Can anyone get the restore feature working, 95% of the time on trying it out, it fails to restore, and it only seems to keep a few days chekpoint, why doesn;t it work like XP or am I missing soemthing?
View 4 RepliesMy system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function. In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update. I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe hard drive was of SATA type. I attempted to use VHD file to migrate the system from the old hdd to the new hdd but failed. The following was the steps taken:
1. Created a VHD file on the laptop machine and stored it on an USB interfaced external hdd.
2. Temporarily installed the new SATA hdd on a desktop machine and created partitions including data partitions.
3. Moved the VHD file to one of the data partitions on the new hdd.
4. Replaced the old hdd on the laptop machine with the new hdd.
5. On the laptop machine, the first primary partition of the new hdd was set active since the Vista system was installed on the first partition of the old hdd.
6. Started the laptop machine, let the system boot from the installer DVD and selected "Repair".
7. "PC Complete Restore" was selected. The installer located the VHD file and the restore process began.
Then the following message was displayed:
The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.
Error details: The parameter is incorrect.(0x80070057)
When I try to undo a restore point, a get an error message that the operation has failed because of an unknown error. Then none of my other restore points will work, either.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNoticed that this happened after a failed System Restore. I remember System Restore saying something about the HDD not being restored because it was not plugged in. I continued with the restore but it failed. I tried 3 times and the restore failed every time. Finally a restore in Safe Mode Worked. Now, when I plug in My Book Western Digital 500GB External HDD, Vista says that a driver could not be found. Even manually pointing to the System32 folder didn't work. I went to the WD website and no driver...just diagnostics and a control GUI or something. Since Vista can 'SEE' the HDD but can't 'OPEN THE DOOR', is there an alternate solution? I even ReInstalled the OS thinking that would somehow fix the problem. (I also had SP1). I need to be able to access this drive to recover Picture of my New Born baby Girl.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

I havent added anything new apart from software - BBC iPlayer. Plsu, a lexmark printer driver for an X1100 has never worked - it is not vista approved but the printer has worked. I tried restoring to an older version using my original install CD but it fails. Observation: The PC does startup now but when I click on my account login - I get a blank screen and explorer doesnt display - there is no desktop. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del - I can see the usual choices...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of rebuilding my wife's Sony Viao after Sony reimaged the HD (Vista Home Premium) and got to the point where I wanted to create a restore point. This attempt failed, I went into SAFE mode and tried again and I get a message "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log. (0x81000202). I go to the Event Viewer and it fails "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." When I go to the "Services" I don't see any entry for the "Event Log" - what should I be looking for? How do I get the system restore working?

Suddenly from 5 days I am facing 'Display driver nvlddmkm failed and restore successfully'. Don't know when and why this happens.So I thought of restoring my system to 5 days back.I selected System restore back up point to 23rd of September,09.During this process something got messed up and when restarted it is showing 'blue screen' . Nothing else is visible.I'm able to login through safe mode.but don't know what to do with this. I also tried to do system repair. But no use.Ended up with same.
Tried to do system restore again. Even if I want to reinstall Vista, manufacturer has not provided any backup cd with my laptop.
Ive always use vista home premium, but after I used glary tools to defrag my regestry and then it said restart my comp annd i did, then whe i go to my pc, i see it has windows basic features, like on aero. So i went to personalinize and I SEE NO AERO feature!

When I create an image, my programs create the image, and I can save it with no problem. When I create an animation, the programs need to save the file after it creates each frame. Vista is blocking those programs from doing
this, and I need to have them allowed to create and save these files constantly. I like the security that Vista has, but is there any way to allow just certain programs to do this while keeping that security feature on for everything else?
While reading in Vista's help center it highlights text, it's annoying. Is this a function of "Ease of Access" or something else? How do I turn it off? Using 64bit Win Premium on an HP Pavilion laptop.

The favorite feature about Vista on my opinion is the Aero that it has. It creates a more visual look on the window and makes the graphics look better.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter booting up my laptop and reaching the desktop, the right click feature will stop immediately after starting up completely, and clicking on anything is a problem on it's own. The only way I have found to work around it is to Ctrl + Alt + Del and Switch User, then go to the power options and restart, as the conventional way of shutting down does not work. I contacted my laptops manufacturer (ASUS) and they suggested that it could be a touchpad driver problem. So they emailed me the latest driver and I downloaded it. To my surprise, it actually worked..... for about 5 minutes. The right clicking problem still persisted. So I looked into other forums and they suggested a problem with some Context Menu Handlers. I downloaded the suggested program 'ShellExView' and followed the instructions down to the letter on how to use it. Currently, as I'm typing this post, I have had to copy and paste patches of text because when the right click feature stops, the keyboard disengages, and the only workaround is the power button.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got a pretty insignificant, but weird bug: the highly hyped, hardly useful 3d flip feature of Vista has just magically disapeared from my comp. Only thing I know I've done was installing the latest x64 security update (KB958644) just before this. The icon is still there, but it just brings up the old school blue box version, and winKey-tab no longer does anything. Anybody heard of an update removing this feature, or know where the mysterious 'flip' files are actually located?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI think as far back as win95 if you used windows explorer with status bar enabled (for vista this is called details plane) if you select a folder (in the navigation plane) in the status bar it would list the total number of items AND the total file size for all the files in the selected folder. Vista seems to have lost this feature and only the total amount of items are listed.
I'm a programmer so this feature has proved useful for me in certian cases. the workaround is to select all files but still why remove it from the unselected view? I can also detail out 4 other annoyances with the new explorer if MS would like more details shoot me an email.
1. Decending Sort in list mode kicks all the folders to the end of the file listing unlike previous versions of windows where the folders were sorted but stayed at the begining of the listing (should make this an option for what method the user would like to use).................
Is there some new feature in windows vista which allocates hard drive space? I installed vista and windows updates (19Gb just for drivers, updates, and vista ultimate). Here is all that I have installed, now look at how much space is gone. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.
View 5 Replies View Relatedafter weeks of fighting, troubleshooting, debugging, deleting, reloading, uninstalling, installing etc etc etc. I have finally come to the conclusion, that being able to print, is simply no longer a feature with windows operating system. Unless someone can tell me a fix that no one has discovered yet. I refuse to believe that the fix to our printing problems, is throw out the PC and get a new one. If thats the case i'm sure that there will be many people like myself who make the leap to MAC!

This fails, giving a meaningless Windows message stating that the installer has stopped working. I can't get the Manage Attachments feature to work so I can't upload images of the error messages. I have an administrator account.
Following instruction, I downloaded AIR directly from the Adobe site and found that it still wouldn't install on my account. It asks me twice if I want to run the installation exe file but from two different locations which is weird.
