 2009The hard drive was of SATA type. I attempted to use VHD file to migrate the system from the old hdd to the new hdd but failed. The following was the steps taken:
1. Created a VHD file on the laptop machine and stored it on an USB interfaced external hdd.
2. Temporarily installed the new SATA hdd on a desktop machine and created partitions including data partitions.
3. Moved the VHD file to one of the data partitions on the new hdd.
4. Replaced the old hdd on the laptop machine with the new hdd.
5. On the laptop machine, the first primary partition of the new hdd was set active since the Vista system was installed on the first partition of the old hdd.
6. Started the laptop machine, let the system boot from the installer DVD and selected "Repair".
7. "PC Complete Restore" was selected. The installer located the VHD file and the restore process began.
Then the following message was displayed:
The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.
Error details: The parameter is incorrect.(0x80070057)

Mar 23, 2008Can anyone get the restore feature working, 95% of the time on trying it out, it fails to restore, and it only seems to keep a few days chekpoint, why doesn;t it work like XP or am I missing soemthing?

Jun 29, 2008Noticed that this happened after a failed System Restore. I remember System Restore saying something about the HDD not being restored because it was not plugged in. I continued with the restore but it failed. I tried 3 times and the restore failed every time. Finally a restore in Safe Mode Worked. Now, when I plug in My Book Western Digital 500GB External HDD, Vista says that a driver could not be found. Even manually pointing to the System32 folder didn't work. I went to the WD website and no driver...just diagnostics and a control GUI or something. Since Vista can 'SEE' the HDD but can't 'OPEN THE DOOR', is there an alternate solution? I even ReInstalled the OS thinking that would somehow fix the problem. (I also had SP1). I need to be able to access this drive to recover Picture of my New Born baby Girl.

Dec 29, 2008My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

This attempt failed, I went into SAFE mode and tried again and I get a message "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log. (0x81000202). I go to the Event Viewer and it fails "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." When I go to the "Services" I don't see any entry for the "Event Log" - what should I be looking for? How do I get the system restore working?

Suddenly from 5 days I am facing 'Display driver nvlddmkm failed and restore successfully'. Don't know when and why this happens.So I thought of restoring my system to 5 days back.I selected System restore back up point to 23rd of September,09.During this process something got messed up and when restarted it is showing 'blue screen' . Nothing else is visible.I'm able to login through safe mode.but don't know what to do with this. I also tried to do system repair. But no use.Ended up with same.
Tried to do system restore again. Even if I want to reinstall Vista, manufacturer has not provided any backup cd with my laptop.
All Folders Set To Read-Only, Cannot Undo.
Jul 29, 2009Today I have noticed that all of the folders on my computer are set to read-only, according to the properties menu, the Read Only box is blue. I looked through a similar topic on this message board, and the solutions were not effective in solving this problem.
In addition, this not only has affected every folder on my computer (including Documents), but it affects new folders as well. When I create a new, empty folder, with no files in it whatsoever, it is still marked as Read Only with a blue box.
Undo XP Dual Boot?
Mar 26, 2008I have a dual boot setup that has Vista on one sata hard drive and Windows XP on another sata hard drive. If I remember correctly, I installed XP 1st and than Vista. I now want to keep the current system running with XP and remove the Vista hard drive and install it in a new computer I am building. I'm guessing I will have bootup issues on boot on both pc's once I remove the Vista hard drive.

Mar 23, 2008I read in the BitLocker ReadMe that a TPM was recommended, but not required. So I ran the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool and let it add a new boot partition. So now I have an extra volume, S:. I then saw a message that a TPM is required. Upon further reading, I discovered that the requirement can be turned off, but the alternative is to use a USB flash drive as a key.
The inconvenience of this solution is not worth it for me, so I will use Ecrypting File System (EFS) instead. Had I known this in the first place, I would not have ran the Bitlocker Drive Preparation Tool. System Restore changed the drive letter of the volume, but nothing else changed. How can I undo what Bitlocker Drive Preparation Tool did? I know that in general, I need to move boot files and change the active partition, but I am afraid of making my systen non-bootable.
