System Restore Point Not Automatically

Mar 20, 2009

In the "task scheduler" the default setting is for "12:00am each day" and the second "trigger" is "upon comuter startup".These are in place and marked as "enabled" yet a "system restore point"is not automatically being created. The event log reads as follows:

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational
Source: Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler
Date: 3/19/2009 5:39:56 AM
Event ID: 114
Task Category: Missed task started.....

Task Scheduler could not launch task "MicrosoftWindowsSystemRestoreSR" as scheduled. Instance "{a1868f64-ed08-49a9-9f86-f62ed855affd}" is started now as required by the configuration option to start the task when available

System Restore Not Working: Unable To Make A Restore Point

Apr 11, 2008

I have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

System Restore Point Being Created At Every Bootup

Feb 12, 2009

I am running Vista Home Premium x64. Everytime I bootup, the Language Pack removal service runs (as it is supposed to, apparently).

However, Vista seems to treat this as a significant system event, which triggers a restore point to be created. The restore point creation is slowing down access to my hard disk everytime I reboot.

When I look at the list of restore points that Vista has created, a restore point is created at every bootup due to the event “Uninstall: Language Pack Removal”. I can see the list by running “System Restore”, then selecting “choose another restore point” and clicking Next.

Any idea how to stop the restore point being created at every bootup? I assume there’s a good reason Vista runs the Language Pack removal service at every bootup, so I’d rather keep that running.

I also want a restore point created when there is a software install/uninstall, so want to keep the system restore service running, too.

Restoring XP Restore Point From ?

Jul 4, 2008

I hope this is the correct group. I've been running XP Pro for quie some time and recently installed Vista using Partition Magic and have also installed Vista BootPro. I planned a full migration of all of my data from XP today but cannot boot into XP for some reason. I was going to export or save vital data from XP, so this is quite a bummer. I cannot enter Safe Mode nor use Last Known Good Config options for XP. My box makes it up to the "Starting Windows" screen and hangs there. After exporting the data I require from XP and saving to disk I was going to manually install all of my progs into Vista (Quite a plan for the 4th, huh?)Is there a method to utilize an XP Restore Point from Vista to enable me to boot into XP?

Unable To Create Restore Point

Jul 31, 2009

Vista 64bit has been running really well on my desktop after a clean install in March. Suddenly, Windows update is failing to install, because it can't create a systen restore point. When I try to create one in System Restore, manually, it fails also, citing the shadow file timeout, or some such.....I am worried, because I can't use backup, either! Anyone know what's going on?

Restore Point Automatic Does Not Work

May 16, 2008

I have task scheduler set up to create a restore point once a day. The history panel shows that the restore point is created on schedule, yet it does not show up in the system restore panel under system properties/system protection. Nor does the free space on the hard drive shrink by a gig or so, as I'd expect. All the settings in task scheduler seem to be correct, and I can create restore points manually. It's just that the automatic feature does not work. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? I'm using Vista Home Premium. Oodles of space allocated for restore points.

Restore Point: Windows Explorer Hang/Not Responding

Aug 30, 2009

when I right Clicked a short cut, file or folder within Windows Explorer. It caused Windows Explorer to Hang/Not responding. Then Idecided to do an update to the Vista, so I ran the Upda5te option. My problem of right clicking appeared again? I went back into Safe Mode to find and re-do the System Restor from Sept 24th and it no longer exist? the select older than 5 days was grayed out.

I did not delete or do anything (that I'm aware of) to remove it. It was the last one on the list. Was it deleted automatically due to storage size allowed? In any case, is there a way to get it back? I need to fix this problem - of right clicking something and having Windows Explorer hang/not repond. Do I have to do a Vista Repair from my DVDs to get rid of the problem?

Set Restore Point On Vista X64 Home Premium, 0X81000101 Revisited

Jun 23, 2009

Getting the time out error 0X81000101 when I try to set a restore point on Vista X64 Home Premium. This happened right after trying to install a Creative external 24bit Live sound blaster driver updates. I have read many threads and have done the following to no avail:

Turned off AVG free 8.5 Resident Shield. Ran disk clean up and rebooted. Turned off System Restore as Administrator, rebooted, turned on System Restore for C: drive only. Made sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic and Started. I have read a few regedit posts but am reluctant to try that yet since I can't make a copy of my registry right now with the failed System Restore. When I do try to create a System Restore point, it hangs forever. Task manager says it is not responding.

Can Mess Your System Up Good And Proper, Point,

Sep 8, 2009

Anyone know of a good free Cloning program that is 64bit compatible? for Vista ultimate being upgraded to win7 for the specific purpose of making an exact restore-able image of the HD. That can be copied to a reformatted harddrive after a major colaps of the os or virus damage? I also want to be-able to do a periodic erasure of said hd for security and privacy purposes. which I would do before formatting the HD again. I like to download a try a lot of free stuff and as you know it can mess your system up good and proper, to the point, its better to start over from a cloned image of factory settings that are up to date .

Use System Restore To Restore Back To Certain Restore Points?

May 26, 2008

Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

System Shutsdown And Reboots Automatically

Nov 22, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium x32 with SP2 installed running on an Intel motherboard Core2 Quad with 3GB memory and a nvida 8800GT video board and a 400 Watt p/s, 500GB drive with plenty of free space. My system fan speeds up to full speed and then re-boots. The only warning I get is the fan noise. This happens 5 or 6 times then it won't happen again for a couple days. It seems to happen exactly 1 hour from the last time it rebooted.... no kidding, within a couple seconds of 60 minutes.

Anyway, I thought I would check the event logs for a clue. I noticed that the Shutdown Event Tracker was not available so I looked for a way to turn it on. Vista, at least my version, does not have the gpedit.msc (Group policy console editor?) and other articles indicated that is what I needed to activate the Tracker.

The only thing I can find in the other logs is a recurring entry: "The DgiVecp service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the device specified." how to enable the Shutdown Event Tracker?

Connect To Internet Automatically Whenever System Starts Up?

The equivalent menu in XP included the option to Create Shortcut. how to launch a connection at startup in Vista? System Restore Shadow Copies: System Error

Apr 25, 2008

I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:

1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....

The output above shows space used on the C: drive by System Restore is 237.419 MB. The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. The capability to restore to a previous point in time or having the new Shadow Copy feature available can be a time saver if something goes wrong or if you delete a file. source: John Barnett Windows Vista Support I keep getting an error message. I seem to remember doing this before with my XP but can't remember how. Is there an easier way?
